- When a familiar face from Helen's past returns to Darrowby, James worries that he has to vie for her attention and steps up to compete against them at Mrs Pumphrey's annual cricket match. The rest of Skeldale House are apprehensive as the game can be brutal. Siegfried tries his best to train James and get a reluctant Tristan to step in, but it's not looking good for their Darrowby Eleven team.
- James goes ring a bull on Helen's gentry ex Hugh Hulton's estate, unaware he's about to offer it as a gift 'for the inconvenience with the breeder', on top of renewing their farm lease, with a clause in favor of the daughters to succeed Richard Alderson. Tristan is still sulking, even refusing 'being vet nor farmer' to play for Darrowby's the agricultural team in the annual cricket match against Hugh's team. Host Mrs. Pumphrey asked for Siegfried, not uncle James, to deal with Tricki Woo's mounting sexual appetite, agreed to castration before the match after he slipped away to a girl dog nearby, but changes her mind on cricket day. James foolishly agreed to stand in for Tristan, but couldn't learn it properly short notice, and on the day a farm emergency requires another interim, so Tristan plays too. James is up in the final against Hugh.—KGF Vissers
- Hugh has arrived back to Yorkshire from France, the first time since Helen left him at the altar. Hugh asking specifically for James to ring one of his new bull cows, and he wanting to speak to the Aldersons about the long term lease on their farm may have some underlying motives connected to what happened with him and Helen and that perhaps he knows about James and Helen dating. It may all come to a head at what Siegfried, Tristan and Mrs. Hall deem the most important annual cricket match hosted by Mrs. Pumphrey and held on her estate: between the Darrowby 11, a team comprised of farmers and vets, and Halton's Select, a team organized and captained by Hugh. It may have an added sense of competition between Hugh and James as novice cricketer James agrees to play for the Darrowby 11. One of the reasons for the need to add James is that one of Darrowby 11's usual ringers, Tristan, still angry at Siegfried, refuses to play in he not considering himself a vet, while what Tristan truly wants is an apology from his brother and admission that what Siegfried did about lying to him about his exam results was wrong. Another issue at the Pumphrey estate is that Tricki Woo is maturing into doggie puberty, something that Mrs. Pumphrey is hesitant to admit and is against using surgical means to curb Tricki's new amorous nature.—Huggo
