- A park ranger pulls into a wooded area to enjoy a doughnut and coffee in peace. He's interrupted first by a call from his wife and then by gun shots. A man staggers out of the woods holding his gut then collapses to the ground.
In the office, Tony wrings out his sock in his desk drawer. He was texting and walking and hit a puddle. After their usual morning banter, Ziva asks the group if they've noticed something different about Duckie. He's been wearing ties instead of bowties.
Gibbs comes in and calls them out to the dead marine in Rock Creek park. The FBI is also there. A member of the park police tells them they found a key on the victim, who is still in surgery.
He's John Mayne, and according to his service record he went missing in Afghanistan six years ago.
At the hospital, the doctor can't tell Gibbs if Mayne will recover.
Tony talks to Mayne's wife Leah, who thought he was dead. Gibbs ask her to make a visual ID.
Although his head is bandaged and he has a beard, she thinks it's him. They check his birthmark to be sure. She wonders where he's been the last six years. Gibbs puts Tony on waiting-with-the-wife duty. She calls someone.
Back at the office, Ziva tosses Tony's soggy sock into his desk drawer.
She briefs Gibbs. Six years ago Lt. Mayne was park of a three man recon mission in Afghanistan. The other two men were Gordon Holcomb, who's on his way to talk to them, and Matthew Gontz, who they are looking for.
Gibbs visits Abby in the lab, where she's doting on Mortimer, an adorable yellow lab puppy who she is fostering before he's trained as a seeing eye dog.
She reports that the .9 mm gun found at the scene only had Mayne's prints on it and had two shots fired. The doctor said Mayne's wounds weren't self-inflicted and they found bullets from another gun in the park ranger's truck.
Ziva and McGee find Matthew Gontz at a taxi garage. He tells them about the mission where Mayne went missing. They were supposed to place remote sensors but on their way back, Mayne broke his leg. They left him in a building basement while they went to commandeer a vehicle but when they came back, he was gone.
The fact Mayne is alive also appears to be news to Holcomb as he talks to the team at the office. McGee takes note that in telling the story of Mayne's disappearance he uses the same words Gontz did. Gibbs gets a call that Mayne has woken up.
They go to the hospital, where the doctor tells them he's sedated Mayne. A woman named Rachel Wells introduces herself to Gibbs. She says her husband went missing on his run yesterday. She shows them a photo. It's John Mayne, but she knows him as Christian Wells.
Outside, Rachel tells Gibbs about meeting her husband on the track at Georgetown two years ago. They've been married a year. She says he day trades and has a lot of money. She didn't know he was meeting someone in the park yesterday, or that he owned a gun.
In the office, they find that Wells has $12 million in his bank accounts. McGee finds that a PI named Peter Iger has been looking into his financials as well.
At the hospital, the doctor fends off requests from both wives to see their husband.
Duckie picks up papers for a long weekend from Gibbs. He says he's fine.
Tony sneaks in to see John/Christian.
Tony calls him Lt. Mayne and his heart beat spikes. Tony mentions his two wives and the machines go nuts. A nurse comes in to run Tony off. From his bed, John can see both women.
Ziva gets in the PI's car as he sits stakeout. He says a guy had a picture of John crossing a finish line in a marathon and wanted him tracked down. He says he told his client the man was Christian Wells. His client is Major Gordon Holcomb.
In the hospital, John is crashing and the doctors work on him. But they are unable to revive him. He dies.
In the office, they're now focused on Holcomb. And they want to know how Mayne made his money. McGee says it was transferred from an offshore account.
Holcomb is back in the building and they arrange for him to pass Iger the PI in the hall on his way to interrogation. He tells Gibbs about finding the marathon picture of Mayne. But he dropped it when the PI told him it wasn't Mayne.
Duckie looks at leg x-rays and proclaims something amiss. Abby drops by with Mortimer the puppy. Duckie tells her Mayne didn't have a broken leg. She invites him to lunch, but he begs off.
Upstairs, Gibbs deals with a pushy Rachel Wells. She doesn't believe her husband was John Mayne but he tells her they have a DNA match. She's peeved her accounts have been frozen so he explains her husband was leading a fraudulent life. Finally he gives up talking to her and has her escorted out.
Tony reports that around the time Mayne went missing a drug lord claimed some Americans stole millions from them. They bring in Gontz, thinking he's the weak link.
Gibbs tells Gontz that Mayne had millions. Gontz denies knowing how he got it. But then he talks. He says the drug lord's people fired on them so they fired back and took their hide out. They found the cash there. They left Mayne to guard it while they went to look for transport, but he was gone when they came back. He's felt guilty for years, thinking Mayne got captured because they wanted the money.
Ziva follows Holcomb to a townhouse. Mayne's widow (the first one) greets him at the door, then kisses him and welcomes him in.
Later, Ziva shows Leah the pictures in interrogation. She says Gordon visited her after he got back, to console her about John. Then his marriage got rocky three or four years ago and they got together. She admits she called Holcomb from the hospital about John.
They talk to Holcomb, too, who admits what they know. Leah says Holcomb stayed with his wife for the kids. Holcomb says he didn't tell NCIS about knowing John was alive when they talked to him because he was protecting his career.
They claim they were in a hotel the night before he died and neither knew John was alive. McGee confirms their alibis.
It starts pouring rain outside and they talk about car washes. It makes Ziva realize Iger lied to her about being on the same stakeout for three days because his car was freshly washed.
They check his cell phone, which he has constantly in his ear, and find it was turned off the morning of the murder.
They use it to track him. Tony and McGee find his car, but he's not in it. They check with Ziva, who says he's at a nearby restaurant.
But Tony wants to get a look in the car. McGee uses a cell phone app to hack into the car's alarm codes and open the door. He goes through his laptop files and finds Holcomb's account.
Duckie carries flowers in a cemetery. They're for his mother's grave. The dates show she died recently. Abby and Mortimer sneak up on him.
In Iger's files they find that he had discovered Mayne was Wells.
Ziva looks up Iger and finds he owns a .45, the other gun at the scene. Iger comes back to his car and finds Tony and McGee. They ask to see his gun. He runs.
But he doesn't get far.
Gibbs joins them and Iger says it was self-defense, that Mayne came with a gun and shot first. Mayne had millions, Iger says he just wanted $100,000.
Gibbs waits for Duckie in the morgue. He asks why Duckie didn't tell him about his mother's passing. He says he wanted to deal with the personal stuff by himself. He's put her house on the market and gave his mother's dogs to a Corgi lover. He put an offer in on a brownstone with help from a real estate agent named Sophie, whose company he enjoys. She's younger than him. She's the one who doesn't like the bowties.
