Just incredible

Warning: Spoilers
Let me be one of the first, and not even close to the last, to say that Paul Walter Hauser deserves the Emmy for Outstanding Actor in a Leading Role For a Miniseries or Movie for his absolutely terrifying and heart-stopping portrayal of Larry Hall. I've never seen a more believable serial killer on television, ever. And the moment where Jimmy FINALLY confronts him as the real him and shows who he is - just outstanding television. It's sad to see such a sad ending for Jimmy's father, the late, great Ray Liotta but what a show. I hope this episode remains one of the highest rated television episodes ever, it deserves it.

First of all: Rest in peace Ray, you did good, as always.

That Larry character: it's some serious acting there. If that is'nt emmyworth acting i Don't know what is. I recommend to watch series called kingdom(not that famous one, i mean that series what came 2014-2017) he is so good in that series.

Not the Best prisondrama what i have seen but definately a decent one.

Award winning worthy!!!

This was an amazing mini series! The writing, directing, cinematography...all of it was outstanding! This show, without a doubt, should receive nominations!!! The acting was unbelievable!! I have been a fan of Paul Walter Hauser since first seeing him in the Audience Channels Kingdom, where he played an eccentric character named Keith. I also thought he was great in Clint Eastwood's Richard Jewel. However, in Black Bird, he has given his best performance yet!! I would be completely shocked if he didn't receive any nominations for his portrayal of serial killer Larry Hall. Apple TV has, in my opinion, put out one of, if not the, best show of the summer!!

Truly Amazing Ending.
beany_jazz10 August 2022
Warning: Spoilers
When Jimmy is on the airplane talking to the air stewardess Tori, you're made to believe after all his anguish that he might be back to normal as he's chatting her up.

Only then to look out the window to see fields (and he instantly thinks about where the girls might be buried), it's a clever way of showing that even now he's free, what he knows/has heard from Larry will remain with him for the rest of his life.

To me it was an incredible show, especially the last episode, and (for me) especially the ending.

And I love The Verve :)

Last of six parts is the best of the bunch!

Warning: Spoilers
I rated the third episode 8.5/10 stars, because it seemed each new episode of this miniseries was getting a little bit better than the previous one. And this final part is a solid 9.5/10. (If you can't tell, I don't give out 10/10 reviews, especially to TV, since "perfection" is truly hard to come by.) The actor portraying Larry Hall has the showier role, and the other principal cast members (like Greg Kinnear) have one episode in which they really shine, especially the late great Ray Liotta. But the character of Jimmy Keene is the guy that literally "wrote the book" ("In With the Devil") on this case IRL, and this finale is a showcase for Taron Egerton, who plays Jimmy, to pull out all the acting stops. BIG SPOILERS AHEAD: By the end of it, a judge notes that Jimmy was an ultra-cocky SOB headed to his 10-year, min. Security prison sentence (back in Ep. 1), and had lost almost (and I say "almost" because of that scene on the flight home) all that "strum und drang" after his stint in a max. Security prison in the cell next to the poster-child for the banality of pure evil, Larry. It's a bit disappointing to learn that the map Jimmy tried to recreate while locked in solitary confinement, using his own blood on the cell wall, didn't lead to unearthing the graves of Larry's many victims but the fact that Larry will be ineligible to even be considered for parole within his lifetime is a bit comforting. This miniseries is a gem. 9.5/10.

Something in my liberty

Bravo Dennis Lehane!

Predictably Lehane puts together yet another fantastic piece of film, the entire series is fantastic. All facets of production are top-notch, the writing and dialog is as good as anything that has aired in years. The score and musical production magnifies every facet of the series, truly special. All the actors were well cast, and all hit their marks, the back and forth between Egerton and Hauser is an absolute highlight. What truly makes this series work, the pacing and edit. Six episodes was absolutely the perfect amount to tell this story, so many miniseries stretch out thier content to fill 8, or 10, episodes and it destroys the pace of the series, not here though. The series is very, very similar to The Night Of, the best comparison I can think of, and about as good as dramatized true crime can get.

Great episode, satisfying conclusion to a dark and absolutely compelling drama.

Warning: Spoilers
This show was greatness. Well worth the watch. Had no idea this was a true story till it was over and I began my research on it.

I personally got very emotional at the end with Jimmy getting to see his father before his passing. Cut deep knowing that Ray Liotta soon after passed.

If you've not see this miniseries, take the 6 hours to watch it. Great story!

Wow...just wow!

Warning: Spoilers
This series started off pretty good. The episodes were well paced, not giving you too much, keeping you guessing and wondering. Feeling a bit like Jimmy hoping for info from Hall, but only getting bits and pieces along the way and feeling frustrated & wanting to just beat the confession out of Hall but still wondering did he do it (I had a moment thinking his brother did it or was involved)

Then this episode!! We all know it's the finale, so just waiting to see where it ends up. Surely there'll be a confession. But will Jimmy get one AND make it out. Will he just kill Hall himself. Still we're on the edge of our seats, waiting and hoping.

The moment he got the confession was brilliant acting by both Hall and Jimmy. And now Jimmy is in solitary and I'm just yelling at the tv for someone to just listen to the man!! Wondering if he's gonna get stabbed or something. Such an emotional roller coaster!!

Sigh of relief and cheering when Jimmy finally tells the FBI, and you can see his pain from all the nightmares Hall left him with - remembering all the details. And the court room scene when Jimmy gets his freedom - brilliant acting again, had me feeling all emotional. Truly believable performance.

I still couldn't believe this was based on a true story. Not sure if it all went down the same way as this show, but regardless - this was amazing TV watching. Hope it gets some oscar or award - especially the main cast: Taron Egerton and Paul Walter Hauser were amazing! Some of the best acting I've seen in a very long time. Just pure brilliance!!

Also can't go past Sepideh Moafi, Greg Kinnear, and Jake McLaughlin. Great performances.

And finally, but not least - Ray Liotta (RIP). Brilliant performance as has always been the case of this acting genius!

So emotional, Jimmy wanted to be a huge help to help the families, It shows that he's a good person now, also the only one who saw "The real Larry" he didn't want to let a monster out of prison.. and he did his best!

Paul Walter Hauser

What a great performance from this guy!

A breathtaking performance by Paul Walter Hauser who managed to play a psycho-killer - perhaps more than the killer himself - deserves an Emmy award.

Warning: Spoilers
A little unrealistic at times. The guards would not throw Jimmy in solitary for no reason.

But this was a great journey that will probably get some Emmy love come next year.

Does not make any sense. Very Disappointing finale to a mediocre show.
max_k_2230 August 2022
Warning: Spoilers
He is not afraid at all after he got ratted out and everybody knows he is a snitch? Why is he not trying to get Larry to let him use his phone credit?

He blows his cover in front of Larry completely unnecessarily.

How much time does he need to get the idea to use the wall instead of a pencil?

Did I mention that he seems to have a photographic memory? Useful coincidence.

They break the brother by just having a casual conversation with him? He confesses to his brother raping a girl. You've got to be kidding me?

The show was getting worse and worse with every episode but this finale tops it all. Nothing makes sense. Completely lacks any kind of logic.

One of Apple's Best Tv shows yet.
moviesfilmsreviewsinc12 August 2022
Episode 6 of Black Bird starts with Jimmy having a bad dream. He's imagining himself in Larry's place; he's choking out girls; disagreeing with his father; he's also playing football. AppleTV have been on a roll this year with some absolute bangers. After Shining Girls, Severance and Pachinko, Black Bird has followed suit with a really solid and smartly written drama. The show has managed to blend excellent acting and a simple but effective storyline into this 6 episode miniseries. The ending gives no illusion over how this one has ended and I'd be really surprised if we get another season. Everything here is wrapped up while simultaneously doing enough to make for a solid watch on its own. Jimmy Keene manages to get a confession from Larry eventually, and although the story is quite straight forward, the way it comes about is anything but. There's a lot of intriguing elements to this show and the writing has been solid across the board. Ultimately, Black Birds bows out with a great finale, rounding out this series on a high.

When Jimmy eventually wakes up, Larry is watching him from the edge of the cell. Larry mentions his stories, as Jimmy challenges him and wants details. Eventually, Larry grits his teeth and squares up to Jimmy. "I'm not lying James," He says. Jimmy isn't convinced, pointing out that he has "wannabee" eyes. When Larry leaves though, he tells his friend to meet in the woodshop later so he can show what sort of eyes he has. Gigante waits for Jimmy outside his cell with his boys. He throws an ominous threat his way, before walking off. With this rattling around in Jimmy's mind, our protagonist shows up at the woodshop as promised. He's carved 21 birds. Apparently he's the carver while Gary is the one who paints. The birds watch over the dead, guiding their spirits and making sure they're okay. Now, that means if there are 21 birds then there could well be 21 dead bodies too. Larry tells Jimmy he's part of something bigger. Folding the clothes are apparently an act of kindness for a deity. And the person's clothes? Trisha Reitler's. Larry also admits to killing her, and goes on to nonchalantly declare he's dug so many graves - including Tricia's. According to Larry, Tricia's grave is the best he's ever dug and no one will find it. He also knows exactly where that is - including "everyone else's" too.

To Be Seen
dannylee-780822 September 2022
I love the initial dream sequence. Truly fantastic. Hauser was truly nuts throughout the series. When he lost his mind after Jimmy blows his cover, it was quite something. I loved seeing how the relationship between Larry and Jimmy evolves and also observing Jimmy's deterioration as he walks closer to the touch of pure evil. I slightly spoiled myself as I was reading the wiki about Larry Hall so I knew about the map and its effect but regardless, I thought it was a strong final. I was glad that this had somewhat of a happy ending.

The series overall was definitely reminiscent of modern true crime greats like Mindhunter and is definitely well made. Loved seeing Egerton expand his spectrum. Him and Hauser were standout performances consistently. I'd recommend the show to anyone and especially for those who are into true crime!

plot problems, great acting
nerrdrage7 January 2024
After having seen the whole miniseries, I'd say that the plot problems could be explained by this show being based on real life. I'd assumed that it was a fictionalized version of true events, but if the following really did happen, then the cops prevailed only by sheer luck.

-The FBI did not prevent Jimmy's dad from screwing up the operation. They could have told the warden simply to not let anyone visit Jimmy. Or they could have brief Jimmy's dad on what not to blab loud enough for everyone to hear. You'd think an ex-cop would be a bit more discreet.

-When Carter first started threatening Jimmy, why didn't he go to the shrink/FBI lady/warden and tell them to fire Carter for endangering the operation.

-Why didn't Carter worry that he would be fired for endangering an operation was obviously an operation backed by the warden?

-Why wouldn't the FBI pay $10K to prevent a civilian from being murdered, who they had coerced into a dangerous situation? When Jimmy's parents sued the FBI, they could be on the hook for millions.

-Was this operation really so badly managed that the shrink went on vacation and didn't bring his replacement up to speed? If she wasn't trustworthy enough to fill in on all the details, he could have at least made it clear he wasn't a "regular" prisoner. Figure it out, lady.

-How did anyone think Larry's vague map of burial locations would be any use to anyone?

-How did Jimmy re-create the map from memory? Nobody said he had a photographic memory.

-What about the apparently forgotten detail that Larry was at a Civil War re-enactment during one of the murders? Was there a second killer on the loose and nobody bothered to check?

Anyway the acting saves it. And if this is really based on real life then most of the foregoing is just the stuff that happens in real life, rather than weak writing that hinges on characters being incompetent.
