This nature study featurette, in Technicolor and with expert narration by
Thomas Mitchell, was made in the mountains of Virginia, where whitetail deer abound under the protection of state game laws. Two hunters, parent and son, stalk the deer in the autumn and in the snowy winter and, along the way, the spectator catches sight of squirrels, raccoons, beaver, grouse and other birds. Some light comedy touches are supplied by the son, who suffers buck fever and forgets to cock the hammer and thus loses shots. Inaugurating RKO's Wildlife Album series of color featurettes, "The Whitetail Buck" is an unusual type of picture, combining the beauty of the woodlands, the interesting wild life that it harbors, and human beings who seek to understand and enjoy it.
