Melinda's decision to tell Aiden that ghosts aren't real comes at the price of her not being able to distinguish between the energies of ghosts and people, making her not the easy-to-live-with person all knew her to be. As she fiercely ignores Carl (believing him to be under the influence of Shadows), Carl turns to Eli (who can't to speak past a bad tooth). As the ghosts of marching children, lead by a sarcastic 13-year-old prankster, invade Jim's hospital, Melinda falls under Shadow influence. Carl must get Aiden to declare war.
