Chad & Cheryl: First up was Chad Ochocinco, who talked about how his only dance experience is in the end zone after scoring touchdowns. He took rehearsals seriously and told Cheryl not to tell him he's done good unless it was really true. They danced the cha cha cha. Head judge Len Goodman (who was wearing a hat) took it off to Chad, saying he was "a rough diamond" and could use a little polish. He said it was a "great start to the show." Bruno Tonioli said Chad had huge talent, but agreed that he had to sharpen his skills and "I can't wait to see you again." Carrie Ann Inaba agreed there was "some raw somethin' happening" that will take him far. She, too, said she wanted to see more. Scores: 6, 6, and 6. Total: 18.
Shannen & Mark: Shannen said she was doing the show for her dad, who had a massive stroke and loves the show. She said that being judges terrified her and said she'd get hives if she got too nervous. Mark said he had to keep antihistamine ready. They danced the Viennese waltz. She received a standing ovation and her dad cheered from next to the dance floor. Bruno said it was a very difficult piece of choreography for the first show. He said it was very difficult and said she swung her arms around like a primate, but he was trying to praise her, overall. Shannen teared up when they showed her dad in the crowd. Carrie Ann agreed that it was a rough start, but it got better and she saw something in her performance. Len said that Shannen, overall, did a good job and was graceful in her performance. Scores: 6, 6, and 6. Total: 18.
Erin & Maks: Erin said her greatest fear was not being as good as she wanted to be on the show. When they first met, she told Maks that she'd asked for Tony. In rehearsal, she kept stopping herself for fear of having done the wrong steps, which annoyed Maks. They danced the cha cha cha. Carrie Ann said Erin had good moves, but she had to work on her arms and she wasn't hitting her lines sharp enough. Len called her a "funky monkey." He said it was another challenging routine, but said it was really good, overall. Bruno said he liked what he saw and said she did a good job placing her foot down on the beat. He said it was a "wonderful" debut. Scores: 7, 7, and 7. Total: 21.
Jake & Chelsie: Jake presented Chelsie with a rose upon their first meeting, and she assured him they wouldn't be getting married at the end of the show. Jake got nervous in rehearsal because he just wasn't a good dancer. He said he went to practice and felt dumb every day because he kept messing up. Chelsie told him the competition is about improvement, not being great from the start, and off they went. They did a Viennese waltz to Seal's "Kiss From a Rose" (get it?). Len said he liked what he saw, even though there were "a couple of little incidents." Bruno told Jake to bring it down a notch, but that it was good. Carrie Ann said she was "really impressed." Scores: 7, 6, and 7. Total: 20
Niecy & Louis: Niecy said she was kicked out of a dance performance as an eighth grader and she never went back to dancing -- until now. Niecy told Louis in rehearsal that she likes her "jiggly parts," and she wanted to keep them. They danced the cha cha cha. The crowd cheered and Niecy got a bit emotional. Bruno said Niecy had to focus her performance a bit more, because it went in and out of character a few times. Carrie Ann said it was really nice and she liked Niecy's energy and how she added her personality. Len agreed, saying it was "clean, clear and precise." But he said the whole thing was a bit uneventful. Scores: 7, 5, and 6. Total: 18.
Evan & Anna: The gold medalist was setting out to prove people wrong after years of being told that his figure skating is too technical and that his performance showed no dance ability. In rehearsals, spinning in a different direction than he does on the ice was tripping him up. They danced a Viennese waltz. Carrie Ann cheered along with the crowd and said Evan was good, but still had a few things to work on. She reminded him to point his toes and to make a connection with the audience. Len said Evan had "great artistry" and musicality, but he had clumsy feet. He also said Evan and Anna needed better chemistry. Bruno said Evan moved with the grace of a swan and said it was "wonderful." Scores: 8, 7, and 8. Total: 23
Buzz & Ashly: More than four decades after walking on the moon, Buzz took to the "Dancing with the Stars" floor. Ashly Costa returned to the show for the first time since Season 3. At 80 years old, Buzz and his partner were more worried about him remembering their steps than learning them in the first place. Len recalled watching Buzz watch on the moon and how brave he thought Buzz was then and now. But Len said he couldn't give marks for bravery. Bruno said it looked like Buzz still had his moon boots on. Carrie Ann pointed out that Buzz inspired a ton of people with his performance. Scores: 5, 4, and 5. Total: 14.
Nicole & Derek: Nicole said she secretly prayed for Derek to be her partner, and he showed up. They had a lot of fun in rehearsal and Derek helped Nicole get over the fact that not every aspect of the Viennese waltz looked hot. Nicole vowed that after they danced, they'd be known as Sir Derek and Lady Nicole. Bruno jumped out of his chair and called it "a performance of startling finesse" and said he was "astounded." Carrie Ann said "the bar has just been set for Season 10." She said it was emotional and passionate and said she hasn't seen a routine like that out of the gate like that -- ever. Len said it looked nice, but looking beyond the choreography it wasn't great. He ripped apart the footwork and more as the crowd booed. Scores: 9, 7, and 9. Total: 25
Aiden & Edyta: Aiden said he liked taking risks, doing things like jumping out of airplanes. Edyta was blown away by his good looks and practice was more physically demanding than he expected it to be. They danced a steamy cha cha cha. Tom said they were "one gust away from an FCC fine" with Edyta's outfit. Carrie Ann said she liked the gusto, but it was disjointed and "didn't go anywhere" for her. Len said there was a dancer in Aiden, but the routine was full of everything he doesn't like. Bruno said there was nothing going on and said Aiden was "like Kenny Mayne all over again." Scores: 5, 5, and 5. Total: 15
Kate & Tony: Kate said that when she told her kids she was going to do the show, they told her she can't dance. She wanted to prove them wrong. She said that several times each day in practice, she's stopped and wondered what she's done. Tony said he was questioning whether she really wanted to be there. They danced the Viennese waltz. Len said the first dance is like a first date, and Kate's nerves got the best of her. Bruno said it must have been a whole new world for her and she had to learn how to perform. He said "it looked like Tony was pushing a shopping cart around the floor" as he explained that she had to assume a character. Carrie Ann noted that all aspects of the performance were new to Kate, and she enjoyed the vulnerability and honesty in the performance. Scores: 6, 5, and 5. Total: 16.
Pam & Damian: Pam said she did the show for her Auntie Vie, who loves to dance. She was paired with new pro Damian Whitewood and they decided they had a lot to prove. Pam said she had no rhythm and was tone deaf, but loves music. They danced a fiery cha cha cha. Bruno said he could "only think of sex, sex and more sex." Carrie Ann said she had waited the most to see Pam, and she did not disappoint. She said Pam was fully engaged and it was "a little much." Len said the cast had been brilliant. He said that it was "a mess" overall. She went wrong and off time. Scores: 7, 6, and 8. Total: 21.
The dancers return for a second round of performances on Monday night, followed by the first results show.
