Strictly Come Dancing returns for its 11th series in September and the show is amazingly still in brilliant health. It topped the ratings in 2012 and the nation appears to have fallen back in love with a programme that looked like it was on the way out only a few years ago (that Chris Hollins and Ricky Whittle final... oh dear).
Over the last decade, the BBC and rival channels have attempted time and time again to cash in on Strictly-mania. Strictly Dance Fever (argh). DanceX (ugh). So You Think You Can Dance (huge in America, humongous flop in the UK). That Don't Stop Believing nonsense on Channel 5 (our eyes! Our eyes!).
Not deterred by this long list of lame imitations, ITV is having another crack this autumn. Stepping Out is essentially just Strictly, but without the professional dancers.
Instead we get to see celebrities (Brian McFadden - whoo the glamour!

Arlene Phillips has argued that the BBC's scheduling is partly to blame for So You Think You Can Dance's dip in ratings. The reality show has suffered from low viewing numbers during its second series and the BBC is rumoured to be axing the programme once the current run ends. Phillips told Digital Spy that a constantly shifting timeslot and a young audience who watch the show online explain the drop in numbers. "Everyone can talk about ratings and generally I avoid talking about them. But I'm very surprised. I'm not sure it's a show to put on at 5.30pm. But even last week we got low viewing figures. Is it to do with sunshine? Probably not, because if you really want to watch something you will," she said. "The thing is that our online viewing (more)...

Arlene Phillips has admitted that she struggles to maintain her svelte figure.
The So You Think You Can Dance judge told The Mirror that she has battled with her weight and been on diets since she was just fifteen years old and finds it really ‘hard’ because she thinks about food all the time.
The 67 year old – who we met on Saturday night and found absolutely stunning – said:

The dance expert and talented choreographer was dropped from the BBC dance show in 2009 and replaced by the former ‘Mystique’ singer. Arlene also explained that the TV industry is something of a man’s world, admitting that she would like to have been as famous as X Factor boss Simon Cowell but was never afforded the right chances.

Louise Redknapp has promised viewers that there won’t be any dud finalists on the upcoming series of So You Think You Can Dance.
Reality TV fans who are fed up with wannabes like Wagner and Jedward shooting to fame, can rest assured that while there will be some fun and wacky auditionees on the new season of the BBC dance show, the contestants who make it into the live rounds will all be talented and gifted.
Louise appeared with fellow Sytycd judge Sisco Gomez on BBC Breakfast this morning. A video clip was shown of a mother and daughter act trying out for the panel, and though they were fun and light hearted, they weren’t great dancers. When asked if joke acts could be put through to the final 20 if they have enough public backing, Redknapp shook her head and replied:
I think the integrity of the show is pretty key.

Arlene told The Sun: “I don’t know whether Ann will be as interesting as John or last as long. She could be somebody who people get bored with very quickly.”
Phillips tipped Felicity Kendal and Pamela Stephenson to do well on the series but added that rugby star Gavin Henson will regret signing up for the dance extravaganza.
She said:
“He’ll regret this. On the launch show, unhappy was the word that sprang to mind.”
Arlene isn’t a fan of Coronation Street star Tina O’Brien either.

Last night So You Think You Can Dance treated us to a nonthreatening exhibition round. The competitors weren't competing -- they were simply introducing themselves in cute choreographed numbers for the weeks to come. Totes cute. Anabel Kutay and Chris Piper have become the first contestants to leave BBC’s So You Think You Can Dance.
After performing a Samba and a Jive routine in the first live show, viewer votes left couples Hayley & Chris and Anabel & Drew having to ‘dance for their lives’ in solos in front of the judges. Of the final performances from Hayley and Anabel, Nigel said:

“Anabel you’re so beautiful you remind us all of Penelope Cruz, and we’ve always had so many high expectations for you.
