- Everybody's getting wasted celebrating Jonah's successful breakthrough in selling his "Living in Reverse" script... Lauren and David are total lovebirds. Ella makes the toast, and reveals her intention of landing the actor Jonah originally had in mind, for the project. A-lister Owen Anderson. Ella thinks it is all possible, stranger things have happened, like Auggie and Violet scooting off. Jonah doesn't feel there is much chance. It's all an empty victory for Jonah, there is no magic for him without Riley. David points out to him just how lucky he is to have Ella, but Hollywood's hot new talent needs somebody with a strong moral compass, and, as he then hilariously states in a dispairing tone, Ella doesn't even have a needle.
At the hospital, a patient suffers an allergic response to penicillin. Michael's patient. The patient's file clearly shows the allergy, Lauren points out, then nevertheless covers for him, earning his gratitude. One mistake, Michael says.
Next morning, in the courtyard, Ella proudly shows Jonah the fruit of her efforts. He is on the cover of both Variety and The Hollywood Reporter. When Riley, smartly dressed, a striped tunic very much like a schoolgirl blazer, leaves for an appointment, the news is called out to her, but she simply responds "Congratulations" and walks on. Soon after a hellish noise breaks out from former resident Auggie's abode. The newcomer is Drew Pragin, and he immediately gets onto everybody's nerves with his love for strumming his guitar (unknown to him, hooked up full blast to his stereo) and Lauren was trying to catch up on some much-needed sleep. So, aggravated by the imposition, she rushes into the apartment, surprised to find that the culprit is a manly hunk. But a busy girl, burning the candle at both ends, needs her sleep. And she brings this to his attention. He is rather bemused by her, looking forward to seeing her by the pool.
Riley has her sights on getting an interview with Amanda's billionaire boyfriend Ben. She researched his company, and it presides over an education foundation, and she had launched several projects benefitting first-graders at her school, so maybe he might have a position for her? Only way to find out, is through her acquaintance Amanda, who promptly tells her that she has a snowball's chance in the summer, but at least she loved her outfit. Amanda gets a visit from her financial advisor, and we learn that her previous financial advisor absconded with $15 million, which the FCC cannot recover, it had all been spent. Amanda is broke, and if she continues to withdraw company money, WPK will go under. Upon hearing this, Amanda suffers severe stress on her heart, and has to fight against passing out.
At a go-cart racetrack, meeting with Owen Anderson, an overgrown kid. Refers to Ella as Cruella, his pocket-sized publicist, as he scoops her up in a bear hug. He loved the script.
Riley meets with Ben. She clearly impresses him no end, he has an eye for the ladies, and he goes for her dream of privately-funded boarding schools built in the Inner City.
Owen Anderson finds out that Jonah's story is autobiographical, Jonah is the Jacob in the story, and the real-life Rachel is Riley, whom he dearly wants to meet. Of course, Jonah has his intense misgivings about this, as the relationship has since failed, unbeknownst to the nibbling star. Why let realities spoil the setup? But Ella banks on Riley being a nice person, and reckons she'd help out play-acting for the day, so she is certain they could pull it off. Jonah is not so sure.
At Wilshire Memorial, Drew Pragin turns out to be the new medical student Lauren has to show the ropes. Not such a big coincidence, as Lauren posted the vacancy herself on the hospital's notice board. Drew loves kidding around, urging Lauren to be less staid. While 'putting on a clown face and telling knock-knock jokes' aren't going to cure the patients, as she points out, a sunny demeneaour might do them a world of good.
David gets a letter bequeathed to him by Vanessa after her death. She confesses that Noah is his son, news that stuns him.
Up in her sky-nest overlooking WPK, Amanda is checking out her symptoms on the Internet. Chest pains, shortness of breath. Ben arrives, they hug. "Glass walls, what am I thinking?" she exclaims. Ben relays the news that he is hiring Riley, to which she snidely remarks "I think her only real experience is with untied shoes and fingerpaint."
When going to pay off $1500, Lauren discovers that her unpaid tuition fees, something like $16 thousand, has been paid. Incredulous at the news, she is told by the bursar clerk that maybe she has a guardian angel with deep pockets. Lauren figures it could only be Michael. But Michael says it wasn't him. "You're good, Yung, but you're not that good." Drew comes over to introduce himself, but Michael cannot be bothered to return the courtesy. Lauren giggles, and Drew is glad to see that at least she was amused.
Pitching the idea to Riley that she should play-act, Jonah has an abortive attempt at convincing her, but it would only dredge up more hurt for her.
Michael is holed up at a hotel where he has hung out the Do Not Disturb sign. David calls, adamant to have an audience. Vanessa's letter is handed over, even as David assures him he would not try to get in between Michael and his son. Michael nevertheless sees red and becomes threatening, and a struggle ensues, Michael throwing a punch at David, and David knocking him through a glass wall, collapsing on top of him. Surprisingly, minimal injuries. David stumbles out, leaving Michael sprawled supine on the glass-strewn floor.
Physician, heal thyself. Michael tends to his facial wound. Amanda comes to see the doctor, complaining about her heart. Michael feigns surprise that she even has one. A cursory examination, and Michael inquires re work-related stress, which she denies, nothing more than usual anyway. Michael doesn't quite believe her. He does prescribe something that might help for what he diagnoses as panic attacks, though. She insists on absolute confidentiality.
At Malibu Speed Zone, Riley is stand-offish towards Ella, but Owen is much enthralled with Riley, as the duo reminisce about a costume party that went wrong when Riley, as a 600 lb. Sumo wrestler, got stuck, no, wedged, in a doorway. Ella winces. Her kind of hook-ups do not produce cute date anecdotes, and she feels left out. Pretty soon, though, Riley likens the costume to the prospect of a suffocating marriage, and from there it is all downhill, their secret is out, and Owen, who has a kind of 'young Tom Hanks' vibe, is mortified at the fairytale being ruined. It comes out that it was Ella who slept with Jonah/Jacob, and Owen is dismayed that Jonah could have cheated on Riley, as 'their cosmic destinies were intertwined', but Jonah points out that the relationship had been broken off before. Yeah, Riley echoes, "And who was there waiting? The vulture in Versace!" All this causes the child-hearted star to rather want to skip on the prospect.
Ella tries heading off the fuming Riley as she leaves, and Riley turns nasty on her, belittling her, telling her, smug as can be, she is a home-wrecker that could only commit to a pair of shoes. Ella's eyes turn moist. We see the vulnerable side of Ella, just as we see that Riley isn't all that sweet.
Drew has a terrific bedside manner which stands him on good stead as he coaxes admittance information from an uncooperative patient. Lauren is impressed.
Lauren made a call to Wendi, and now she is returning it. Lauren tells her she is quitting the call girl scene, but Wendi reminds her that she owes her a favor, so one more job. Offering to pay $1500 doesn't help, and Wendi threatens to expose Lauren's wild ways to the Medical Board. Reluctantly, Lauren agrees to that one more appointment.
After hours at WPK, Ella and Jonah in the deserted, but fully lit, offices. Ella is in a fragile mood, having her misgivings about any relationship with Jonah. Figures he and Riley are 'cut from the same snuggly cloth, while she is industrial sandpaper', and explains that she is afraid of any real intimacy because she is scared of having her heart broken, hence her life of commitment-free one-night stands. Why her career comes first, why she is a slave to her BlackBerry, why she'd rather be in business meetings than candle-lit dinners. Jonah sees her in a different light, and, hell, she is pretty, so he there and then decides to rewrite his script. First running some ideas by the (delighted) blonde loveliness, of course...
Melrose Place courtyard. A skeleton is adrift on a lilo in the swimming pool. Doctor Drew brought Sunburn Sally over as a suntanning warning against skin cancer. The gag causes the Lauren and Riley much amusement, and Riley calls Drew over, despite Lauren's protests. She refers to him, jokingly, as having been the thorn in her side all day long. Ben arrives, formally attired, to fetch Amanda for their date at a benefit function, a Save-the-????? not that he cares. Riley invites him to stay for hamburgers, and he'd much rather, but if he spills ketchup on his tuxedo, Amanda would be furious. He instead invites Riley to come along on his next business trip re the education foundation. A flight on his private jet. Overhearing this as she descends the stairs, Amanda, in a magnificent dreamy close-fitting red dress, gets another jolt as her heart acts up. She acts cool and gracious as she whisks Ben off. David arrives, and greets 'the Hollywood power players' and Lauren fusses over his bruises. They are a very affectionate couple. Jonah announces that Owen will take a look at the revised script. Riley overhears that 'Jacob and Rachel' are no longer going to be an item. Lauren gets an SMS from Wendi, and feigns rushing off to heed her on-call duties, much to David's disappointment. Drew offers to stand in for her, but Lauren brushes that off quickly, needless to say. Riley sidles up to Drew. She finds out more about him, he specializes in hemeatology. Lame vampire joke follows, which he wishes he cast aside.
Dressed for fun, Lauren goes to the hotel to fulfill her final appointment. Door opens, it is Michael Mancini. Shock!
Passionate loveplay, Jonah and Ella. Her BlackBerry rings, and she tries ignoring it. Persisting, the offending cell phone is tossed aside. Ella rolls over on top of Jonah and shows him what she is capable of...
Michael gloats over Lauren's predicament. So this is how his star medical student pays off her loan. Of course their indiscretions will not go further than that hotel room, but Michael insists that Lauren should break it off with David. He wants David to feel some heartache.
