- Things become awkward at Thanksgiving when Grayson doesn't return Jules' "I love you," Ellie and Laurie conspire to kill Andy's optimism, and Bobby changes his speech pattern because nobody knows what he's saying.
- While preparing their first Thanksgiving together, Grayson fails to convince Jules hugging everybody is over-demonstrative. She stresses over his inability to return an 'I love you', he over bumping into his ex, whom he wants to show he now has a full life. Bobby is insulted when the girls point out nobody understands his mumbling. The boys try to assure him they still get the zest. Travis's equally unintelligible room-mate Kevin convinces him their acceptance is priceless. Andy's optimism proves unshakable by chance, which always turns, or even evil intent from jealous wife and Laurie, who hide his wedding ring.—KGF Vissers
- Jules says "I love you" to Grayson for the first time. But when Grayson doesn't reciprocate with the words she wants to hear, she's determined to host a "romantic" Thanksgiving in order force the moment on of him. Meanwhile, Ellie and Laurie team up to knock the optimism out of Andy, and Bobby is upset when the gang confesses that sometimes they can't understand what he's saying.—ABC Publicity
- REGRETFULLY, WE GIVE YOU - COUGAR TOWN
Grayson (Josh Hopkins) makes a mistake he never should: he criticizes Jules' (Courteney Cox) hugs. To some extent, he's correct, as she hugs grocery boys and Travis' (Dan Byrd) roommate, Kevin ("It's like hugging a sofa!") In reality, not a lot of guys would be upset being hugged by Courteney Cox, but what the hell. Jules is excited it's the first Thanksgiving she's hosting with Grayson, and she even got Grayson a thank you from Kevin. The good news for Grayson is helping Jules with the dinner means sex afterwards. The bad news is, he has to go shopping and run into his ex-wife, Vivian. (Yes, Jules hugs her.) Grayson follows Vivian out of the store, and Jules follows. He did that because she showed up last winter with her new guy and impending child, and he wanted to get his payback with the woman he's been the happiest with in his life.
JULES: Oh, Grayson. I love you.
GRAYSON: Jules...thank you.
(OK, the non-returned "I love you" is cliched enough, but did you have to rip the thing off of Courteney's old show? SERIOUSLY?!?!?)
Ellie (Christa Miller), Andy (Ian Gomez), and Laurie (Busy Philipps) gather for lunch, and apparently, Laurie can't live without her smartphone. (Too easy sometimes, right?) She has every app imaginable on it, including ones to let you know when someone is executed and an App app, where Zach Braff tells you what appetizer to order as if he was on South Park (1997). Andy got his cell phone stolen, but he's confident he'll get it back, as he is the world's biggest optimist. It even ticks Ellie off. But sure enough, not only does Andy get his phone back, he gets a quickie scalp massage from the person who returned it.
LAURIE: I'm going to be the optimism out of that man. And I know he's your husband, but...
ELLIE: Laurie, I'm in!
Their idea is to lose Andy's wedding band. Jules' idea for making it work with Grayson is to have an incredibly romantic dinner. On Thanksgiving. And only she thinks she can pull it off. But she does insist on everybody dressing nice, which everybody does...except Ellie. (Laurie is going to try to break Katy Perry's 12-outfit record at the MTV VMA's, and she's off to a good start.) Jules puts on the Teddy Pendergrass and Grayson doesn't mind that. As everybody else tries to figure out what Bobby(Brian Van Holt) is saying, Jules tries to put the moves on Grayson in the kitchen, and she insist Kevin turn around on his spot on the couch and not text about it. Grayson finally clues himself in to what Jules said to him in the store yesterday and is ready to tell Jules, "I..."
JULES: Oh, my God! Is that your stomach?
Grayson is allergic to the oyster stuffing. It's that bad. Jules tries to be supportive and stay with Grayson as she throws up, but the sound of it makes her throw up. (And now they're stealing from Sex and the City. Come on!)
Andy keeps looking for the wedding rings, but he won't be saddened, mainly because the "2 Legit 2 Quit" inscription on them could use some updating. (It was Ellie's idea.) They give up, and Ellie tells Laurie to give Andy the ring back. But that was four outfits ago. And even confessing STILL WON'T get Andy upset.
ELLIE: Do you have an app that tells you how to kill your husband without getting caught?
LAURIE: I do! I just have to find it.
Andy's crazy optimism even annoys Jules, who wants to go over to Grayson's and ask if he loves her, despite being ridiculously ill. Andy tries to stop her from going over there and making a fool of herself. She doesn't go, and Andy finds his wedding band.
Bobby goes out of his way to talk correctly, and it creeps everybody out. They want him to go back to his old way of not making any sense. Bobby is upset, but Kevin points out to Bobby that people don't care how he talks, and Kevin wished his old friends would have stayed friends. Travis doesn't judge him, and Bobby should be happy people don't judge him for the way he talks, either. It works great for a new post-dinner game: guess what Bobby and Kevin are saying!
They settle down to dinner, and Laurie didn't have enough boob tape to make it all the way to twelve outfits. But the ninth one is elegant. Everybody holds hands, including the very ill Grayson. He tells Jules he's lucky to have found her and admits he isn't good at expressing himself as she is. She tells him to take all the time he needs. (Not too much, of course.)
