Many people work hard at cultivating a down-to-earth TV persona. Alex Guarnaschelli simply is that way.
The Manhattan native, of Food Network's "Chopped," "Iron Chef America" and "Alex's Day Off," is devoid of airs. She's making the rounds with her new cookbook, "Old School Comfort Food: The Way I Learned to Cook."
At the time of this interview, she had just won "America's Next Iron Chef," and though seemingly preparing for it her whole life, she was stunned and thrilled.
Her mother is noted cookbook editor Maria Guarnaschelli, and the TV chef is a devoted cookbook reader. While some chefs pride themselves on creating on the spot, Guarnaschelli talks about studying her well-worn cookbooks.
Her notebook on French basics, she acknowledges, is smudged with egg yolk and flour. Guarnaschelli knew she wanted to be a chef since graduating from Barnard College with a degree in art history.

If you're a Food Network fan, it's nearly impossible to miss Alex Guarnaschelli. Executive chef at Butter and The Darby in New York City, she's also been a judge on the network's landmark cooking competition Chopped since its inception, and has her own show, Alex's Day Off.
Many were introduced to Alex when she went after the Iron Chef title in 2011 in The Next Iron Chef: Super Chefs, advancing to the final three.
The latest iteration of The Next Iron Chef brought back only contestants who had previously competed for the title and were clearly seeking what defined the show: Redemption.
Guarnaschelli graciously made time for TV Fanatic last week, and we got to ask her about Tnic: Redemption, her family and what she really loves to cook...

The top three chefs -- Nate Appleman, who made a complex haddock chowder and Amanda Freitag and Alex Guarnaschelli -- squared off on Food Network's season finale of "Next Iron Chef: Redemption" Sunday (Dec. 23), with Guarnaschelli serving up sea urchin to secure her victory.
"I never thought for a minute that I would win," she tells Zap2it. "In the humblest of terms, I never dreamed I would win, and when that curtain dropped [revealing my photo], you could have knocked me over."
"I did tell my parents," Guarnaschelli says. "My mom -- I called her and said, 'I am doing 'Next Iron Chef' again. And she said, 'Oh no, don't do it! You are not good at those things. Don't do it!' "
Guarnaschelli says she understand her mom's need to protect her.

The week foodies have been waiting for has finally arrived -- at least in Canada. Lucky Americans already know who won the $50,000 for their charity in the final episode of "Chopped: All-Stars" (which aired Sunday night in the U.S.) but I've avoided any and all spoilers leading up to Tuesday's Canadian finale.
The final four consists of Michael Symon (who beat out fellow Iron Chefs Cat Cora, Marc Forgione and Jose Garces), Jeffrey Saad (who took on Aarti Sequeira, Keegan Gerhard and Marcela Valladolid), Penny Davidi (who battled former "Next Food Network Star" contestants Vic "Vegas" Moea, Chris Nirschel and Justin Balmes) and Marcus Samuelsson (who, along with fellow judges Chris Santos, Marc Murphy and Alex Guarnaschelli, got to see what it felt like on the other side of the "Chopped" kitchen).
Who else was cheering for Alex? No offence to Marcus (or Chris and Marc), but I've always been a fan of Alex.
