Love Brit Marling!! Off to an amazing start!

Had no idea what I was getting into. Wanted to start a movie or show thinking I would eventually fall asleep to it. I put this on with no expectations, but wow. I was drawn in almost immediately! Obsessed with the mysterious, dark vibe that the show gives off! When I saw Brit Marling was the wife, everything made sense...why I loved it so much, why the series felt so top notch. Brit is truly incredible! The OA is still to this day my favorite show on Earth! If only it could've gone on a little longer. Anyways, back to A Murder at the End of the World- captivating storyline thus far, acting is incredible, video reography draws you in. I can't wait to see more. Hoping it continues on this path of impressiveness and blows us out of the water! We've been needing a good series lately!

Brit Marling project... Yeah, I'm in.

I'd seen this show popping up on hulu and mentions a few other places. It sounded interesting, I enjoy true crime stuff and live Clive Owen. I didn't watch trailers so didn't know much beyond that. So, I'd figured I'd give it a go at some point. Just finished another series and was looking for my next one, decided to look more into this. I saw it was Brit Marling's new project (along with Zal Batmanglij) and I no longer had a decision to make. I HAD to watch it. I absolutely have loved all of her projects... The Sound of my voice, Another Earth, The East, and of course The OA (I'm still sooooooooo ticked at Netflix for cancelling it, I was dying to see what would happen next! Honestly, that helped along my decision to cx my Netflix sub). Anyway, episode one definitely pulled me in. Great visuals, love the song choices, cast seems solid, intriguing characters, interesting start. Exciting to see where this show goes! On to episode 2!

The start of something excellent
gsadler-8847516 November 2023
Brit Marling and Zal Batmanglij open their new project with as much heart and mystery as expected. With their first on screen project since Netflix's "The OA", we follow Darby Hart - a true crime author and sleuth hacker who is invited to a major tech conference out in Iceland. Although the main mystery of the show is not unveiled until the end of the episode, we are given snippets into Darby's life as the daughter of a coroner and her interest for crime and taking investigations into her own hands.

It becomes clear quickly into this episode that this is a modern approach to the traditional "whodunnit" format, with Darby being labelled as a "Gen-Z" Agatha Christie of sorts. Whilst one could argue we have seen this done already in the last decade such as with the success of Knives Out, I think what makes this shows approach unique is the unfamiliarity both we as the viewer and Darby are placed in. The choice of shooting in Iceland was a very clever way to portray exactly what this show is - a beautiful mystery. There is not much to discuss in terms of the writing as I expected nothing but excellence from Brit and Zal, however credit is to be given in what was an intriguing premiere that I hope continues the trend of both beauty and mystery.

Episode 1

Brit Marling's last show The OA was a trippy mindbender that was thoroughly entertaining. This one, a little less trippy, but still quite entertaining.

There's a lot of time jumps and questions about whether this actually happened, but that is to be expected in TV these days. It is a simple but effective storytelling device.

But this was a good start for sure. We knew how it would end, the title kind of gave that away, but it has me intrigued by where things will go. They made you pay attention to every tiny detail because you know they will come back into play as things go on. That is good writing.

Chapter 1: Homme Fatal
Prismark1030 November 2023
It starts off with a grungy podcast type opening. Gen Z sleuth Darby Hunt attends a book launch.

She recounts how she and her boyfriend Bill Farrah came face to face with a serial killer in his own home six years earlier. A man who targeted young women.

Darby seems to leave out a lot regarding this encounter. What happened with the serial killer and why she had not spoken to Bill since then.

Now tech mogul Andy Ronson (Clive Owen) has invited Darby to his retreat in Iceland. A gathering of original minds.

When she arrives at the retreat. Darby meets Bill, now known as the artist FANGS.

Going by the first episode. It looks to be aiming to be something like Agatha Christie's 'Then There Were None.' It definitely lacks the pizazz of something like Knives Out.

The pacing was really an issue. Some of the characters attending the retreat with Darby and Bill were dull in the opener.

So far an expensive failure
trajan9624 December 2023
Film making is exactly like a souflee. One mistake and it deflates. Multiple mistakes and it becomes tedious and torturous to get through. First episode in a series is effectively a pilot and it better be close to perfect. This one is rife with pacing and directing errors. Why does the lead character wobble through scenes like she's on tranquilizers? Instead of making her enigmatic it's so devoid of energy as to be outright boring. It's an intriguing story line that properly handled could be very compelling. Extraneous dialog , unsympathetic woke characters, dull pacing miss a multitude of what could be stellar moments. Hire a director who has the talent to create suspense. Great locations and technical standards.
