Over the years, we have heard multiple stories about the despicable things rich people will do to make money. It follows the usual line of committing fraud against the government or stealing the pensions of the workers. Sometimes it involves selling illegal drugs to athletes or committing insider trading. All of these things are typical with rich people gaming the system, but killing horses for insurance money?
I can live with someone using offshore accounts or manipulating stock...those are the usual shady maneuvers that I understand and can easily get angry about. But I am perplexed about killing animals, especially in a way that is pretty gruesome and heartless. I had heard about these particular schemes before, but rarely did I know about the details. It's pretty gross, and it is a shame that this sort of thing is probably still commonplace. It's bizarre really, that one would go so far just to make a few extra bucks.
The only thing that continues to sadden me is the fact all of these people got off relatively light, which seems to be the most reliable thread associated to these crime and punishment stories. No one...if ever...gets their just desserts.
