In October 2002, Chechen separatists seized Dubrovka, a Moscow theater, and took hostages to protest atrocities in their homeland and demanded an end to the war in the region. A tactical unit of Russia's Ministry of Internal Affairs released fentanyl gas into the theater to end the stand-off. All forty of the insurgents were killed, and up to 130 hostages died during the siege.
