- DCI George Gently and DS John Bacchus investigate the murder of Domenica Paige. The neighbors had heard loud voices earlier in the evening but paid no attention as the young woman frequently had visitors. Someone did see a man, perhaps with a Scottish accent, but there is little else to go on. The woman was separated from her husband Alan Charlton, who also has custody of their only child. They learn from her brother Darren that she has a history of mental illness and had twice been in a mental hospital. They suspect the husband and under tough questioning he confesses all. Four months later, a young lad disappears from a camp site they find a connection not only with a young girl who fell a cliff the year before but possibly to Domenica's death as well. Even Gently is taken somewhat aback when the truth finally emerges.—garykmcd
