Bobby is insulted to be discarded as potential guardian for Andy's baby since his divorce, as he was just part of package 'team Jules', but plays a mighty trump: a mate is principal of an exclusive school.—KGF Vissers
- Jules is determined to connect with her dad -- so much so that she gives in to dressing up for Halloween, his favorite holiday. - TITLES ARE HARD COUGAR TOWN
Jules (Courteney Cox) hates Halloween, especially since her dad is visiting, although being an adult means you can buy your own candy. But she still has to decorate, so she makes a jack-o-lantern that's puking its seeds.
ELLIE: (to Laurie) It looks like you on a Saturday night.
LAURIE: True that.
Jules is already talking folksy, and Laurie (Busy Philipps) gets to throw something at her every time she does it. Grayson (Josh Hopkins) is having a costume party at his bar, and Chick (Ken Jenkins), Jules' father (yes, he's named for a farm animal) can't wait. But he'll comfort himself with some Penny Can in the meantime. Of course, Jules' mother never liked Halloween costumes, and since everybody else loves them (even Laurie's disastrous stint at OctoMom the previous year didn't dissuade her), you can guess Jules has a slight aversion to it. Laurie and Chick pick up Travis (Dan Byrd) from college (and scare him, too). Everybody loves Chick.
JULES: Yeah, when he's with you, he's Captain Superfun...
LAURIE: That could be my costume.
JULES: But when it's just the two of us, he's Mr. Emotionally Distant.
GRAYSON: That could be my costume.
Jules has a plan to let her father work out some hatred on the metrosexual Grayson so she can have some emotional bonding with him later. Only Grayson softened her father up with song. And both of them got kicked in the family Jules. Jules' plan to talk to her father doesn't work, and she chews him out for it. Sure enough, it reminds Chick of how her mother sounded, and Jules isn't having it.
Ellie (Christa Miller) and Andy (Ian Gomez) are trying to get Stan into pre-school, and even Ellie giving the Headmaster a "get some time with the twins" hug only got Stan to tenth on the waiting list. However, the Headmaster plays golf with Stan's former legal guardian...former since the divorce, that is. Ellie and Andy go to do some major kissing up to Bobby, even buying him a case of beer, but he wants to be guardian of Stan again.
Jules discusses her situation with Ellie, Laurie, and Grayson. It's the same thing every year with her father, and Laurie doesn't want to drive to the Keys to get the conch fritters Jules pounds out of guilt every time her father leaves. Jules decides to play it his way and join everybody for the costume party at Grayson's bar. He is going as Prince, so Jules will dress up as a princess just so her dad will talk to her.
At the party, Ellie dresses like Laurie and Laurie dresses like Ellie. And Burt Reynolds (Andy) is so turned on right now. Give Bobby props for an awesome costume: Windy Guy, complete with windblown hair, newspaper wrapped around his face, and damaged umbrella. And Jules shows up as a princess, although you may have noticed that Prince was capitalized in the previous sentence. Yes, Grayson wonders why he and Jules scream at each other; this is what it sounds like when doves cry. But she can tolerate all of it...until her father texts her that he left.
Barb comes dressed as a haystack so she can ask guys if they want a roll in the hay (half-haystack, easy access in the back, natch). Ellie browbeats Bobby about not knowing what to do if she and Andy die and then yells at him for being so petty. Only Bobby got Stan into the pre-school the minute they asked him, since he'd do anything for Stan, no matter how much Ellie was acting like a power tool. Ellie apologizes with a couple of beers and promises him he is Stan's guardian should anything happen to her, Andy, or Jules.
BOBBY: You're never riding in the same car with them ever again, are you.
Laurie continues to scare Travis at the most inopportune times because Travis is acting too cool for Halloween, despite the fact he's at home by himself looking through old Halloween photos (including one of him and Bobby as Hall & Oates). Laurie is upset because she had seen that from her friends who went to college and doesn't want Travis to do the same thing. Travis finally breaks down and joins the party dressed as Andy.
Jules decides to go home because she's upset Chick found it so hard to be with her. Only Chick had been at the party all night dressed up as an obnoxious bear. He finds Jules outside and gives the "you need a hug" gesture he always gave her as a kid, and she takes the hug she wanted. They talk alone, and Chick confesses Jules looks so much like his wife when she was young, it's too hard for him. Jules confesses she's afraid of being alone without a family, but Chick points out she made a family with the gang.
