Excellent adaptation
bettillee10 November 2023
This is a series that I have waited to see. The book was exceptional comprised of a story that was engaging and kept you wanting more. The series fleshes out the characters, extremely well, and unbelievably, rivals the book. Mia Isaac is beautiful, very talented, and she adds a layer to the teleplay that is exceptional. I especially enjoyed the costuming, because it was very much within the period that the story is set in. The way that Eleanor's hair is styled is truly a throwback from the era that I haven't seen accomplished this well in many other movies, and the settings, London and Scotland, are a beautiful canvas for a very beautiful story. There have been many books written by and about people of color in the last few years, and I have read many of them, but this is the first one that I found that was truly a good book and movie, that has not been hyped simply because it was written by a person of color. I would recommend it to anyone who enjoys the telling of a good story.

I must add this addendum to my review for the simple reason that the ending of Black Cake was extremely disappointing. I don't like to make up an ending that should have been, and although I had given this series a ten, I changed it to a seven strictly based on the fact that the ending was very unfulfilling.

Holding back a star until a few more episodes
hydn791 November 2023
Have an open mind. As someone from the Caribbean this is an amazing show and story. Many of us from African origin have family history that involves boats and stowaways to and from the UK, Portugal and Chinese and Indian of which my wife are all of the above.

Not sure why so many low ratings. The story is engaging and true to life.

Have open mind you might be surprised.

I would give this 10 so far but gave it 8 because I'm only on episode 3.

Hopefully the story telling continues. If I can I will edit this review. I don't post here often but felt compelled to post something positive.

Last year my neighbor explained how she migrated from the island of Dominica to the UK Catholic school to become a registered nurse. She moved back to the Caribbean some 40 years later. There are so many similar stories in this region.

Don't let the majority suppress this gem because it's "different ".

Black Cake delivers an expansive family saga
mendymariamKE7 November 2023
Hulu's new show "Black Cake" is a must-watch.

This multi-generational saga, led by showrunner and executive producer Marissa Jo Cerar, weaves together elements of murder mystery and family drama.

It kicked off on November 1st.

Black Cake delivers an expansive family saga, showcasing mixed-race identities seldom seen in today's TV landscape.

This narrative also mirrors how a hidden dessert can reveal a tumultuous reality.

Beyond garnering critical acclaim, this eight-episode adaptation is a treat that mystery thriller enthusiasts have long anticipated.

The show breaks new ground by featuring a protagonist who is half-Jamaican and half-Chinese, offering a refreshing perspective seldom seen on television.

The casting of Mia Isaac, who hails from a Black and Asian background, - in the role of Covey, is a welcome breath of fresh air in the world of TV."

A good series, 3 episodes in.

Love it!
jsytww11 November 2023
I enjoy this series, different multi-cultural, geographical and generational. I love seeing new talent and feel all characters have a complex enough storyline that we should have a good 5 seasons.

I really love Eleanor. I'm a fan of time-travel- the script does a good job blending past, present for each of the characters without being confusing.

The character backgrounds are revealed with the right timing and having the background makes you understand and empathize with the character being spotlighted.

I hate I found this while the streaming is live - I prefer to binge watch... I'm forced to wait until next week.

High Quality Production
mashadowellonline16 November 2023
This series is amazing. I almost turned it off because of the first 5 minutes... until I saw actor Glenn Turman. His presence on screen grounded the project for me. As I've watched more and more of the series, I am blown away by the storyline and the series' production value. The entire team has brought forth its 'A game.' If I did have a complaint, I am unsure if the storyline with the two siblings is valuable. Yes, it is valid for a book - not so much for a screen. Every time they were on screen, I wanted to get back to the actual story featuring actress Mia Isaac.

I highly recommend that everyone watch this series.

An engaging story that sucks you in.
wearepassionet2 November 2023
Don't let the low rating fool you - this show is a hidden gem! I was hooked from the get-go with a story that just pulls you right in. The whole mystery surrounding Covey's disappearance back in the '60s and how it ties up with the present-day drama is nothing short of engaging.

Now, if you're a softie, be warned - the score is an emotional rollercoaster, and it's setting you up for some serious handkerchief moments in the episodes to come.

I have to give props to the creators for the attention to detail in recreating the era. It's clear they went the extra mile to get the setting just right. And oh, the performances! Mia Isaac truly shines, but I must say, at times Adrienne Warren's theatrical flair felt a bit too much amidst the subtler scenes.

But hey, the blending of family drama with a murder mystery is done so well. The show doesn't just scratch the surface but delves deep into issues of identity and family ties, all while keeping you on the edge of your seat with the mystery at hand. 'Black Cake' is definitely worth a watch,

Strong Start, but Dissolves into a Soap Opera
seemingly_reel16 November 2023
From the start, I quite liked Black Cake, particularly the first few episodes. The plot is intriguing, it's very well cast, and the significant amount of tension makes it work. The sets, costumes, and cinematography are quite fitting. The ocean scenes in the Caribbean have a lush feel, serving as an effective contrast to the troubled relationships.

But something happened around episode 3. It's when I felt that this series should have been produced in a more compressed form. Rather than 8 episodes, how about 6? I've just finished the 5th episode, and I'm further convinced. The core story seems to be diluted by tangents and extra relationships. There are moments of unintended humor in this episode, because it's veering into soap opera territory. I feel a bit let down. I've not read the novel it's based on, but I would presume the script follows it faithfully. I plan to continue watching the show, but it seems like the producers have somehow missed the mark.

Black Cake

Warning: Spoilers
Black Cake is a long interesting show that in my opinion with the multitudes of lesbian relationships reminded me of "She's Gotta Have It". The opening episode was a crazy one like wow how incredibly disturbing. The second episode of escape and freedom was even deeper. The third episode of an entire jump skip of a new life entirely. Luckily for many fictional shows birth certificates don't exist, because obviously none of this would even be obtainable. ID's can't just be faked anymore. I didn't need to see more and more stories non-stop. I don't even know if the kid's needed to know about the mother used to be a lesbian as well that was faking being straight. I understand societal pressures are a thing, but honestly just be who you are or shut up. I saw the mom has been through a lot Elanor was forced to adapt to everything in her life and being forced to marry a 50 year old gangsta was wild. But the story was getting confused to show this strong advancement for this ideal of love with her man just to find out she was interested in a girl as well and it was to ironically fill in the gaps of Benedette's sex life of being bi sexual maybe...or lesbian. I don't even know anymore. Most times for these stories with narrators become ridiculous because there needs to be something to fill in the gaps of schedule. Another thing with narrators is there are moments that could have never been known. Because the person themselves wouldn't have been present for multiple incidents in the story. It probably even represented many Jamaican women experience because there are some heavy pasts behind Jamaican women. Getting raped and for some reason still giving birth to the baby. The scenario's and problems. Once the scene of the daughter being a lesbian I knew this show would be on to end it with lesbian love was what killed Little Man. Most shows with black women being involved in being lesbians it became predictable how it was going to end. The manipulation in this show was crazy. The experiences didn't make sense. Shoot with all of these stories I am surprised there wasn't a series where we find out the protesting Jamaican in England dad was gay at one point also which please do not do. All these people all looked the same age throughout the flashbacks, so it's always hard watching older people attempt to play younger roles. That's why most Disney shows only survive a person's childhood. All these adults are playing teenage roles. Being betrayed by a nun was nuts with her own child. Truly was a story on how cold, confusing, challenging and unfair life is.

Love it so much!
malikagipson16 November 2023
Amazing story. Engaging, heartbreaking, enduring story of survival, love and family. Don't let the bad reviews deter you. I love the layers and the surprises here and there.

I binged the first few episodes so now I'm so excited to see the next one this Wednesday. I now want to go back and read the book.

Eleanor is a fantastic character who takes you on her journey as she lives, loves and learns. I love the realism and the way she overcomes and perseveres. I feel that is the legacy she is trying to pass to her children and why she finally decided to share her story that she guarded so carefully. She is watching her children make the same concessions she once made and wants them to draw strength from her lessons learned.

The adult children ruin this.
willwatch4 November 2023
The two adult children of the main character are so bland, boring and whiny they absolutely pulled me out of the show. Every scene they're in. Every time.

I don't understand why the author of the book and the showrunner, for the miniseries , chose to give these atrociously dull characters so much screen time. The compelling story belongs entirely to the narrator, Eleanor, who has led an incredible life full of hardship and joy across several countries.

The whole concept of the audio tapes willed to Eleanor's children is a wonky framing device to...contemporize the story? Or to give the story cross-generational appeal to boost book sales or bring in more viewers?

I fast forwaded through as many scenes with the siblings as I could, then just gave up. Here's what I gleaned from as much as I saw: Those kids did NOT deserve that amazing mother.

about time that we get a series like this!
pn-989499 November 2023
I'm glad I came across this series. There are so many stories that can be told other than the same plot and storylines that are told over and over again on network tv and in movies. This series takes a colorful journey into the past to retrace the steps of a young girl. During this journey, there are gripping tragedies that go beyond the imagination and keep the pace of personal story of an immigrant led family. Secrets, confusion and broken storylines often blur realities for some people with similar life experiences and again kudos to the author's perspective and producers for bringing this story to light.

Con: although the cinematography is as beautiful as the story the screens are often not well lit and hard to see details even with my HD TV playing in vivid picture.

Something is off in the pacing.
dlwinoregon2 November 2023
Gorgeous to watch with beautiful shots of the locations. Lovely costumes help set the time and the scenes.

The events unravel in an odd pace though. You can't really say the plot is slow, but the buildups to, I think, what are supposed to be "surprise" moments take so long that the moments don't truly land with the impact they were intended to. For example, the first episode could have easily been trimmed down to a half hour, giving the big plot turn(s) more dramatic punch. As it is, most of the important moments hit in the last 10-15 minutes of each episode.

Also, the murder mystery aspect of "Black Cake" isn't a mystery at all. The culprit is pretty obvious from episode one.

Love it, love the layers
positvevibes24 November 2023
This series covers so many important issues, the layers come through seamlessly, so effortless. I love the core story of family secrets but resonates with me is the other sensitive issues that cover race, discrimination, abuse. Love it !! Its definitely gives me an internal dialogue on so many issues. Secrets ... WOW ... & How the older generation is a believer in keeping them & when the one thing secrets never do is to remain hidden. Those things are there to be created and !!! To expose themselves, one way or the other. I am not an Oprah fan, I was worried a bit but happy I gave this a try hope it was longer than the 6 episodes.

Great Storyline and Storytelling
duboisej14 December 2023
This series pulls you in and keeps you engaged. I'm shocked that HULU didn't showcase this series more because the acting and writing was grade A. This is a show that you definitely want to watch and must sit still and pay attention to so that you don't miss any of the necessary details. It's a tearjerker that has moments that make you smile, cry and gasp. It's a love story, a lesson in friendship, love and life. Now that I know it also a book, I am going to purchase and read it as well. Definitely a must watch that I hope they renew and continue to tell the story. If you're looking for something riveting to watch, this is definitely it. Kudos to the writers and actors/actresses.

Thoroughly enjoyed this!
paulahayes8911 December 2023
I didn't know anything about this show except a vague recollection that Oprah had "something to do with it" but didn't know to what degree until I researched a bit on IMDB. I binged all 8 episodes over a long weekend and thoroughly enjoyed the storyline, the cast, characters, and cinematography. I was sorry when the final episode ended. I did not have any trouble following the storylines or empathizing with any of the characters. I very much enjoyed watching so many extremely talented actors bring their complicated characters to life. I will look forward to a potential Season 2. Very well done!

Emotional Story
wroane-881568 December 2023
I would normally give this an 8, but to counteract the inevitable low scores that any shows with black leads garner, I gave it a couple of extra. The story was good, the cinematography was great and the acting was excellent. Some of the story about the kids seemed to slow it down a little, but it did help to flesh out their characters. The lead actress was phenomenal and hopefully will have a lot of work in the future. I hope that a second season is in the works, there could be a lot more of the story about Mabel going forward. I would like to see more on this kind of drama make it to the air to offset the constant slave time stories.

Depressing story about exploitation that is supposed to be interesting for all the wrong reasons
kendallschristopher11 November 2023
This is framed as an epic crime novel but it's just your typical story about the West Indies and what a woman finds herself doing to make it in Europe. She ends up doing what anyone else would in her situation. A lot of grisly tales about exploitation, assimilation, racism, nationalism and a life of being an outsider and a foreigner, no different than the same odds Black people overcome in general.

The only redemption in this story is that the woman learns how to get about without relying on men, but the angst of dating men is not far behind. It goes back and forth in time too much for my tastes and can be a bit confusing if you're not paying close attention. She wants to be involved with a man but can't learn how to do so without undoing everything she's accomplished to reinvent herself and keep preventing people from learning the truth and the identities she's appropriated. Some women are just put in those unfortunate series of circumstances and some create circumstances to get through life. It is what it is.

We already know that we have a hard time in Europe and we know what it was like for our grandparents back in the twentieth century so I don't really understand how this story is groundbreaking when a lot of our elders went through similar things. Things haven't changed that much and a lot has remained the same.

An untold story
lrjorge24 November 2023
A story full of stories rarely discussed and even far less featured in mass consumed media. I was absolutely delighted and excited to dive into this drama. It managed to weave all sorts of real life (and heavy) dynamics from race, gender, sexuality, class, post colonialism, domestic violence, inclusion and diversity, adoption, ocean science, aquatic sports, culinary and visual arts, and family!! All this, whilst hopping (rather fluidly) from the Caribbean to the UK to the US. The acting was on point to; full on winner. Can't beat that with a bat! Now to find the book and read it with glea dammit.

Leave it to Oprah Winfrey to make a mess!
info-907016 December 2023
Good grief! I'm on the last episode, I hope, and it is all I can do to get through it. I have no idea what the original book is like because I didn't read it before watching this soap opera, and now won't read it because of it, but I wish I had because surely, it is better than this. I haven't watched an Oprah production since she destroyed the brilliant Beloved by Toni Morrison and turned it into a weak version of the brilliance that is Morrison. Somehow, I suspect, she's done a disservice with this book too.

Did the woman only grow up watching soap operas? Did she only have melodrama in her life? Is there truly not ONE deeper thought in her head than this shallow, absurd nonsense that seems to permeate every fiber of her being, and thus each project that she used her power to take over and destroy. Is there no end to the Oprah effect?

The acting was good. The direction was good as can be for a predictable, repetitive, boring soap opera. How many times must she tell these same stories over and over and over again, as if there is nothing else in life. She has made billions out of selling the same weak, limited stories about black people over and over and over again, like Tyler Perry, BET and more.

Black people come in so many different versions, I was truly encouraged when I saw that the main character went to Scotland, but no, yet again, we have to see the same thing over again. Really, more than enough. It is boring.

Stop making intelligent black people stupid enough to go mad and assault somebody. Stop making black artists dingy and idiotic. Stop reducing black women to emotional balls of bad decisions. Benny, the daughter is just a simpleton. Really, an insult.

It is all exhausting, limiting and absurd. The story should have been a movie and not a series, and perhaps it would not have been as annoying, if there was less of it. That's it for another 20 or so years for Oprah for me. I just don't need the triteness that she encourages.

And of course, the music was too much all the time.

What a fabulous series!
bensoncarol22 December 2023
It's only been a few months since I read the book and I always prefer the book. I can't say that this time. The first couple of episodes, I was enjoying it but "making sure" it was staying true to the book. Then I just fell into the series. I can't say enough about the excellent casting. Also am absolutely stunned by the acting of the principals. Both the youngsters and adults! This is the first review I have ever written. Yes I do rate what I watch and have given other things a ten, but this is the first time I have been compelled to write a review. Kudos to the director, art direction, set design!! Everyone associated with this project.

Worth watching
francoeric356 December 2023
Well is worth it. Love how they brought the time to life so realistic. Some little parts are boring but still have me glued to the rest. No my kind of movie but I truly enjoy watching every single episode. I got hook by a single scene from TikTok. It make me feel like I was part of it. Is well written. The young woman that play Covey is a star in the making. All the locations are beautiful to watch like pause and enjoy the view.

For me is the best thing I've watch in a long time! Is unpredictable and intriguing. It keeps me engaged throughout the whole series. Now I wait to see is they came back with season 2 I can't wait and hope they (producers) don't take too long in deciding on it.

Wonderful series except...
kimkenyat27 December 2023
Warning: Spoilers
I thoroughly enjoyed this series. As also someone that grew up in the Caribbean and have eaten a lot of black cake over the years it was good to learn about the origin of the cake. I wasn't aware that it was a take on the British plum cake. Not being Jamaican on my island we do not use royal icing and serve large servings, but cut into small squares where the wedding guests would take as a favor.

I liked all of the characters with the exception of the daughter Benny. Only because in my brain her insecurities just didn't ring true, especially getting involved with an abusive man. I say this because she saw the type of relationship that her parents had. Her father loved and ADORED her mother. Being female, my understanding is most women fall into abuse relationships if there is a lack of a father in the home OR a man that abuses the mother so that is what they are used to. She had supportive parents. They allowed her to drop out of 2 different college programs, and because she was called out about her tom foolery all of a sudden her parents don't love or support her? Nah not believing that one at all. Especially since coming from the islands or having parents that are from the islands...you learn not to be foolhardy with money.

I also didn't like Byron's girlfriend at the end. I believe in a woman's right to choose BUT her having doubts about becoming a mother...that one didn't ring true with me either considering Byron's character and her age. She looked like she was in her late 30's. I haven't read the book so I can't compare it with the series regarding whether or not Byron had a girlfriend.

I enjoyed Byron and glad that he showed his a$$ at the panel discussion. Yes it was accurate experiencing the micro aggressions because in certain spaces you ARE the only one.

That ending?!?!
walkermeg17 March 2024
I would've rated it higher. I thought for the most part this series did a fairly well job portraying the book until the ending. Of course there were other things I would've like to have seen- mainly bunny and covey's reunion. But then the way they ended it with like a cliff hanger as if there were more to the storyline. The book ending was better and the ending of the show was getting there and then they had to add this little mystery to Mabel's storyline. Like are you continuing the series-are you pulling some weird crappy series like big little lies when this would've been a perfect one and done season series? In until the last 3 minutes, it was a beautiful series.

Unbarribley dramatic
moussamhanna6 December 2023
Masterpiece by some inexplicable standards, follows the riveting lives of characters whose lackluster existence is matched only by the mundane script they reluctantly deliver. From the jaw-dropping plot twists that never materialize to the mind-numbing dialogue that leaves viewers yearning for excitement, this overrated series manages to transform the extraordinary into the painfully banal. Each episode feels like an eternity, as the characters navigate the pedestrian challenges of their vapid lives, leaving audiences questioning the value of their precious time. In an attempt to inject a semblance of depth, the series relies on absurdly contrived scenarios that only serve to accentuate its laughable shortcomings. In the end, it stands as an unintentional masterpiece of tedium, leaving viewers to ponder the true meaning of boredom.

Extremely inauthentic - Casting missed the mark BIG TIME!
smcinto12 January 2024
Why oh why do production companies persist on casting non-Jamaicans in Jamaican roles?

There are enough talented actors in Jamaica who could have made this production more authentic, but oh no they went along with the standard trope that anyone can 'sound' Jamaican accent. This is insulting as the ones in this series sounded dreadful, but I feel that this was done for the American audience (I am British born of Jamaican parentage).

I'm quite sure that some of the individuals have good acting abilities, but my gosh casting them in this production was simply wrong and ruined what had the potential of being a great show because I cringed everytime one of the 'Jamaican' actors spoke.

I will read the book instead as I feel that this production does not honour what was written by Ms Wilkerson.
