"Muse" is Magical
riddmethis2229 December 2010
I must admit, the art work of this title drew me in as I rarely see it for TV shows. Fortunately the entire pilot is uploaded on IMDb's site so I was able to watch it above by clicking "videos" and based on what I saw, I strongly recommend anyone who likes fun to do the same. Without boring you with the entire synopsis, which is also listed above, the plot of "Muse" combines Greek mythology, classic humor and a traditional sitcom all with a modern day edge on the current state of television. These elements are told in the guise of TV writer "Otto Finch" seeking a funny idea for a failing network. Not having much luck "Thalia", the Muse of Comedy appears to help him. Unfortunately she seems to have lost her sense of humor over the years and proceeds to drive everyone crazy with her bad jokes. Of course a beautiful, magical female annoying a confused male counterpart hearkens back to such classics as "I Dream of Jeannie" and "Bewitched", however clever writing and up to date references amazingly make the concept seem new and different. What's really amazing is how the oldest jokes in the book (pies-in-the-face, spit takes etc.) actually seem funny as the audience is let in on the fact that they are the oldest jokes in the book. As this sitcom does have a supernatural element the special effects are actually also quite good, having objects and people pop in and out of scenes ala' the aforementioned classic sixties sitcoms. As far as the performances...the two leads, played by Penelope Lagos & Rudy Cecera, have what all co-stars need (especially ones in practically every scene together)...CHEMISTRY! You believe their problems, their lives and their feelings for each other. The role of "Otto" is played straight by Cecera with excellent timing and the role of "Thalia" played by Lagos combines charm, befuddlement and humor. The timelessness of this idea could have easily been told in the golden age of television yet seems right at home in the current TV landscape. All in all, this adorable little sitcom doesn't set out to solve any problems but merely entertain. And considering the humor of most current day TV shows revolves around who slept with who, I find the nostalgic element and timeless humor of "Muse" not only good family entertainment but a breath of fresh air. I only hope it comes to Nickelodeon, Disney or ABC Family soon so I may watch it with my kids.
