Supposedly the export title for the English-language dub of PYASA JISM, which confusingly has its own IMDB entry (I'm having trouble confirming or denying if it's the same film given the unavailability of the original), THE GAME OF LOVE is strange either way, a standard A-cert jiggle romp rendered infinitely more bizarre by its Indian-generated English dubbing.

Like many Indian B-thrillers, the plot starts simple before spinning out wildly, with hero Kishan romancing the wealthy Monika Malhotra to gain money for his true love, Manisha. Catching on to Kishan's scheme, Monika exacts revenge in standard thriller fashion, by refusing a divorce and vowing to make his life a living hell. Thankfully, Kishan has a friend, dying of cancer, who is a dead ringer for a convict whom Kishan conspires to trade places in prison with him in order to murder Kishan's wife. Swapping the two, Kishan plans to have the crime to occur while he's in a meeting, providing an airtight alibi. However, events soon conspire to prove that in the GAME OF LOVE, things inevitably end in heartbreak.

What seems from the outset like a fairly simple sexual extortion thriller is quickly done in by its myriad subplots, all crowding for space in the scant 80-minute running time. Weirdly, it takes nearly 20 minutes for the moving to get going, as it kicks off with a lengthy (and largely irrelevant) account of how the prisoner ended up on death row (it was also for murdering *his* wife). Bonus digressions involve a lecherous gardener, the ins and outs of Monika's business dealings at her improbably large corporation, and a couple dance scenes that look like they were literally spliced in from a different movie and have zero bearing on the plot.

Beyond all this, the most bizarre and distinctive element of THE GAME OF LOVE is its English post-sync dub track. I'm really not sure who this track was produced for, as its thick accents and frequent reliance on Indian colloquialisms will make it near-impenetrable for native Anglophones. Perhaps it was produced for Indian audiences, to give the film a more cosmopolitan veneer, but either way it's delirious, with characters earnestly spouting off the kind of gibberish usually reserved for third-rate subtitles. If you've ever wondered what it must be like for audiences regularly saddled with such post-sync dub jobs (still common in some Asian countries, and historically popular in Italy and Japan as well), this provides an excellent example, and it's about as disorienting (and frequently hilarious) as one might expect. For true completists, a subtitled version can be found on YouTube, though it looks to be missing about 10 minutes of footage featuring anything remotely sexual, including the convict meeting his wife at the beginning (after she's nearly raped at a party!) and, presumably, Monika's surprisingly forthright doctor's visit seeking an abortion.
