- After receiving a distress call from Beverly Crusher, Jean-Luc Picard enlists help from generations old and new for one last adventure: a mission that will change Starfleet and his old crew forever.
- In the 25th century, Dr. Beverly Crusher (Gates McFadden) and her son Jack (Ed Speleers) are attacked aboard the SS Eleos. Jack was studying all of Picard's previous encounters with the Borg, on board the Enterprise. Beverly manages to fight off the intruders, but comments that they have been found. Beverly is injured and sends an emergency message to her former Starfleet captain, the retired Admiral Jean-Luc Picard (Patrick Stewart). Her message consists of a single word "Hellbird" and a set of coordinates.
Picard and his current love interest, Laris (Orla Brady), are planning a trip to Chaltok IV when he receives the message and she encourages him to go. She says Beverly seems genuinely afraid and out of options. Geordi (LeVar Burton) is running the fleet museum.
Beverly told Picard not to involve Starfleet so he goes to his former first officer, Captain William Riker (Jonathan Frakes). Picard explains the message from Beverly. The location of the coordinates is noted as empty as per navigational charts. Riker says Hellbird was the computer virus used by the Borg on the Enterprise when Picard was assimilated by the Borg. The virus added 3 to every digit in the computer. Riker does the same with Beverly's coordinates and find the Ryton system. It is outside Federation space Unknown to them, their meeting is observed.
Riker and Picard stage a surprise inspection of the USS Titan-A, the successor to Riker's former ship, planning to convince its captain, Liam Shaw (Todd Stashwick), to go to Beverly's location without revealing why. The Titian-A is at a star base, undergoing refit to become a Neo-constitution class spaceship. The fleet is preparing to disburse for Frontier Day exercises. Geordi's daughter Sidney (Ashlei Sharpe Chestnut) is serving on board the Titan-A. Liam Shaw is very dismissive of both Picard and Riker. He criticizes Riker's style of captaining the Titan-A right to his face. Shaw declines their request. He says Picard is retired and Riker is a Captain without an active ship. His orders came from acting superiors in Starfleet and he intends to carry them out. Shaw's first officer is Picard's friend Seven of Nine (Jeri Ryan). Seven demands the truth from Picard and when Picard narrates the whole story, she ignores Shaw's orders and changes the Titan's course.
Titan reaches the Ryton system and Seven allows Picard and Riker to leave on an unguarded shuttle.
On M'Talas Prime, Starfleet intelligence officer Raffi Musiker (Michelle Hurd) searches for a stolen portal device that her mysterious handler fears will be used in a terrorist attack; The portal device was an experimental quantum tunneling technology, stolen from the Daystrom institute. Raffi finds out that an entity called the Red Lady is somehow connected to the device, but is not sure in what capacity. Raffi finds that the Red Lady refers to a red-colored statue of Rachel Garrett, as part of the Frontier Day celebrations. Raffi tries to contact at Starfleet at District 7, where the statue is located, but receives no answer. Raffi fails to find the device before it is used to destroy a Starfleet facility.
Picard and Riker board the Eleos via shuttle-craft and find Beverly in stasis. They meet Jack as a large ship appears. The ship disables their warp drive. Jack says they are being hunted. The new ship is unlike anything anyone has ever seen.
