What's a mother to do?
jotix10022 November 2011
Warning: Spoilers
When we first meet Julieta, she is examining her face in a mirror. She shows signs of being tired and we find out why immediately. She has two sons, Valentin, about 7 years old and Teo, about 3, two rambunctious kids that are super charged with all their entertaining distractions at home. Julieta, who is trying to work on a report, cannot concentrate. The children will not let her concentrate. When little Teo falls from a car he was trying to ride over the bed, Julieta realizes she must take him to a hospital.

Julieta's husband had called her earlier to tell her about a problem with a flight he was taking. Now, he is scheduled to arrive the following morning. Julieta calls her mother, who does not volunteer to go with her to the clinic, so she gets the two kids bundled up and drives them to the emergency area. On route, she learns that her husband was able to get on another flight and he will be arriving late that night.

The doctor who examines Teo notices bruises on Valentin. Teo has fractured his forearm, but the x-rays show other injuries they would like to study further. Fearing the cause of the toddler's injury was caused by the mother, he calls a superior, who suspects he is dealing with an abusive mother, one that can harm her children because of her lack of tolerance of the kids' behavior. The doctor in charge, decides to notify the police. When the husband arrive, he is outraged by the accusation, but he must go along. It is clear he blames Julieta for the incident.

The film is a disturbing account of a mother's inability to cope with two active boys. This Argentine film written and directed by Anahi Berneri holds the viewer's attention from the start. Nothing is made black and white, so everything is ambiguous and one never knows for sure whether Julieta could be capable of harming her children. She is a modern woman who must balance home with work and the care of two boys that are a handful. In spite of its claustrophobic atmosphere, the viewer stays riveted to the screen because of what Ms. Berneri has achieved in the film.

The total success of "It's Your Fault" is Erica Rivas, a wonderful actress that shows in her face all the emotions this mother is going through. Ms. Rivas surprises with the intensity of her acting and how she was able to portrays this woman, never making a false move, in a role that few others would have been able to give the same impression. Osmar Nunez is the head of pediatrics. Zenon and Nicasio Galan, who are probably non professionals are seen as Teo and Valentin.
