When Peggy helps the inebriated Don to the restroom so he can throw up, she pauses for a moment, trying to decide if it's worse for her to go into the men's room, or to take Don into the ladies room. This gag almost didn't make it into the show. In order for it to work, both restroom doors had to be visible in a single shot. This meant that a set would have to be constructed, and the producers were hesitant to spend the money building a new set for a single scene. Ultimately it was decided that the gag was funny enough to warrant the expense.
In an interview with Entertainment Weekly in September 2010 Elisabeth Moss mentions that this is her favorite episode of the show.
The struggle to create a winning TV ad for Samsonite Luggage serves as story backdrop. In her last appearance, Anna's suitcase is a 1960's white Silhouette by Samsonite. (A model then available with yellow linings - which would have matched her dress.)
During a heated exchange in "The Chrysanthemum and the Sword" (S4E5), Roger brings up the name "Dr. Lyle Evans" and Burt responds angrily. Many fans subsequently searched online assuming that "Dr. Lyle Evans" was an historically significant figure. When no references to that name were found, critics figured it was a joke that the show's writers played on the fans. In "Suitcase" (S4E7) however, when Don and Peggy are listening to Roger's tape recorded memoirs, Roger is heard saying that Dr. Lyle Evans is the doctor who botched a surgical procedure that left Burt Cooper castrated.
Jon Hamm and Elisabeth Moss submitted this episode for consideration in their respective acting categories for the Emmys. Matthew Weiner also submitted it for the writing category.
