- Just five stars remained and one of them would have to go home to determine who would compete in next week's semifinals on "Dancing with the Stars."
Head judge Len Goodman explained why the judges decided to forego Mya & Dmitry's '70s samba, which scored a perfect 30, for the encore. He said the choice was Joanna & Derek's futuristic paso doble, which they again called genius.
A look at the leader board: Before getting to any results, there was a look back at the scores from Monday night...
Mya & Dmitry, 29 + 30 = 59
Joanna & Derek, 23 + 29 = 52
Kelly & Louis, 25 + 26 = 51
Aaron & Karina, 23 + 27 = 50
Donny & Kym, 26 + 24 = 50
To the results: The first couple to secure a place in the semifinals went to Joanna & Derek.
To the tape: A look back at Monday's performances and the backstage testimonials offered a few highlights. Derek said his quickstep with Joanna, which was ripped by Len, was the worst performance they'd given. Kelly simply hugged Louis and told him she loved him. Louis cried, too, as Kelly said that even if she went home she could leave knowing her foxtrot couldn't have been better. Mya said she felt like pigs were flying after getting high praise from Len.
Donny was happy to have entertained and scared the audience with his '80s-inspired paso doble. Derek and Joanna were relieved to have come back strong with their second dance of the night. Mya was glad to have proven that she really wants to win the competition.
Be our guest: Michael Buble performed his single "Haven't Met You Yet" from his new album, "Crazy Love." Michael returned later to perform the classic "Feeling Good."
Toward the end of the night, Susan Boyle took the stage to perform the song that made her an international sensation, "I Dreamed a Dream."
Back to the results: Tom Bergeron announced that Mya & Dmitry were safe for another week.
Dance Center: Kenny Mayne showed up saying he hadn't seen any of this season. Kenny and Jerry Rice made fun of her laugh, comparing it to a seal. Kenny went on the record, saying he doesn't like Derek.
Jerry said he hoped to have as much energy as Donny Osmond when he's 82. Aaron Carter's profile sheet included "Cry baby" in the notes, and Kenny asked Len, "What does Aaron do for a living?" Kenny chided Len about having made Aaron cry and Len defending Aaron, saying he's just an emotional guy. "It's a stupid TV show about dancing, what are you crying about it for?" He said Aaron had the "lowest pain threshold of any man I've ever seen in my life." Jerry said Aaron was "so fragile, like a snowflake resting on a lily."
Later, "Dance Center" returned later with Kenny calling out Kelly for seeming so cute -- "The British always get away with this because they have that cute accent from over there," he said -- "but she swears like a trucker."
Kenny was a little confused when he got to Mya & Dmitry, thinking Dmitry was the celebrity.
Design a Dance: The audience picked the dancer, picked the dance, picked the partner, picked the song and designed the costume and decided to reunite Sabrina Bryan with Mark Ballas to perform a paso doble to the song "Eye of the Tiger," while wearing tiger-print outfits.
Back to the results: With only three couples remaining, Tom said the next couple safe was Donny & Kym. That left Aaron & Karina and Kelly & Louis.
Finally, the couple with the lowest combined total of points and votes was Aaron & Karina.
Len took a moment to tell Aaron how proud he was of him for his dedication week after week, and said he was an inspiration for young people.
