As the hostile environment escalates, our girls are disparaged by their aggressive neighbor, dismissed by the cops, and, it seems, even being stalked by some local men. There was an incredible journey before reaching the perfection that Baldur’s Gate 3 has. This title, made history as the GoTY of 2023. Swen Vincke, the man behind Larian Studios’s ambitious title, began several projects by pitching them on Kickstarter.
One of these games was Divinity: Original Sin 2. This IP made the studio win the rights to make the third installment of Baldur’s Gate. All of this began on Reddit, where Larian Studios was very open to receiving opinions and feedback for Divinity 2, even asking users to make pitches.

Baldur’s Gate 3 won the Game of the Year award at the recently concluded Game Developers Choice Awards. The game has been a huge hit for Larian Studios, and it has added a number of new endings and an epilogue to it.
However, speaking at Gdc 2024, Founder and CEO of Larian Studios, Swen Vincke, has made it clear that his team is not going to release another Dlc for Baldur’s Gate anytime soon. Nor will it be working on a sequel.
Instead, the team is going to be focusing on newer games and will probably go back to its old franchises like Divinity: Original Sin.

Baldur’s Gate 3 took the industry by surprise with a very solid game that took the Game of the Year award. This title, developed by Larian Studios, had an almost fully independent process but a very large budget.
In a recent interview, Swen Vincke, director of the studio, talked about the future of the company and what will come next after this successful project. At Gdc 2024 (as reported on by IGN), Larian Studios founder Swen Vincke confirmed that the studio will not be making any Baldur’s Gate 3 Dlc or Baldur’s Gate 4. Perhaps more surprisingly, he revealed that Larian will be moving away from the Dungeons & Dragons universe entirely for their next project. That news shocked many who not only anticipated more Baldur’s Gate 3 content but expected Larian to continue working within the D&d universe given that game’s success.
In a follow-up statement, Vincke clarified that D&d publisher Wizards of the Coast is “not to blame for us taking a different direction” and even said that Wotc “did their best” and “have been a great licensor for us.” Of course, that just raised more questions about why, exactly, Larian decided to leave the D&d license behind them.

After being found unresponsive at a celebrity rehabilitation house, adult film star Emily Willis, 25, is fighting for her life.
Initial reports suggested the adult star suffered an apparent overdose.
Her brother quickly denied overdose claims, stating, “Regarding the reports of an overdose, we want to clarify that they are not accurate as far as the doctors and my family know,” on the GoFundMe page for Willis.
Willis is hooked up to a ventilator, and her stepfather, Michael, said that her condition is worsening every day.
“We have been by her side as she slowly tries to recover, but it will be a challenging journey ahead,” Michael Willis told TMZ. “Emily remains in a vegetative coma and is fighting for her life.”

Steven Soderbergh is turning up the heat on cryptocurrency scams in thriller “Cold Wallet.”
Soderbergh officially presents the feature, directed by Cutter Hodierne (“Fishing Without Nets”). “Cold Wallet” is set to premiere at the 2024 SXSW Film & TV Festival on March 8 as part of the Narrative Spotlight section; the film is among IndieWire’s must-see picks for the festival.
“This smart, spiky, off-center take on the vigilante genre really kept me engrossed in a how-much-crazier-is-this-going-to-get way, which I love,” Soderbergh said in a press statement after “Cold Wallet” won the Decentralized Pictures and Soderbergh’s Andrews/Bernard Award.
The official synopsis reads: “After losing everything in a cryptocurrency scam, a ragtag team of vigilante Redditors attempt to kidnap the kingpin who screwed them over. But when the home invasion takes a turn for the worst, they become victims in a sadistic game.”

Following The Film Stage’s collective top 50 films of 2023, as part of our year-end coverage, our contributors are sharing their personal top 10 lists.
The world came back in 2023. The box office, the labor strikes, the raging wars, the Who-declared end of official global emergency, the AI explosion. People were stir-crazy, anxious to act, be it in the name of violence or peace or productivity. It’s been a sobering reminder that life fully lived is defined by bedrock tragedy as much as triumph––that to enter back into open community with the rest of the world is to feel the effervescence of life flowing naturally again while simultaneously laying oneself bare to fresh devastation. It’s been a reminder of the duality of being: that real life is much wilder than the movies and yet the day-to-day is still defined by mundanity and monotony––the amassed in-between moments.

The year 2023 was an eventful year for filmmaking, but several independent movies stood out among critics and audiences as major successes.
Some films may have passed under the radar with audience, but accolades at film festivals prove that big budgets aren’t necessary for cinematic success.
Notable highlights in this year’s extensive festival offerings range from the thought-provoking courtroom drama Anatomy of a Fall, directed by Justine Triet, Nicolas Cage’s surreal comedy Dream Scenario with its nightmare twist, to Celine Song’s romantic drama Past Lives featuring Greta Lee and Teo Too in leading roles.
Deadline’s recommendations, which in addition include Divinity, A Thousand and One, Godland, Poor Things, American Fiction and others that you may have missed, should be added to your end-of-year watch lists.

Exclusive: Steven Soderbergh has dedicated more than four decades to shaping his legacy in Hollywood as a director, cinematographer and producer. But instead of splurging on yachts or a home in the South of France, he is investing in the future of independent filmmaking by mentoring directors like Joe and Anthony Russo, Christopher Nolan and most recently Eddie Alcazar. He and Alcazar’s second collaboration (after 2018’s Perfect) is Divinity, which hits theaters nationwide Friday after debuting at the Sundance Film Festival.
The film, set in an otherworldly human existence on a barren planet, follows Sterling Pierce (Scott Bakula), a scientist who has dedicated his life to the quest for immortality, slowly creating the building blocks of a groundbreaking serum known as “Divinity.” Jaxxon Pierce (Stephen Dorff), his son, now controls and manufactures his father’s once-benevolent dream. Eccentric Silicon Valley billionaires who pour their fortunes into sci-fi-tinged humanitarian causes are often preoccupied by one of two problems: curing death, or solving the planet’s looming underpopulation crisis. For every corporate titan who claims to have shaved years off his body’s natural aging process by adapting an all-fungi diet, there’s another one cooking up a scheme to quintuple humanity’s population by spreading us across multiple planets.
In the two-dimensional comic book logic that these dreamers often live by, the two goals seem perfectly complementary. Artificially-induced immortality and rapid population growth are both hedges against the demise of humanity. They’re both ambitious declarations that the miracle of human consciousness will continue to live on no matter what indifference the universe decides to throw at us.
Eddie Alcazar’s “Divinity” offers an alternative point of view. Pulling liberally from 1950s B-movies, film noir, porn, stop motion,...

Spoiler Alert: This article contains spoilers for “Divinity,” which releases in New York on Friday, Los Angeles on Oct. 20 and goes wide on Nov. 3.
In his latest movie “Divinity,” Stephen Dorff’s character is introduced with an extended sex scene and ends the film transformed into a monstrous, muscular creature with a “mushroom cloud” head that looks suspiciously like a penis. It’s not your average sci-fi movie, to say the least.
“Divinity” is a black-and-white, out-of-this-world indie, written and directed by Eddie Alcazar, that premiered at this year’s Sundance Film Festival and received a SAG-AFTRA interim agreement ahead of its wide release. Dorff plays Jaxxon Pierce, the son of a scientist who invented a magical drug attempting to grant immortality. Years later, Jaxxon has taken control of his father’s company and corrupted his father’s original dream. The drug, called Divinity, grants its users youth and beauty,...

Two experimental films executive produced by Steven Soderbergh — Eddie Alcazar’s Divinity and Godfrey Reggio’s Once Within a Time – join Neon’s anticipated Cannes Palme d’Or winner Anatomy of a Fall in theaters today, a bit of counterprogramming on a weekend dominated by Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour.
Divinity, about a dark and creepy future populated by bodybuilders hooked on an elixir for eternal life, “was always made for the theater,” said Alcazar. “But it’s kind of a roll of the dice of what a distributor wants to do with it.” Utopia, which acquired the black-and-white romp — set mostly in a mansion on a desert that looks like the moon — after its Sundance premiere (see Deadline review), opens Divinity at Regal Union Square in NYC, expanding to Los Angeles next week, with a national rollout on 11/3.
There will be opening-weekend Q&As with Alcazar, Soderbergh, star Stephen Dorff and DJ Muggs.

Steven Soderbergh’s Gamble Resulted in Eddie Alcazar’s ‘Divinity,’ One of 2023’s Best-Looking Movies
After writer-director Eddie Alcazar worked with executive producer Steven Soderbergh on the 2018 thriller “Perfect,” Soderbergh made Alcazar the kind of offer independent filmmakers dream of: He would fund Alcazar’s next movie (albeit on a very small budget) with no conditions on the subject matter or style. For Alcazar, it was a great opportunity but one that came with daunting self-imposed pressures. “It’s amazing to have that kind of trust and freedom, but it put a lot of weight on my shoulders,” Alcazar told IndieWire. “I wanted to make him proud that he took the right risk.”
Soderbergh’s gamble on Alcazar’s talent and instincts paid off in the form of “Divinity,” a thrillingly original sci-fi film revolving around a future society that has been irreparably altered by a groundbreaking immortality serum. “Divinity” is a movie of big ideas about life and death and the afterlife, but what...

There’s so much to unpack in “Divinity,” the new gonzo, sci-fi-ish hallucinatory mindf*ck from filmmaker Eddie Alcazar, a director, writer, producer, and game developer who makes his feature-length debut with this bold, experimental new work. For one, Steven Soderbergh is an executive producer, and when the filmmaker co-signs as an exec on a young, new filmmaker, chances are the work is worth seeing. And as per usual, that’s absolutely the case with “Divinity,” a fresh and innovative new work unlike anything you’ve seen in recent years.

Horror Film School is a feature in which talent in front of and behind the camera share the ins and outs of creating the biggest onscreen scares.
Eddie Alcazar’s feature film debut “Divinity” is a lot of things scene-to-scene: a love story; an examination of how a father’s legacy can impact his son; a creature feature; a black and white sci-fi throwback; a stop motion masterpiece. Utilizing his low budget as a way to spark creativity, writer and director Eddie Alcazar successfully develops his dystopian vision of the future in which society is obsessed with the titular drug, which promises everlasting youth. Yet the director pauses when asked if he’d consider his dynamic midnight movie to be “weird.”
“I never really think about that too much,” he says. “‘Is this a commercial film or not?’ That’s a big thing I sometimes think about. It depends on...

This weekend, we’ll be entering new box office territory, as arguably one of the biggest pop stars on the entire planet shares her record-breaking sell-out concert tour to theaters across the globe. Read on for Gold Derby’s box office preview.

The movie will reportedly debut in 4,000 theaters across the country on Friday and dozens of other territories across the world simultaneously.

The future looks more purgatorial than paradisiacal in “Divinity,” Eddie Alcazar’s second feature as writer-director. Like the first, 2018’s “Perfect,” this is a cryptic sci-fi body horror allegory where undeniably arresting aesthetics are nonetheless more a symptom of shallow lookism-based values than the intended critique. Stephen Dorff plays a wealthy recluse peddling the titular mystery serum, which promises eternal youth — though, naturally, there may be drawbacks. This invention attracts attention not just from consumers, but from apparent space aliens who arrive to halt its disturbance of the natural order.
Those looking for midnight-movie eccentricity will find much to enjoy in the black-and-white film’s mix of the trippy, queasy and erotic. But as before, the effortfully quirky elements don’t really add up to a cogent whole, resulting in something a mite too reflective of its creator’s background in commercials and game design — a rarefied, stimulating surface without depth.

Writer-director Eddie Alcazar has undoubtedly infused Divinity with a distinctive look—so much so that the story’s attempt at an excoriation of spectacle and empty pleasure comes off as little more than a reluctant swipe. The style, dialed up from minute one, grows monotonous, all the more so since the film treats substance as an afterthought.
Divinity is a science-fiction tale of the cautionary, finger-wagging variety. In what seems like an alternate version of the 1990s, an aging, laughably naïve scientist (Scott Bakula) aspires to better the world and take the place of God by developing an immortality drug. But the man dies before he can begin testing on humans, and his son, Jaxxon (Stephen Dorff), takes over the family business. Displaying none of his father’s qualms when it comes to harvesting fetal tissue, Jaxxon puts the drug on the market. And as promised by a salvo of pornographic TV commercials,...

Yanet, lateish twenties, opens her eyes, looks in the mirror, takes in air, straightens two braids of hair, hold her head in her hands, purses her lips, is called for her stage test.
She begins to sing. “People say I have to change, but I don’t care at all. I feel so free I could sing on the high-velocity train.”
The trouble is her memorised rap has become a screech and, rather than don’t give a damn, she’s hanging on every word which will be delivered by a judge sitting in the theater, who asks her to stop.

While the sheer power of Taylor Swift scared off a number of October releases to flee further into the year, this month still offers no shortage of heavy hitters. From one of the most-anticipated films of the last many years to acclaimed documentaries to the final feature from a legendary director, there’s plenty to seek out.
13. Beyond Utopia (Madeleine Gavin; Oct. 23)
One of the most acclaimed documentaries of the year, Madeleine Gavin’s Sundance audience award winner Beyond Utopia tracks the intense, harrowing journey of a handful of individuals who attempt to flee North Korea. Considering how few dispatches we see from inside the country, this promises to be a rare, vital look at the costs of freedom.
12. Once Within a Time (Godfrey Reggio & Jon Kane; Oct. 13 in theaters)
Godfrey Reggio, the legendary director of the Qatsi trilogy, is back with Once Within a Time, co-directed by Jon Kane.

Unless Taylor Swift’s concert film truly surprises, we imagine the trippiest film to arrive this year will be landing on the same release date of October 13. Eddie Alcazar’s Divinity premiered at Sundance Film Festival, backed by executive producer Steven Soderbergh, to claims of instant cult classic status and now Utopia and Sumerian have unveiled the trailer ahead of a release.

Eddie Alcazar’s latest movie, “Divinity,” premiered at the Sundance Film Festival earlier this year and had many varied, sometimes puzzled, but dazzled, reactions. Alcazar is no stranger to giving viewers unique moviegoing experiences, and it seems like “Divinity” will be his most ambitious piece of work yet. Alcazar is a director, writer, producer, and game developer. Unbothered by genre constraints, his multi-technique approach to visual storytelling explores undiscovered cinematic territories. He coined “Meta-Scope” to describe a visionary technique that blends live-action and stop-motion.

"This world has been morally corrupted by divinity. We're saving you from making it so much worse." Utopia, Sumerian and executive producer Steven Soderbergh present Divinity, a film from writer-director-producer Eddie Alcazar (his second feature after the experimental Perfect previously). This premiered at the 2023 Sundance Film Festival earlier this year in the Next section, and is set for an art house run this fall starting in October. Two mysterious brothers abduct a mogul during his quest for immortality. Meanwhile, a seductive woman helps them launch into a journey of self-discovery. This stars Stephen Dorff, Moises Arias, Jason Genao, Karrueche Tran, Bella Thorne, and Scott Bakula. Sundance also adds: Alcazar "dazzles with this uncompromising vision that pushes a retro sci-fi styling forward to a stunning and grotesque future. Alcazar leads a skilled team of creative collaborators to construct this world, and together they conjure a boldly lit black and white wonder...

When Starfield‘s September release date was finally confirmed, many gamers suddenly felt bad for Baldur’s Gate 3. After all, what chance did a Crpg sequel in a largely forgotten franchise have of going head-to-head with one of the biggest blockbuster RPGs we’ve seen in decades? The situation was seemingly resolved (or at least downplayed) when Baldur’s Gate 3 developer Larian Studios decided to move the game’s PC release date up by about a month, partially to avoid the competition. Since then, quite a lot has happened.
Baldur’s Gate 3 is not just one of the best games of 2023 but one of the year’s biggest surprises as well. Despite bucking so many modern game conventions, it has exceeded even the wildest sales expectations and has even started a strange debate over whether it’s actually too good. Suddenly, it feels like Starfield is on the back foot.
