Not as expected ending
hey-1605124 February 2022
I enjoyed first part of this series . It's good and enjoyable but i don't know what's wrong with the story at the end. Slightly disappointed tbh. I was rooting ao hard for Them and the story progressed like that but ending is so much disappointing.

The writing tricks u to think now they will be fine but even in the last ten seconds of series nothing will be fine and it will throw u with not even a well cliffhanger.

What is success ?
alaningle716 February 2022
This short series is based on a manga and tells the stories of a group of ladies living at the top of a high rise who all enter into affairs. It has a main story running through of a successful businesswoman and a goldfish seller and these two appear in a thread throughout the series. Over the eight episodes it also looks at five other women who enter into extra marital relationships and their reasons behind that decision. It is quite an erotic series and it may overdo the titillating sex scenes but it does not judge the women and leaves you to decide if the ladies actions are justified.

Narcissistic personality disorder
rebeccamalmborg24 February 2022
Warning: Spoilers
I was captivated by the series' thematic topicality and depiction of a problem that seems quite prominent in the Japanese society of today.

Violence in close relationships is an important topic to address, which it does well, but I miss that the detail that Takuya Hiraga "suffers" from narcissistic personality disorder never was addressed. With this knowledge, it becomes a little bit clearer why Sakura chooses to help Takuya get back on his feet after the divorce and why she chooses to throw away the only functional relationship she ever had.

Some things should clearly remain unsaid in a series so that the viewers can speculate about it themselves, but when it comes to this, I do not think so.

Goldfish and Life
albertval-695609 March 2022
It's a good movie pulling all the right strings that keep you engaged. It's erotic but it has a lot of sensible, heartfelt drama to offer. While it revolves on Sakura and Haruto, the stories of other women living in that high-rise condo are fascinating, too.

Rhiko Shinohara shines as Sakura. The character playing Haruto succeeds in making him too good to be true. Is he for real? So cool and so mature.

Women don't have to live in a fishbowl because they can decide to be free and be what they dream to be with determination despite the odds.

Sakura The Fool With a Terrible Final Episode!
spasek6 June 2023
Warning: Spoilers
Unfortunately, I have found that Japanese dramas are much more hit-and-miss than K-dramas. You know you're taking a chance. This series is actually pretty decent until the absolutely horrendous final episode which makes as much sense as a five-legged mule. I'm not sure if the writer was drunk that day or simply lost all control over the story and the characters.

The series is about a collection of wives who are involved in affairs, although the focus of the show is mostly on Sakura, who finds herself in an abusive relationship with her husband who beats her and cheats on her. He's basically an animal who believes that a wife is someone to control and must do whatever he tells her. In short, he believes that a wife is property.

Of course, we have a plethora of reasons for these women. An abusive husband, a husband who continuously ignores his wife, a husband who puts everyone else ahead of her, etc. You get the picture.

The irony is that most people in the world are able to realize when a relationship begins, but very few are able to recognize when a relationship ends. And in Sakura's case, it's only a question of how much more abuse will she put up with until the obvious is staring her in the face. The abused is just as responsible for the situation as the abuser. Remove either one, and abuse no longer exists.

Sakura finally flees her husband and runs into Haruto, a local man who runs a small goldfish shop. There is an instant connection between the two, and we later find that there is an event from the past that also unites them. Haruto is a kind, gentle man who doesn't just sell goldfish. He loves and cares for them. Gandhi once stated that how a person treats animals is often an indicator of how they treat people.

After Sakura finally divorces her husband, she goes back to him to try and save their joint hair salon business-which made no sense. Why not work to open your own? You get bit by a shark once, then you're the fool to go back, hoping not to get bit again. This had me scratching my head. But this wasn't nearly as bad as Sakura leaving Haruto to pursue her career as the manager of a hair salon. Why leave him at all? Why not pursue this endeavor while staying with him? After all, he wasn't an obstacle. It made no sense at all. In the end, she basically used him, and became an abuser herself. When she left, I thought their final scenes were silly and completely unsympathetic, despite them standing there foolishly with tears running down their faces.

Equally sad was Sakura's husband tearfully telling his wife during a mediation session-a precursor toward divorce-that he always loved her but felt insecure. This was the biggest pile of cow dung I'd ever heard in my life! Her husband has no clue what love is, and he never loved his wife. Love is never about controlling someone else, and it certainly isn't about physical abuse or infidelity. It was like listening to a gutless child whining. All victims are cowards because they never take responsibility for themselves. It's always someone else's fault. And yet, Sakura can't see the problem because she's much like a naïve and immature child herself.

Overall, this was a decent series. The storyline involving Hisako and the trauma behind her frequent headaches. That would have made a far more interesting series than centering the story around Sakura. If the end had been done better than it was, this series might have a least been good. It wasn't.

An interesting viewpoint on infidelity
kcgenesian19 February 2022
The series focuses on 6 wives, with the major focus on Sakura i.e our main character for the series. They are all caught up in their own marriage related problems and seek other people to fulfil their desires or deal with their problems. It was honestly a refreshing take, since it was up to the viewer to decide whether the actions of the wife in focus was justified or not. Honestly i really enjoyed the aesthetic of the series and the multiple storylines were sown together well. However, some of the characters extremely pissed me off- Sakura's husband and the wife who stopped running. They made the show slightly intolerable but the other characters made it bearable. THe ending was also left very open ended which could be a bad or good thing based on the viewer discretion. Personally loved how it ended. Definitely a worthwhile show.

Misses the mark
Wolf110117 February 2022
Warning: Spoilers
This series falls flat. Just when things seem to be moving in the right direction they destroy the ending. It like all these women give up there power or cheat and abuse is ok. The ending with Sakura is a joke. I kept waiting for it to improve and it just never does. Don't waste your time watching.

the ending... huft

Warning: Spoilers
I love the storyline, the way i see perspectives from every wives, behind the reason of their infidelity. Noriko and tsuya's story started very awkward but I like them haha. And also I rooted so hard for haruto and sakura but WHY IT ENDS LIKE THAAAAT. DISAPPOINTED ENDING :( it was so sad. And heartbreaking. Nevertheless, I like the series.

An enjoyable J-drama
TheGodFrom04014 February 2022
Warning: Spoilers
There are a lot of things this tv show does right. The cinematography is really great. They use really inventive camera angles to get a lot of actors in a single shot and (most of the time) this works out great. I speak a little bit of Japanese but not enough to judge if the actors were great or not. However, their acting felt pretty good and there weren't many scenes where I noticed a lot of bad acting (although there are some scenes where bad acting becomes pretty apparent). The score was also really nice. The usage of classical instruments worked really well with the beautiful cinematography.

Now onto the 'bad' side of this show. The pacing in this show is all over the place. The audience does not get enough time to process all the information that the show is giving. There are also a lot of plot lines that the audience has to keep track of (there are several housewifes, each with their own story line). The show also has several cliches which I will not explicitly write down because of spoilers. I will however give one example to explain the extremely fast pacing of the show: SPOILER--> The female lead gets into a fight with her husband. He slaps and beats her during this fight and he also smashes her fishbowl on the ground, cutting her hand open. She rightfully flees from their apartment and runs to the guy she bought the fishbowl from. He tends to her wounds and talks to her for a bit (this indicates that he knows that she has had a fight and he also knows that she is married. Later scenes make it even more apparent that he knew that her husband was abusive). After cleaning her wounds they start making out and they even have sex... Why??? It really feels like he is taking advantage of her situation. If they had put an episode between the fight and the love scene it wouldn't have felt so wrong but they put it the fight and the love scene in less than 10 minutes... There are more instances where the pacing of the show is way too fast.

Let me finish by saying that it is really nice to see a new J-drama produced by Netflix. Netflix has a lot of amazing K-dramas but unfortunately not that many J-dramas so it's awesome to see that they are trying out new things. All in all it was a pretty enjoyable show and I hope Netflix keeps making more J-dramas like this one.

Disappointing ending
kishanrekhadia14 August 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Story was going fine until half the episodes. But the very last episode was so frustrating for me to watch. Not only me but many others would agree with me on this that this was possibly the worst ending the writer could have chosen. We all wanted sakura to end up with haruto but that's just out of writers minds. Not only the build up was a little slow but it was getting boring sometimes as well coz the whole story was predictable at some point.

The Show Got Me Mixed in Feelings
letrungtruc29 June 2023
Warning: Spoilers
I watched mostly out of curiosity and those "steaming scenes". But through out the episodes, it felt like encouraging women to cheat. Their marriages are miserable, but instead of divorcing and starting a new one, they decided to cheat. Some ended up doing so, some just want to have the both worlds. I don't know much about Feng Shui, but it was not justifiable. A fortune teller acted like some almighty figure, which makes this show a little more fictional than it should. And then comes the ending, not even cliffhanging. It will make you raise one eyebrow and be like "That's an ending???"

However, I do enjoyed the sex scenes. Especially from the character Nene and Yuriha. Also, the OST is catchy too, performed by the main chatacter - Sakura.

Ending destroys the whole series
rich735425 March 2022
I really enjoyed this series... until the last episode.

The series revolves around the relationships of some couples living in a high rise condo, focusing mainly on a single wife per episode.

Most of the episodes offer poignant, if sometime predictable, stories. The biggest problem I had with the individual episodes was that the writers failed to "wrap things up" before moving on to the next one.

Interwoven through all this is the story of Sakura, who is in an abusive marriage and trying to find happiness away from her husband. Unfortunately, the writers lead you on, and then gut punch you in the final episode with one of the worst endings I've ever watched. Disappointing hardly covers it.

It seems to be a trend in recent series that writers want to give you the worst ending possible.

Alternate end for Last Cinderella?
Jyncs20 February 2022
In Last Cinderella (2013) Ryoko Shinohara stars as Sakura, a hairdresser who is torn between the salon manager and a guy, Hiroto, half her age. In Fishbowl Wives (2022) Ryoko Shinohara stars as Sakura, a former hairdresser who is married to a salon chain owner, but has an affair with a guy, Haruto, half her age. Coincidence? Seems implausible. My interpretation is that FW is an alternate universe continuation of LC in which Sakura had chosen her boss over the young pup, and this is her second chance to get it right. Too bad FW is nowhere near as entertaining as LC. It's impressive how little Shinohara has aged, though.

Not Good Enough
PennyReviews1 April 2022
Japanese Drama "Fishbowl Wives" is a drama about toxic relationships, and wives that are facing various marital problems.

The story starts with the introduction of the main lead and her seemingly perfect life. Things are rushed to have her running away, which was the highlight of the drama. However, she stayed in that avoiding reality phase for the whole drama, until the most cliche thing happened and she had finally to face her problems. The ending was realistic, on that note, and it was probably what fitted the story the best. However, the love story was bleak and boring after a while of not having anything happening.

On the other hand, the short stories that were added on the main one were pretty interesting and some of them often stole the thunder from the actual story.

Finally, the cinematography was pretty, especially the posters for the drama, and the performances were excellent.

So, overall, 4 out of 10.

Gave insightful thoughts about reconcile or breaking up in marriage life
witra_as9 April 2022

Mini series Jepang ini lebih mengedepankan emansipasi wanita walau di satu sisi agak terkesan melegitimasi perselingkuhan, see those sex scenes with purposes.

Your 1st Drama?
AJx9119 February 2022
If this is your 1st drama. Then you will probably like this more than most people. In which case, I would recommend to watch the kdrama movie called-High Society 2018 (Sanglyusahoe) on Netflix.

Other than that, Fishbowl Wives is average at best. But at its' worst, it is like a 4.5 stars-that keeps dragging on and on.

Reason why I say this, it relies heavily on the softcore sex scenes. In order to cover up the weaker elements of the script. Kdramas on the other hand, have less scenes like these, but manage to be more entertaining.

However I will admit the softcore sex scenes were well done, enjoyable, and I hope more dramas put them in. Without sacrificing the storyline, dialogue, and character development.

Loved the story, and chose to see the ending differently
xmasinswiss7 September 2023
Warning: Spoilers
The storyline surprised me in a positive way. I didn't expect to enjoy the show as much as I did.

One thing which bugged me was the English translation. It kept adding unnecessary things which the characters never said, like "my love," "honey," "love of my life..." This really presented some relationships in a more confusing way than in the original. Luckily for me I guess, I understand Japanese, but I was sorry for those who don't because they're missing a lot of nuance due to poor translation which cheapened the story.

I'm not the one to judge the individual relationships, but the ending bugged me. The couple overcame so many obstacles, got accepted by everyone including Haruto's family, and then ... in tears ... they just separated forever.

Why? There was zero reason for this.

I choose to believe that in the last moments, Haruto ran to meet Sakura in the secret place where they had promised each other to meet on that fireworks night, and where she already sat waiting.

Otherwise, the ending invalidates the entire story.

Just skip watching this all together...
yaratzethcastaneda4 July 2022
Meh! I expected more out of this. The story is supposed to be about 6 women and how infidelities affect their marriages. Each one unhappy in their own way but unwilling to leave for x reason. What's really upsetting is this mentality of submissiveness and how dv should be tolerated. There were so many instance throughout this series in which I kept saying they are unhappy, just leave and end of story.

Skinship and bad relations. Even worse ending
izum-1483429 August 2023
Warning: Spoilers
Being from Europe, I'm used to see naked people having simulated sex on screen.

But last year I discovered K drama, which I am a bit addicted to.

There is, however, one thing that I missed on those and that was skinship. I mean, adults who kiss only twice and no tongue. But like statues?

So I watched this drama to get a break. And the first scene was honest about this, nudity and simulated sex. Had not thought that Japanese drama could be like this. Sometimes I pitied the actors. Naked in the shower, seeing chest and buttocks for no reason at all. And the most cringe conversations like the man who wanted his colleague to have sex with his wife to get aroused.

I wondered if this is normal in Japan, to have sex with someone after just meeting them?

But now about Haruto and Sakara.

I rooted for them. Everything was going their way. The divorce from her abusive husband. But then the final episode. What was that?

She goes out for a week to save her co jointed salon with the almost ex husband. Did not tell a thing to Haruto.

But finally she stand in front of him with tears. He guessed it. And agrees?

Are they daft?

Could she not open her own salon and still live with Haruto? He was bot standing in the way.

And then, are they supposed to meet each other at the beach or what?

Haruto:Yes, Sahara. You are the love of my life. But you can go and do what you want to help your abusive husband?

Sakara: Yes, I was so happy here,.but leaving for no reason at all to help my soon ex husband an then open my new salon?

Does not make sense at all.

Disgusting Domestic Violence Justification
jamiebriceml10 March 2023
I've watched many Japanese dramas and this is the worst one I've ever seen. The justification of domestic violence is reprehensible. It feels like the male big wigs in Japanese government have laid their filthy hands on the production of this drama to enforce the "women exist to serve men" mentality upon us. And yet another inconclusive ending that doesn't answer the main questions that are raised throughout the series. Honestly, don't waste your precious time with this pathetic garbage that is afraid to tackle important social issues head on. Just when you think a producer has the guts to take a stand, they once again cower into the shadows and leave you with nothing but disappointment.

Compassionate storytelling
anta-baka19 September 2022
Found this short series by accident on Netflix. The ending left me heartbroken, but with hope. Subtle, compassionate shades, emotionally and morally, a moving story tapestry, well-told. The title arises from a metaphor: goldfish can only grow as much as the fishbowl allows, and if you do not care enough to refresh the water daily, they will begin to sicken and die. Hence, "goldfish wives." But the narratives extend compassion to the stumbling husbands as well. Like Madame Bovary, these characters simply refuse to live without love and happiness. Sometimes, they create an even bigger mess, but sometimes they "jump out of the bowl" and continue to swim.
