- The team's latest case takes Brennan back to her alma mater, Burtonsville High School, where she and Booth investigate the discovery of an unidentified skull and upper torso. With Angela's help, they identify the victim as one of Brennan's classmates, and notice a possible connection to a second murder committed 15 years prior. Brennan and Booth go undercover as a married couple at her class reunion to interrogate a set of suspects, where even as an adult, Brennan is still predictably misunderstood and her only friend lies in a strangely dark and offbeat janitor. Meanwhile, Hodgins spills a lab secret.—FOX Publicity
- Two young girls lie down on a blanket and negotiate kissing -- like in that Katy Perry song. Before they kiss, however, a decomposing skull swings into view and smacks one of the ladies in the face, leaving behind maggots. Gross. Booth (David Boreanaz) and Bones (Emily Deschanel) are soon on the scene -- and we learn that the latter grew up in the area. Deputy Conway (Jenica Bergere) compliments Booth on his face and body. She also remembers Bones from high school, calling her the "creepy girl." Inside, Conway explains that a raccoon was eating the insides of the skull when it charged the girls. Outside, Bones finds a torso. "They say a spirit lives in these woods," Conway says. "He takes over a person and makes him kill." The legend of the "Butcher of Burtonsville High" apparently dates back to when Bones attended school.
Specifically, the legend has it that the Butcher barbeques and eats the victim's ribs. A similar dismemberment happened to one of Bones' classmates. Sweets (John Francis Daley) suggests via video feed that B&B go undercover to the upcoming high-school reunion -- to avoid raising a panic. Back at the lab, Hodgins (T.J. Thyne) accidently spills the news to Wendell that Angela (Michaela Conlin) thought she was pregnant. The young intern is shocked his lady pal didn't tell him. He then says he would have taken responsibility. "I'm sorry," Angela says. "I should have told you."
Cut to Bones' old high school, where B&B introduce themselves as husband and wife to former classmates Julie (Megan Hilty) and Brad (Victor Webster). They then go to meet janitor Ray Buxley (Robert Englund), who eats a plate of barbeque ribs. Turns out Bones was good friends with the creepy janitor back in the day. Some people thought Ray killed the girl long ago, but Bones never believed it. She did, however, name a killer in one of her books after the man, who also collects knives. Naturally, Bones doesn't find Ray's hobbies odd at all. Later, Bones gets a call from the lab. The victim had a broken jaw. That rings a bell with Bones, who accidentally broke a girl's jaw in high school with a tennis racket. "This is one of classmates, Evelyn Sims," Bones says of the most recent body. Evelyn, of course, is Brad's wife.
Sweets theorizes that the killer could be a former classmate. And one stands out above the rest: Brad. Not only was Brad dating the girl who was killed back in the 90s, but he was also "married to the most recent victim," Sweets observes. Hmm. Back at the lab, Wendell thinks the killer used a blade to saw the victim's bones. Hodgins says that the saw was probably a tool that cuts through metal, as metallic residue was found. Angela then calls Bones to discuss Wendell's reaction to the non-pregnancy. She says she prefers Hodgins' initial reaction, which was "I'm your guy." Sure enough, Angela is soon breaking up with Wendell -- albeit gently. "You're sexy, smart and good," she tells him. "You have somebody out there who isn't a duty." Wendell says Angela does, too. "I think we know who," he says. Could he possibly mean Hodgins? Yes, he does.
Later, Conway explains that Brad owns a body shop (good place for a metal-cutting saw) that is supposedly losing money. But first, B&B interview Carrie (Suzy Nakamura), a baker who recently had a fight with Evelyn. Apparently, Carrie was with her parents when Evelyn was killed, so she has an alibi. Hodgins and Wendell then call with the news: marks on the victim's bones indicate they were severed with a band saw. B&B head to the wood shop, where they find shop teacher (and former Bones' classmate) Andy (Ben Falcone) carving "Temperance" in wood. He has also carved "Evelyn." It's creepy. Bones then snaps photos of the saw and takes samples of what she determines is bone dust. Evelyn was likely killed in the room.
Upstairs in the gym, the party has begun. Brad, who also had a life-insurance policy out on his wife, soon enters. But B&B are too busy slow dancing to Seal. Bones begins to tear up. "This is the prom I never got to go to," she says. It's a sweet moment ... until Bones notices that the points on the metallic stars floating from the ceiling are the exact angle of the cuts in Evelyn's bones. Bones emails a photo of the star to the team, which quickly determines that the victim was thrown onto a bed of stars, made by a band saw, left on the wood-shop drying rack. "Somebody really hated her," Hodgins says.
Bones then approaches Ray, who fingers Julie as the star maker. "Them smiley ones, they always give me the willies," Ray says. B&B then watch Julie comforting a worried Brad. "It was her Booth," Bones says. "It was Julie!" Cut to Julie being led away in cuffs. She says that she killed Sarah in the 1990s with Evelyn -- because Sarah was sleeping with Brad. Turns out Julie and Evelyn once made a pact to "share" Brad. Evelyn broke the deal when she married the former homecoming king. Thus, Julie killed Evelyn.
