Khonani being promised the late-night janitor shift five years earlier, with Subhas refusing to step down, is based on Conan O'Brien and Jay Leno amid NBC's controversial handling of the "Tonight Show" hosting duties, which led to O'Brien's departure as host in 2010. "Khonani" aired exactly three months after the last episode of The Tonight Show with Conan O'Brien (2009).
Subhas the janitor is played by Subhas Ramsaywack, who is actually on the maintenance staff of Silvercup Studios where 30 Rock is filmed. He is shown wearing his everyday work uniform, not from wardrobe. He continues to work on staff at Silvercup.
Khonani's line that he had a job waiting for him at "Fox *cough*... Foxwoods Casino" was based on the assumption that Conan O'Brien would be offered a job hosting a late-night show on Fox after he left NBC. Instead, Conan left network television for TBS, where he launched a new show, Conan (2010).
