“I Am Slave” director Gabriel Range’s “Stardust,” that chronicles the young David Bowie’s first visit to the U.S. in 1971, a trip that inspired the invention of his iconic alter ego Ziggy Stardust, will open the 28th Raindance Film Festival.
Like several other festivals this year, Raindance will be a hybrid version comprised of a strong online presence with some physical events and screenings. The festival’s 50-strong film program will be available online across the U.K. while live events will be confined to London. The films will be free, though financial contributions will be encouraged, 28% of which will be donated to charitable causes.
Range will participate in a physical red carpet event for “Stardust” in London, and in-person activity will also include an out-of-competition gala screening of Akabane Hiroshi’s Japanese film “Twiceborn,” with both events taking place at London’s The May Fair hotel.

Stardust, a film that will depict David Bowie’s 1971 first American visit, sets actor/singer Johnny Flynn to play the legend.
The life of the late rock legend, David Bowie, is to become the dramatic centerpiece of a biopic titled Stardust. Tackling the task of portraying Bowie is Johnny Flynn, a musician who’s already banked quite the resume as an actor.
Stardust will chronicle a critical waypoint in the career of Bowie (born David Robert Jones), set in 1971 during the then-24-year-old's first trip to America. After Bowie made evolutionary leaps from early-1960s teen idol to "Space Oddity" in 1969 to Dylan-esque/Britpop hybrid on album Hunky Dory and a dark transition on The Man Who Sold the World, his first stateside sojourn yielded inspiration for his next creative step. There, he conceived the plan to parlay his onstage androgyny into the persona that we know as Ziggy Stardust,...

The BBC zombie series, In The Flesh, continues in May and we have a look at new footage from the upcoming episodes. While we don’t have a UK release date at this time, it has been confirmed that it will premiere on BBC America on Saturday, May 10th at 10:00pm. For those who are unfamiliar with the series, here’s a brief overview of the first season:
“The series follows zombie teenager Kieren Walker and his reintegration back into both the local community and the heart of his family. After his suicide four years ago, his friends and family thought they’d never see Kieren again. But then, shortly after his funeral, thousands rose from the dead; and after months of re-habilitation and medication, the zombies, now known as Pds (Partially Deceased Syndrome) sufferers, are gradually being returned to their homes. We knew BBC America would be airing Season 2 of "In the Flesh" sometime this year, and now the official premiere date has arrived along with a "first look" teaser video and a few more details of what's coming.
The expanded six-episode new season of "In the Flesh" will debut on Saturday, May 10th, at 10/9c immediately following a new episode of "Orphan Black," only on BBC America.
Synopsis:
"In the Flesh" creator Dominic Mitchell reignites the world of teenager Kieren Walker (Luke Newberry), a Pds (Partially Deceased Syndrome) sufferer who continues in his struggle to find acceptance. The six-parter is a BBC America co-production with BBC Drama Production North.
In the cauldron of Roarton, where the living and the undead have reached a fragile peace, Kieren is desperately keeping his head down and squirreling money into his ‘escape fund’ for Paris. But in the wider world, fear is in the air.

In theaters now is Citadel, the new thriller by writer/director Ciaran Foy. The film tells the story of a young man who becomes inflicted with agoraphobia and must take care of his infant daughter after the brutal murder of his wife by a gang of hoodlums. When he finds out that the attacks occurring in his housing project may not be isolated incidents he seeks the help of a nurse and a deranged priest to put an end to the evil plaguing his neighborhood. The film stars Aneurin Barnard (Hunky Dory, Ironclad), James Cosmo (Braveheart, Trainspotting), and Wunmi Mosaku (Womb, I Am Slave).
I recently had a chance to sit down with Ciaran Foy and talk about his new film, Citadel. He discussed the brutal real-life event that inspired the film, dealing with agoraphobia, the filmmakers that inspired him, and his love for soundtracks.

The Montreal International Black Film Festival will close its 7th edition with I Am Slave, based on the life of Mende Nazer, a 21st century slave.
“We’re proud to close the festival with such an intense film and have its director Gabriel Range with us, here in Montreal”, declared Mibff programming director Émile Castonguay.
I Am Slave, official selection of the 2010 Tiff, is the latest film of Gabriel Range, who directed Death of a President. It was written by Jeremy Brock, who also wrote The Last King of Scotland, for which Forest Whitaker won an Oscar for Best Actor. Gabriel Range wanted to depict Mende Nazer’s dramatic life, “This woman demonstrated exemplary courage. She’s an inspiration to us all. I hope this film will raise awareness and start a debate to stop slavery.”

The Toronto Film Festival starts today and throughout the festival, we'll be providing updates, interviews and reviews, but in scrolling through the massive schedule -- 300-plus films in 11 days -- there's a noticeable case of gender inequality. Yes, following rave reception in Telluride, a new king is expected to be crowned with a stuttering Colin Firth in the British historical dramedy "The King's Speech," while James Franco appears to have capped off a year of ubiquity with Danny Boyle's latest "127 Hours," which recounts the harrowing survival of rock climber Aron Ralston during five excruciating days in which his arm was stuck under a boulder. (On a less serious note, or too serious perhaps, "I'm Still Here" star Joaquin Phoenix and Vincent Gallo, who is in Canada with not one but two new films, should bring as much attention as they do the crazy.)
However, judging by many of this year's most anticipated titles,...

With a title like "I Am Slave," one can reasonably expect neither subtlety or uplift from this true-life drama about the plight of one young Sudanese girl who is taken from her village in and sold into serving a family of Arabs in contemporary England. And for about two-thirds of "I Am Slave" that presumption would seem accurate, as "Last King of Scotland" screenwriter Jeremy Brock has no objection to leaving the caps lock on at times when depicting the particularly brutal treatment that befalls the village princess-turned-urban slave Malia (Wunmi Mosaku). Nor does director Gabriel Range, who last caused a stir in Toronto in 2006 with the premiere of the faux assassination of President Bush drama "Death of a President," have any qualms about pushing buttons.

From the producer of The Last King Of Scotland, Andrea Calderwood, comes I Am Slave, directed by Gabriel Range, whose last film, Death of a President, from 2006, caused quite a bit of controversy thanks to its fictional account of an assassination of then president, George W. Bush.
I Am Slave, said to be inspired by real life events, is a thriller centered on London’s present-day slave trade, and stars Isaach de Bankolé, as a Sudanese father, whose young daughter is captured and sold to a wealthy Arab family, sent to London to work, unseen, trapped, without money, and no passport, behind the gates of their home, as her father desperately searches for her.
It screens at next month’s Toronto International Film Festival. And, while I tend to be weary of films like these, that show what I feel is a limited Pov of Africa and its people (see...
