I will say this, I love this Bad Sport series. Exposing the world to controversies from different sports is a nice revelation compared to the nonsense that ESPN continues to push. We don't need more documentaries about Los Angeles and New York sports teams thank you very much. If anything, this just proves that sports does have a universal tenet....money.
In the finale of the first series for Bad Sport, we get to see the story of Hansie Cronje, a well respected cricketeer who lost it all for a little extra cash in his pocket. Cronje unexpectedly became the captain of the young South African team, freshly accepted once the rules of Apartheid had been lifted from the country. The team was expected to be a unifying symbol for the country moving forward, and Cronje was the face of this change.
Unfortunately, Cronje's need for money hurt his chances of canonization. While corruption in the world of Cricket is not uncommon, seeing it happen to a man that was revered for being of sound foundation made it earth shattering. The worst part is that Cronje used his power and placement within the cricket community to hurt his own players, especially the minority players during a racial climate that was still uneasy in South Africa.
It's unfortunate that Cronje gave it all away for some extra cash, but of course....this is sports.
