Out of Character?

I came across this show long after it had ended, though I was aware of it. Now I am addicted to it! If there's one thing that stands out with Castle that I can't say for any other show in recent memory, aside from perhaps one, is that I like all of the regular characters. They all have good chemistry and seem like they are enjoying working together. I know that changes by the last season, particularly behind the scenes, however A Deadly Game (ADG) is the furthest I've got as of this writing, and I'm enjoying the 'courtship phase' of this new fan.

Having said all that, the ending of season 2 seemed to conclude in a very contrived manner, which inspired me to write a review. The episode overall is actually quite good; between the homicide case, Rick's writing deadline, and planning of a summer holiday all made for an engaging 45 minutes. However, ADG marks the end of Kate's relationship with whats-his-name, and she does it to be with Castle... who gets back with his ex-wife at the end. Um, what?

I am all too familiar with this type of pseudo-drama writing trope, there's just simply no way Castle would choose to spend the summer with his ex. Also, when did she become his publisher? She wasn't a publisher before; if I remember correctly she was either an actress or part of a production company. If true, she had to have been shoehorned into this role only to create the situation the season ends with. There's some contradictory dialog as well with Rick telling Kate it's their last case together, even giving him a going-away party, then to say "see you in the fall"? Perhaps production fell behind schedule and there wasn't time for more thorough editing, but it seemed out of character for Castle, and not up to the show's usual writing standard.

Regardless, this is a great show and I am enjoying the hell out of it. If you enjoy murder mysteries/police procedurals, but with a twist, then I'd say give Castle a try!
