Mayan civilization arose on the Yucatan peninsula, a difficult region with limited water, poor limited soil and little fertilizer. It was a violent culture of city states that engaged in warfare not just for dominance but to acquire victims for torture and sacrifice in ceremonies. It was already well into decline by the time the Europeans arrived bringing their own form of violence and domination.

The Incan empire stretched the length of South America. It was turbulent short lived kingdom lasting just 100 years before the arrival of the Spanish who, due to a remarkable series of advantages, managed to conquer the empire with just a few hundred men. But Spanish rule tended to be just as turbulent for some time.
