The Long Goodbye
The final episode of this enthralling documentary series focussed on the protracted handover from Blair to Brown.
It was obvious that Blair did not want to hand over the reins of power. If Blair had his way he could have clung on and resigned in 2009.
By 2006 it was obvious to me that Blair had his day. He was too tied in too much with the neocons in George W Bush's White House.
When Brown did become Prime Minister. It was a chance to evolve New Labour. Brown made a fundamental mistake, letting speculation of a snap General Election to go on for too long.
It let the Tories to rally and focus their fire on him as a ditherer.
When the global financial crisis happened. Brown finally found his destiny. Unfortunately he neared the brunt of the fallout from that crisis, the cutbacks and the recession. Brown was blamed whether it was fair or not.
Maybe Brown should had gone hard on the British financiers responsible for the crisis. They were always going to back the Tories despite being bailed out by Labour.
The 2010 General Election saw the old band reunited once more. Peter Mandelson had surprisingly become a cabinet minister under Brown. Alastair Campbell returned as a media adviser.
It was not enough although Brown managed to get a hung parliament, he still finished second.
The British electorate wanted to move on. They thought Tory toffs represented the ordinary working person. Some people are easily fooled.
