Should Have Humor to Be a Good B-Movie
claudio_carvalho15 December 2013
Craig Carlson (Alexander Nifong), his girlfriend Tracy Bernstein (Stella Maeve) and their friend Derek Johnson (J. Mallory-McCree) row to the Brewster Island in a canoe to spend the weekend camping on the island. Tracy is not used to go camping and needs to defecate and she does not absorb the idea of going to the woods with a shovel to bury the poop. She sees a house nearby and she decides to ask to the owners to use the toilet. However there is nobody home and she finds the key of the front door and uses the toilet. During the night, there is a storm and the trio decides to spend the night in the house. However, early in the morning, the owners of the house return and they hide in the basement, where they find two corpses inside a plastic bag. However they are caught and forced to dig a hole to bury the bodies. Out of the blue, they are saved by three naked persons that are exactly like themselves. Soon they learn that they have been cloned and their duplicates are made of their dark side but more strong and intelligent.

"CLONED: The Recreator Chronicles" could have been a good B-movie with an interesting story. However, there is a total lack of humor, despite the absurd situation that all the characters are cloned from their poops associated to an invention from a scientist of atom bomb and lightning from the storm. Anyway this movie is watchable and entertains. My vote is four.

Interesting story, but an anti-climatic movie...
paul_haakonsen26 August 2012
Warning: Spoilers
When I watched "Recreator" it was without having heard anything about it prior to watching it. No impressions, no taints, no spoilers. The cover to the movie looked interesting, so it caught my attention.

The story is about three friends, Tracy (played by Stella Maeve), Craig (played by Alexander Nifong) and Derek (played by J. Mallory-McCree), who goes camping on an island, when they run into a very mysterious couple that owns a cabin on the island. The island once was the home to a scientist who dabbled in cloning, and things on the island take a turn for the worse.

I will say that the story in itself was interesting, although there were some major plot holes here and there. For example, how did the three friends get cloned? And how come the cloning process is that fast?

As for the acting, well I think they had some good enough names to the cast list, and the three leading actors were actually doing alright jobs. Most memorable in the movie was Alexander Nifong, in my opinion.

The movie was nicely shot though, lots of good camera work. And the dialogue was fair. The movie moved ahead at a good, steady pace, and there weren't really any overly dull moments. However, for a thriller, the movie was sort of anti-climatic, as it didn't really build up much suspense, much less peak in thrilling manners.

"Recreator" is good entertainment, although the ending was quite predictable once you are let in on what is really going on. "Recreator" is well worth a watch if you like movies that aren't overly realistic.

Slightly Entertaining

This is one of those movies you watch because you have seen everything else. However, there is some entertainment value to this movie. The bad lines that makes you chuckle, poor acting, and fight scenes that border on comical at times kept me watching. The movie did hold my attention. I kept hoping for an explanation of key events at some point, but it never came, and made the whole thing fall flat for me. I was trying to figure out the direction of the movie because it all seemed so muddled. By the end I felt like the whole point was like one of those Saturday morning cartoon specials, the silly ones that slap you in the face with some kind of moral message. Their was no explanation of main events, and the characters reacted in such unnatural ways, one might mistake them for the clones. I would not watch it again, but I've seen worse.

Just soooo ya know, awful!
krisdl22 August 2012
I actually caught myself staring at this movie with my jaw dropping in a complete daze. I wasn't looking for a master piece, but this isn't even TV movie material.

There was so much reaching and grasping to sell what happens that I hit a wall right there, and then the acting finally had to take a beating, I tried to let it slide but the story was so bad I couldn't help but focus on the terrible characters and lack of well, anything at all.

Don't waste your time with this movie, if one person doesn't watch it because of my review/slating then I did my job and it was worth posting.

What is Recreator meant to be?
poolandrews22 December 2012
Warning: Spoilers
Recreator is set on Brewster Island in New York State & starts as three teenage friends arrive by canoe, boyfriend & girlfriend Craig Carlson (Alexander Nifong) & Tracy Bernstein (Stella Maeve) along with Derek Johnson (J. Mallory-McCree) intend to spend the weekend camping on the island away from the stresses of the big city. Once they reach Brewster Island they see a huge house in the distance & decide to check it out, Tracy manages to find the key to the front door & lets herself in, the house seems deserted & the three take the opportunity to use the facilities. However they soon see the owners of the house returning, they try to hide in the basement but find two dead bodies down there when they do, they are then caught & made to dig holes on the beach to bury the bodies. Suddenly out of nowhere three naked people who look exactly like them save the trio, things turn weird when the Tracy, Craig & Derek come face to face with exact clones of themselves who have a sinister plan to leave the Island & take over their originals life...

Written, co-produced & directed by Gregory Orr this low budget film seems to have some sort of identity crisis, to my mind I just can't see what it's trying to be or trying to do. The script has aspects from various genres such as sci-fi with the cloning angle, there's some horror with the teen slasher feel that it descends into along with a thriller feel as the clones play their originals off each other & try to manipulate the situation & there's even some mystery here as the script tries to keep you guessing about everyone's motives & who is who. Unfortunately none of it works or gels together, the script is pretty slow & there's little in the way of explanation but what I could gather from it is that these kids were cloned from their bodily wastes after going to the toilet, that a lightening storm activated the cloning & that these clones are largely quite polite until they try to kill you. People being cloned from their poop does seem like it's come from a comedy but Recreator takes itself deadly seriously but it's rather pedestrian & I was never drawn into the story. Ideas & themes are introduced, like the original experiments from the late 50's to a soldiers possible homosexual tendencies (he actually kisses his own reflection in a mirror) but are quickly forgotten & never lead anywhere interesting. At 90 minutes long Recreator tries to be different but it's dull, silly & makes no great sense, why did the clones wait to kill their originals? Why did the original teens react so well to be confronted with exact clones of themselves? Most of us might have been totally freaked out but not these three, they invite them in & dress them!

Another aspect of Recreator I didn't like was just how uneventful it was, hardly anything of any note happens. All the cloning is off screen, there's no blood or gore apart from one brief shot of a guy with shovel stuck in his head & there's no action to speak of either. It's set entirely inside or around one house which helps keep the budget down but becomes repetitive for the audience. There's probably more CGI then you think, all the actor's play both themselves & their clones so whenever they are seen in the same scene it's CGI & the effects to that end are good. The character's look identical so it's often hard to tell which is the original & which is the clone which I assume was intentional but it's not used to any great effect, there's no real suspense or tension & the sci-fi aspects are never given more than the occasional few lines of dialogue.

Probably shot on a low budget Recreator looks alright for what it is & is well made but hardly anything happens. The acting is decent enough from a small cast.

Recreator is a sci-fi horror thriller than disappoints in all areas, it just can't make it's mind up what it wants to be & ends up being an uneven mess. I saw this on telly over here in the UK so I didn't spend money seeing it but I know I would have been even more annoyed if I had. There are much better films out there.

One Of The Better Clone-themed Movies
StuOz29 November 2021
Oddball little island has clone making going on.

I have a soft spot for independent films and am generally less critical of them than many. I welcome the slowness of this movie instead of the fast edits we would get if this were a mainstream flick. This movie is basically the story of three young adults and they have doubles - so it is the story of six characters!

There is a very unexpected thing going on with the black guy and his double, perhaps there was a reason for this in the script and I just missed it? Not saying I have a problem with it, I just did not expect it.

Not sure if I am the target audience age for this movie as I am not young, but it made me feel young just watching it. Maybe that is part of the film's big appeal to me? Whatever, you could do a lot worse than CLONED.

Christian Propaganda Horror
JM-234 September 2012
Warning: Spoilers
The plot of this film is standard 'teenagers meet something nasty in the woods' but the ideas behind it are heavily influenced by right wing Christianity.

The scientist behind the horror is not just an evil geneticist he also worked on the atom bomb; fully grown clones develop overnight but because they are not born as God intended they are automatically evil. One evil clone attempts to raise the consciousness of his black doppelgänger; the most violent death scene comes when a characters refuses to face up to his own homosexuality and the independent self-directed girlfriend is rejected in favour of the one who surrenders herself to the male lead. At one point a character actually says that 'the meek shall inherit the Earth' but conformity rather than positive goodness triumphs. The meek and mild male lead has a haircut like Jesus too.

Dull teen clone story
Leofwine_draca2 May 2015
RECREATOR has potential but turns into a general mish-mash of ideas with way too much of the "teenagers running in the woods" type scenes to recommend it. It's a dimly lit adventure in which a trio of teenagers visit a remote island and take shelter in a mysterious installation when a storm beckons. Pretty soon they find themselves at the mercy of their own clones, which are set to destroy them.

Cloning has always been an intriguing idea in cinema but the idea here is workable at best. Indeed so little is made of the originality of the premise that any random monster or human villain could have been the antagonist. Too much of it feels like a teen horror flick while the thought-provoking sci-fi angle of the story is swept aside.

It doesn't help that the production values have led to a dim and gloomy looking movie with non-existent special effects. The thinly-written characters are rather trying and despite the best efforts of the actors involved none of them are remotely likable, so you end up having no interest in what happens come the end. It's a pity.

What a Mess
joeywyss7 January 2014
With plot holes big enough to drive a locomotive through , paper thin characters and a surprise ending you could see coming from the Space Station, this is a movie that wasted the acting talent and a relatively good idea. Nifong is the only one who delivers his twins with any identifiable difference or conviction, and what a waste of John De Lancie. This feels like a rough draft that got made instead of giving the script another thorough run thru. The best thing about the movie is the DVD menu screen. The sad part is that the young cast have enough experience to have pulled off a relatively solid script, and the movie had a great location, but something is just amiss here.

Not as bad as the Vote would have you believe
torzta17 November 2012
I really didn't expect the film to be that good based off the score, but thought I would give it a go. It turns out to be a fairly slow paced light thriller. There is little action so its not for the Horror fans out there. More intellectual sorta movie

I actually enjoyed the story line and thought the pacing was very good. There are a few pot holes (I still don't get how the situation arose), but the acting was OK, and I actually cared about 1 of the characters (female lead), which is better than most movies are able to get me to.

Worth a shot if you have nothing else to do. Good time filler if you have nothing else to do. I have certainly seen higher ranked movies that weren't as enjoyable as this.

Bad editing or what?
GotNoTimeToBleed21 July 2013
Warning: Spoilers
I'm not giving away the complete ending, but Derek clearing wasn't the clone at the end. That was totally made clear in the house and woods after. So then why did he have the bandages on his arm? Obviously, either a case of bad editing or they changed the ending and missed that. If he was really supposed to be the clone, then they screwed up even more because it's anything but obvious, especially at the end at the hardware store. Totally not the clone character, therefore the clone is dead and the bandages are a bad mistake.

And what the hell was up with the stuffed beaver with glasses? How many of those things are these on and near Baxter Island? There's a shot of one in the house along with deer. And then there's one in the hardware store by the door. Why? Is that some inside joke that we aren't supposed to pay attention to?

The movie wasn't very good. It wasn't scary or even creepy really. It was actually kind of boring and the issue with the bandages just made things worse for me at the end.

Excellent comedy thriller, decent 3d overall was very entertaining!!!
joiningjt22 January 2021
It isnt the exorcist or the conjuring more on the lines of a low budget invasion of the body snatchers. The acting was excellent the cinematography worked well we purchased the 3d bluray and it was decent 3d no in your face 3d but depth 3d throughout. The story was excellent as well kept me watching till the excellent ending!! Not really a horror for me was more of a thriller with a dash of comedy. Not sure why a low ass 4 rating I've seen much worse it's easily a 7 all day long!! Watch it you'll enjoy it especially after the story gets set it has some real funny scenes.

I have seen worse
LOL101LOL23 August 2012
I was not getting my hopes up on this film, as I think this kind of film has been done before, and it is nothing really new, but in some ways it is. But I thought it was entertaining enough for me to give it a positive spin, don't view this for blood and guts, titties, as it is not a horror film, and sorry no nudity scenes.

If you watch this with a light hearted approach then it is not bad entertainment, it flows just fine, no real slow boring moment, but no flash bang pace either.

The acting is OK, and a solid enough story line, but no Oscar winning performance either, give it a go, you can watch a hell of a lot worse.

7 out of 10 for me

Just not interesting
takato052421 February 2021
I knew from the beginning as soon as I saw 3 idiot kids on a canoe that I wasn't going to like this movie. And I was right. Unfortunately I won't let myself quit a movie until I've watched it all the way through. And the disappointment did not disappoint. Nothing these kids do or say is even close to how someone would react. The pacing is slow, and the music doesn't help. I've seen high school plays with better acting talent than this. And all the sex wasn't called for either, nor was the jealous black guy that added nothing to the story. All thumbs down.

The Real Replicants Steal the Show
jack-wwwebb30 August 2011
Warning: Spoilers
Kean Riley & Kasey Riley are from the region in which this thriller was shot -- and are iconic in local lore - word is that one has a birth certificate filed in Franklin County - Malone NY - dated Feb 28th,1962, and his "twin" has a certificate dated Feb 29th,1962 (There was no 29th in 1962.) They did an awesome job in this flick, and obvious is the influence of Stella Adler, Stanislavsky, and Howard Riley (always available as an "Acting (blank)" when some local politico or other messes up, quits, or is sent "Down the River.") They should be available to accept a single statuette next year for "Best Supporting Actor" - but only if that gig doesn't coincide with the 2012 Winter Carnival in Saranac Lake, NY.

slow
rndhyd1 February 2020
Many movies can be boiled down to less than 2/3 of their length.

The standard length is 90+ minutes

This is less & could've been 20-30 minutes, which would've been fine.

Don't waste your time on this.

Original plot idea worth seeing if you're bored, made the time go by without any glitches
Thrill_KillZ24 August 2012
I expected a crappy barely passable thriller and it didn't turn out to be bad at all. The plot is really kind of laughable when you actually think about it. To think of dropping a deuce and having a copy of yourself climb out the septic tank and try & kill you is kind of funny. In the end they did manage to explain away the why's & what's. The scenic lake house served as a good backdrop, the production value was solid. The acting could have been better but in films like this you always get fresh faces & some wooden lines but I didn't roll my eyes at anything I could think of. The story as you probably already know is three friends go camping and it rains so they end up taking shelter inside this huge lake house that appeared to be empty at the time until they meet the second generation owner's & from that point everything goes down hill for the three of them as they end up being stuck in a cat and mouse game with their replicas. I think it was a 6/10 but to be more accurate more of a 5.5. Still it's not a horrible film. It all depends on if you are into wacky stuff like this, if you are not then I'd advise skipping it. If you are and are thinking about PPV'ing it I don't want to advise you to dive right into something you may not like, if there isn't anything in your favorite genre available & you like what I described then go for it. It will do fine to burn up 90 minutes. When you read reviews always click on their user name for credibility if it's their first one then most likely it's either a personal attack[(1/10)] or they are connected to the movie[(10/10)]

What a gem! 🙌
DebGC6 July 2021
Warning: Spoilers
I stumbled across this movie on Prime a few months ago and decided to give it a go. Last night I decided to watch it again because I was distracted the first rime and felt it needed to be re-watched. There were so many little details I missed the first time! The best part is the the twist at the end. Haha. Dang! This movie is definitely a gem! I loved all of the acting and their portrayal of each of the characters! Throughout the movie, there are moments when each of the characters have a moment with their clones.. It's in that moment and the looks on their faces that made me go WHOA. Yes! 🙌 Overall? I would watch it again, and I absolutely recommend it. It's not overtly scary, but it's one of those movies that makes you go... Well dang y'all! That happened! 😁

Not too shabby.
gokeymichael16 February 2014
To be honest with all of you, this movie impressed me. My expectations were low based on some reviews elsewhere. I usually ignore reviews so that I might make my own judgment. I'm glad I continued that trend because I would have skipped this had I followed the majority of reviews I read. The only thing that really bugged me was the reactions of the three mains. They seemed oddly comfortable with what was happening. I guess if you have actors with zero emotional range you can't have them get too emotional. Otherwise, I enjoyed it. The ending was pretty nice too. Kind of an FU at the end. Nicely done overall. John de Lancie is the name in this flick but don't look forward to too much screen time from the veteran. His role is a quick flash of about five minutes total. This story centers more on the three friends and their experiences on the island.

Decent movie
Psy-Ko16 March 2013
When compared to the big budget Hollywood stuff indies just can't compete, they don't have the budget or the names. But it all depends what you're looking for. For me this was a fun movie. Compared to other indies I think the movie is very well done. The actors were good, maybe not award winning but good enough that it was easy to watch. God I've seen some horrible acting in indies and compared to those these guys were Oscar winners! The story was original and so what if things were unbelievable, that's why it's called fiction right? The main thing I will say is it was an enjoyable movie, kept me interested to the end and got me involved in both the story and characters. I think that's pretty good! I give it a 7/10 easily.

Popcorn Flick!
krisnyu-671-30343618 May 2011
This movie is so much fun! I didn't know quite what to expect going into the theater, but I really enjoyed myself. Recreator played on all my fears of the woods and camping...irrational fears, you may say, perhaps not!!

I loved the setting...it all takes place on an isolated and wooded island (filmed in upstate NY). So creepy...and yet the house on this island is AMAZING! It's a gorgeous cabin, but more like a cabin mansion...the kind of place you think of when you hear the words "dream vacation home." I'd love to spend a weekend there relaxing, swimming, reading...though maybe not after seeing what happens on that island in the film...ha. I don't want to say too much, because it will give away half the fun. But I can say...I'm glad I'm not a twin.

Buy a big tub of popcorn and go with a few friends!

Entertaining Movie
nburgos00223 April 2013
Warning: Spoilers
*regarding clones*

Cloned Craig: You're here, we're here. I have to rely on faith there's a reason.

Original Tracy: But aren't you even curious? I mean, it's not like this happens every day.

Cloned Craig: I should hope not. Otherwise, things would get pretty dicey down at the DMV.

Cloned: The Recreator Chronicles begins on an island with Frank Miller (John de Lancie, Star Trek: The Next Generation) and his wife Elizabeth (Laura Moss) fixing to call it a night in their beautiful woodland cabin. The raging, midnight thunderstorm in the Adirondack Mountains produces a lightning bolt which strikes the home's septic tank outside. This reignites an old experiment by a scientist who used to live there. We reach the opening titles and are introduced to Tracy (Stella Maeve, The Runaways, Accused at 17), Craig (Alexander Nifong, Pretty Little Liars, Glee), and Derek (J. Mallory McCree, We Need to Talk about Kevin) on their way to the island for a hiking and camping trip the next day. Tracy has to use the bathroom after the long canoe ride to the island and has issues with letting loose outside. Naturally, she finds Mr. and Mrs. Miller's house. What happened the previous night (clones of Mr. and Mrs. Miller killing their originals) is intercut with Tracy making her way inside the empty house.

Eventually, Tracy, Craig, and Derek all go to the house to use the bathroom, shower, and hang out, since the Millers seem to be gone. The Millers' clones return, the three teenagers flee, and a chase ensues in the woods. It's there where we learn of the teenagers' clones, which save them during all the madness.

Shot in the beautiful Adirondack Mountains, Cloned: The Recreator Chronicles is an independent film with spectacular production quality (you'd think they had Hollywood's vast resources). According to director Gregory Orr, the idea began with the concept of three kids going into the woods and six of them coming out. Where does one take it from there? Any number of directions; and a director of less experience and talent may have failed where Orr succeeded.

Where do Orr and his cast and crew succeed? In taking a well-written script and translating it to an interesting movie. It's as simple as that. Yes, the concept of cloning isn't exactly an original one, but it's used effectively here to drive home the movie's underlying theme of "replacement." Like most good sci-fi, it uses a scientific concept (one of which may be completely viable in the future) to assist in telling a story relevant to today's society. While we're not yet being replaced by clones of ourselves (or genetically altered, superior humans in general), you don't have to look far and wide to see people losing their jobs because of faster computers and automated systems. Cloned looks at this from more of a bio-tech perspective than a completely technological one, but its message isn't lost.

Stella Maeve, Alexander Nifong, and J. Mallory McCree make for a great ensemble. They also demonstrate good range. It is a pleasure to see John de Lancie again, as well, since I imagine a portion of this movie's fan base will remember him from his iconic role on the various incarnations of Star Trek.

Overall, I'd highly recommend the movie, not just for its concept and message, but more importantly because of its entertainment value.

Not Bad
luvkylie00313 May 2013
Warning: Spoilers
Pros:

  • Not boring -- holds your attention throughout - good acting - interesting plot, some insightful questions - great ending which leaves the possibility for more in the future - john de lancie - beautiful location (although at least one shot was green screened i noticed, a shot on the lake that was very obvious, but thats the only one that comes to mind) - septic tanks - overall pretty well written

Cons:

  • wish it was a little bit longer - killed off john de lancie too quick (never a good thing; were used to him being immortal) - a few bad jokes or lines or dialogue that made me cringe

Overall:

  • If you're a fan of the genre, add it to your collection or rent it.

Fun, Entertaining Movie w/ Interesting Subject Matter
normfan876 May 2013
Warning: Spoilers
Out of the movies I have rented recently this was one I didn't have high hopes for. The kids wanted it, I got it, we watched it, and I was really surprised at how entertaining it was. Its more of a scifi thriller than horror, I think, but it had little horror elements in there too. It definitely wasn't a boring movie and when anyone died, it was at least for a reason rather than the typical knock-one-off-at-a-time for no reason approach.

the movie actually brings up some interesting issues with cloning and science and brings the matter to the audience in a fun way.

The young actors in the movie did a fantastic job especially considering their roles as themselves and their counter parts. the raange is there and was a pleasure to see.

They top it off with a great little twist at the end, one some MIGHT have seen coming but was absolutely appreciated and leaves the door open for more (though the movie stands good on its own too). 8/10
