Lies Between Friends-Reunion, Murder, Mayhem **1/2
edwagreen4 August 2010
Warning: Spoilers
This film starts out as dull as ever until Kay, one of the friends, takes a dive off the roof of a house. No, it's not suicide either.

At that point, the film becomes interesting as her former friend and police officer begin to investigate the Kay's life. She was depressed, despondent and melancholy. Yet, no one believes that she jumped off. Sounds like she was pushed off.

As the details begin to unravel, you'll be able to put two and two together.

The beginning scene where there is girl talk among the reunion at a pre-wedding is so absolutely boring.

Attention begins to immediately focus on the handyman. It looks like we have a story when it turns out that the latter has run away as he has been accused of fraud.

Then we hear about Laura. The most conservative of the group, she wound up pregnant while in college. What does Laura's alleged pregnancy have to do with Kay? Why was the Anwar character's boyfriend with Kay just before he was killed in a motorcycle accident? What's going on here?

Truly truly superb acting and directing
true2himself11 December 2011
Lies Between Friends will not flood you with a barrage of special effects, hit you with an endless stream of twists & turns or overwhelm you with an over-dramatic portrayal of events.

Instead, it gives you something that is rarely seen (in my opinion) on the screen - a bunch of actors interacting with reach other SO naturally you forget they are actually acting. Their mannerisms, personalities come through with so much natural presence, you can't help but get sucked into the dialog.

If you prefer QUALITY acting over a bunch of explosives going off like it's 4th of July, then you are in for a real treat. The characters are so convincing and the story flows so naturally, Lies Between Friends makes for a rather riveting watching experience. Kudos to the director.

A very, very slow mystery
HallmarkMovieBuff7 August 2010
Warning: Spoilers
This is not your typical "Agatha Christie" wherein lots of suspects are introduced and the reader/viewer is tempted to figure out which of the herrings are red.

The primary protagonists here, Joss and Cait, former friends and roommates who have had a falling out, are introduced fairly early on, when Cait visits Joss to give Joss fair warning that Cait will be attending the bridal shower of one of their college friends, planned as a weekend getaway of the old gang.

About one-fifth of the way into the movie (one-sixth if one considers the commercials), Joss and Cait are on the roof having a strained conversation when Cait tells Joss that she wants to come clean and explain what happened the night Joss' fiancé died. The time is apparently not right, however, because when Cait tells Joss that she'll know the whole story before the weekend is over, Joss replies, "How about now?" But the scene ends without another word.

Well, the answer, dear Joss, is "No, not now," because we still have most of the movie to go.

As fate (or a drawn-out script) would have it, Cait dies before spilling her guts, and Joss turns detective to find out how and why Cait died.

What follows is not a lot of twists and turns designed to confuse the viewer, but a long and winding road with threats of detours, but no sharp curves or roadblocks. During this part of the movie I dropped its rating, already below average, to a 3, because really, this whole thing could have been wrapped up in an hour. There is way too much filler.

To engage the viewer, more of the up-front time could have been better-spent introducing *all* the characters in more depth to give us more to chew on as Joss threads herself through the mystery of Cait's death. As it is, however, all the reveals come in the last ten minutes and the climax is dropped like a bomb with little or no forewarning.
