Opening on Friday, May 4th, is The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel, John Madden’s outstanding film starring Judi Dench, Maggie Smith, Bill Nighy, Tom Wilkinson, Celia Imrie, Penelope Winton, Ronald Pickup, Dev Patel and Tena Desae. The film revolves around a group of English pensioners who abandon their homeland when enticed by advertisements of ‘The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel’, a seemingly luxurious sanctuary for “the elderly and beautiful” in Jaipur, India. On arrival they discover that the hotel falls somewhat short of the romantic idyll but they are gradually won over by the ever-optimistic young entrepreneurial manager, Sonny (Dev Patel). One of the best things about The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel, besides of course the incredible cast, is the story and the way it follows both the retirees’ stories and those of the Indian people they meet. The movie illuminates the clashes of the tradition and the modern in India regarding work,...

Actor-filmmaker Parvin Dabbas is content with the response to his directorial debut 'Sahi Dhandhe Galat Bande', and is glad that his 'small film with a big message' has appealed to the masses.
A tale of a group of four notorious men finding their conscience and working for a big cause, the film features Vansh Bharadwaj, Ashish Nayyar, Kuldip Ruhil and Parvin.
Parvin, who produced the movie under his banner Very Fishy Films, is happy that the movie has come at a time when corruption and empowerment are hot issues in the country.
'There are a lot of pressing issues because of which some audience members might not have.

Parvin Dabas’s debut as writer-director Sahi Dhandhe Galat Bande was a stirring tale of a group of galat bandes finding their conscience and working for a big cause. Coming at a time that so many people in the country were engaging in a cause bigger than their individual selves, it was no surprise that the message of the movie resonated with the public. “Ours was a small film with a big message,” said Dabas. “The total budget including print and publi ...

Ekdum sahi hai, boss! As Anna Hazare – God bless his revolutionary soul – shifts from Tihar to Ramlila Maidan, our cinema has made a far more gradual movement from the ‘arty-unintelligible’ grammar of Mani Kaul to the ‘arty-accessible’ language of Parvin Dabas’ film.
This is the land of Shyam Benegal’s social inequalities where politicians pitch their self-interest higher than the good of the country.
Not every do-gooder is a Hazare. Sometime you just have to make do with a benign goon like Rajbir (Parvin Dabas) who breaks legs (shot on mobile phone) and extorts money for his surrogate-father (Sharat Saxena, in his usual excellent form). When Ranbir and his three socially-questionable friends set their hearts on saving their village farmers’ land from urban land-sharks you know this is the land of Sholay brought into the political consciousness...

Sahi Dhandhe Galat Bande has all the ingredients of an action film: exciting chase sequences, punchy dialogues and an edgy style of filmmaking. But in a time when every other film claims to be edgy and gritty, what sets this film apart is that it claims a territory rather unexplored in contemporary Indian films which suffer from a distasteful homogenization of cultures and characters. Parvin Dabas in his directorial debut has created a desi action film, mildly funny and replete with the rawness and a feel of the milieu he comes from; a Jat family in Kanjhawala town of Delhi.
His familiarity with the settings shows in every bit of the film. The four key characters of the film form a local gang and dream of making big money through small-time extortions and mercenary activities. Doctor (Ashish Nayyar...

It has been a harrowing week for Parvin Dabas who had to run from pillar-to-post to get a censor clearance for his film. Hours before release, the new producer-director and not-so-old actor was apparently asked to delete all references to a particular politician and the politician's political ideology. Parvin panicked. Says a friend of the actor-turned filmmaker, "The prints were ready to be dispatched across the world. Only the censor certificate was awaited. But until Wednesday there was no sign of the censor clearance. Parvin was in a state of suppressed hysteria.' Till Wednesday afternoon, Parvin was on tenterhooks waiting for a signature on the censor certificate for his film, afraid to open his mouth about the delay in case it caused further delay. Dabas finally exhaled when that elusive signature on the censor certificate was obtained on Wednesday afternoon. Until then all the prints of his debut film were frozen in their tracks,...

He’s on a cinematic crest of happiness and with good reason.Parvin Dabas has earned high Brownie points from Karan Johar, no less! Parvin Dabas was having several screenings for his directorial debut Sahi Dhandhe Galat Bande in order to gauge the feedback to his directorial debut.
Reportedly, Karan Johar managed to catch one of the film’s screenings … watched it and was floored completely. Karan Johar’s take was that it had all the potential to become a big blockbuster if a big male star acted in it.
However, Parvin Dabas could unfortunately not go ahead with those plans that Karan Johar had in mind as the film has a strong message about an issue that currently has a lot of relevance in the country and has had for a while now, but if delayed could lose its topical nature.
If that wasn’t enough, there was a...
