Not all is as it seems however and it's all part of Anna's plan to discredit the fifth column. There's more to the live aboard program that meets the eye. Chad is still carrying on his facade of concern about the Vs and sympathy for the fifth columnists. Father Jack lets something slip but he has a crisis of faith when he thinks they have taken innocent lives. Erica discovers something interesting about the remains in the wreckage. 6:00 p.m.
A V shuttle is arriving in the woods. Hobbes shoots it down with a a surface-to-air missile. Jack, Ryan, and Hobbes run to the wreckage and discover it had human beings on it.
Erica looks at bloody crime scene photo at the FBI headquarters. Everyone's phones start ringing. Ryan calls Erica and tells her there are no survivors. They flee the scene.
On the mothership Marcus informs Anna the shuttle was successfully shot down as she expected. They planned it as a frame up job of the Fifth Column.
Twelve Hours Earlier
Ryan investigates his trashed apartment. Joshua calls and tells him Anna is sending a V shuttle filled with trackers to find Fifth Column. Ryan says they'll shoot it down. Joshua says they need V technology to do that and he will supply it but they need to move fast.
Erica walks in on Father Jack working out on a heavy bag and jokes he's dropping his right. He asks if she can do better. She can and does. Hobbes enters and says it's like "The Thorn Birds" up in here. They chat about favorite boxers. Hers is Sugar Ray Leonard. Ryan enters and explains about the V tracker shuttle. He says the trackers are like soldiers with super senses but they can blend better. He explains about blowing up the shuttle. Erica is concerned. So is Hobbes but more from a PR standpoint, since it will make them seem like terrorists. Ryan thinks Anna will keep it from the press to contain the damage since Joshua swore no people would be on it. He says they have to shoot it down in order to preseve their anonymity. Erica gives the go ahead.
Chad returns to visit Father Jack at St. Josephine's. He says he knows in his gut it's not safe for humans to be so trusting of the V's with regards to the live aboard program. He says he wants to join the fight with the Fifth Column. Jack says he hasn't heard anything. Chad says that's too bad since he has an all-access pass to the mothership, Anna, and the V-only shuttles. He says he could be a big asset to the FC. Father Jack tells him to stay away from the V-only shuttles today.
Lisa happens upon a young mother with her baby crying over a nightmare from the night before. Lisa asks her what's wrong. The girl says in the dream she was taken by doctors and poked by hundreds of needles. She says she knows it was a dream but it felt real. Lisa comforts her. (Anna watches this on video).
Chad approaches and Anna thanks him for his report on the live-aboard program. He tells her there are whispers of a threat to the V-only shuttles. She tells him he's come a long way since they met. She asks who his source is. He says that's not how it works, he has to protect his sources. She understands but says there are no V-only shuttles today. Marcus enters, Chad leaves. She tells him they haven't tamped down on all of the Fifth Column on the ship since word of the trackers got out. Marcus says he'll investigate and wonders if they should still send the trackers. She says she has a better idea: if the humans want to blow up a shuttle, they'll let them.
4:45 p.m.
The gang assembles and Hobbes says he got the V code. Father Jack is worried about doing this. The other say they have to.
We fast forward to the moment of the shuttle destruction and the call to Erica.
Erica freaks and calls Tyler, praying he'll answer. He does. She explains about the V shuttle. Tyler flips on the news and he's now freaking that Lisa might be on the shuttle. She tries to reassure him. He says she might be wrong about who was on the shuttle. Boy was she.
Various law enforcement teams investigate the scene. Erica walks through in a daze.
Back in the basement headquarters they try to figure out how it happened. Ryan doesn't know and says Joshua is trying to figure it out. Father Jack is especially upset saying they either value life or they are just like V's. He asks Erica where she is with it. With him, she says. Hobbes says they have bigger problems now since they might not have made a clean getaway. Father Jacks says he's out and stalks off. Hobbes talks about his favorite boxer, someone who was knocked down a lot but always got up. He asks if they want to be the guy who gets knocked down or the one who gets back up.
Tyler arrives at the ship and asks Anna if Lisa is okay. She is. Anna is impressed with is commitment to Lisa. Tyler says he'll do the live-aboard program. Anna says Lisa will be pleased and tells him to go home and pack so he can return and be with Lisa all the time.
Erica's boss Kendrick asks where she was when she returns. She explains about Tyler. He says he wants her on it especially since it seems Fifth Column-y. Malick has a tire tread and some forensice evidence and they have toll booth security footage they can comb through.
Erica goes to work and calls Ryan about the toll booth. He says they did drive through one. She gives him the info and tells him to wipe the toll booth video footage. As she looks at other evidence on her monitor she realizes that the bodies found at the scene were people who were already dead. They didn't kill anyone after all. The Vs filled the shuttle with dead humans. He asks if she has evidence and she says she's looking at it. But as she says this the file disappears saying it has been permanently deleted. Ryan wonders who would do that and Erica checks and it was Kendrick who she sees putting on his coat and saying he's headed out to work on the toll booth footage. Erica tells Ryan to get moving now.
In a race against time Ryan and Hobbes manage to destroy the footage on servers at a security facility just as Kendrick arrives.
Chad goes to visit Father Jack. He asks about him protecting him by telling him about the shuttles. Jack says he was just passing on a rumor. Chad says he has to report on this attack to keep his position intact and be an assest to the resistance. He says he has to come down on hard so if Jack is Fifth Column things are about to get very hard. Jack says it's a good thing he's not FC. Chad says the FC caught Anna off guard. Jack can't believe he asked her about it. He says he did it indirectly.
Anna is recording several takes of a message talking about Vs valuing life. She tells Marcus she's pleased that the FC will now be considered terrorists just as she planned. Lisa enters. She asks which take is better. Marcus says they both seem sufficient. Lisa says the second one seems more sincere. Anna notes her grasp of human emotion seems pretty good. Lisa thanks her and leaves.
The older priest comes and asks Jack if he's okay. He says his faith in himself has been shaken. The older priest tells him to get back to his core values. Jack says he's made terrible choices. The elder priest thinks he means the war. Jack says he doesn't. If it's a matter of law maybe he needs to make a different kind of confession the priest says.
Ryan calls Erica and says the footage wipe was a success. She hangs up as Kendrick walks up.He says he had luck. Even though there was a footage wipe they figured the terrorists had done a dry run earlier in the day and grabbed that footage and got a suspect. Kendrick leads her to interrogation and says it's not your typical terrorist. He opens the door and Father Jack is sitting there looking guilty.
Kendrick interrogates Jack about the tire tread and video. He says he can read the guilt in Jack's eyes and is giving him the chance to unburden himself. Jack is about to say something when Erica pounds the table and demands that Jack answer him. She asks Kendrick to bring in some crime scene stuff. When he leaves she quickly fills Jack in on the V set up and tells him to look scared. Kendrick and Alex return with a picture of the tire tread. Jack gets all huffy and says there are thousands of vehicles in the church fleet with those tires and he was on a public parkway visiting a parishioner whom he was counseling about her adultery. He hopes that they have more to go on in such a high profile case then tire treads and toll booths. He tells them to charge him or let him go. Erica gives him a sly smile. Kendrick tells Alex to cut him loose.
Lisa enters a door with some odd writing on it and sees the corridors and doctors described by the pregnant woman earlier and sees a woman placed on a table and with hundreds of needles poking in to her as doctors look on. She says the faces of others this was done to.
Later she goes to visit Tyler. She tells him she doesn't want him to move on to the ship with me. She says he's a nice guy but she doesn't feel about him like he does about her. He gets mad and says that's not true. She says her mother likes him and she didn't want to disappoint her. He asks about what they shared on the shuttle, what that was about. She says she just wanted to see what "it" was like. He tells her to go. (Obviously, she's protecting him. She's not wearing her V jacket.)
Anna gives her press conference talking about how they value life. She mourns over the shuttle attack and the lives lost. She says their biggest flaw may be that they're too trusting. She demonizes FC for demonizing them for being different. Kendrick watches and tells Malick to get on the ship and reassure Anna the FBI is doing all it can. Anna continues at the conference saying the V's are considering leaving since humans are getting caught in the crossfire. She says they are always of peace and seems on the verge of tears. As she turns she gives a sly smile to Marcus.
Erica goes back to look at the computer log of the file being deleted. Kendrick calls her in to the war room to talk FC. He says he's not letting anyone or anything else harm the Visitors and he's starting a task force to investigate FC. He wants her to head it up and no expense or resource will be spared and she'll be partnering with Malick.
Malick goes to the mothership to talk to Marcus. She gets Anna instead. It turns out that she's a V and she's the one who delted the damning photos using Kendrick's passcode. Malick tells her about the task force and that she's now ready to serve their people and track down FC with the full weight of the U.S. government at her disposal.
Ryan, Hobbes, and Erica watch a Chad report about sympathy for the V's and talk about sticking together. Jack arrives and explains about warning Chad and says he could be an ally and that he's been careful. Hobbes is mad that Jack brought all of this on and them and says they can't trust anyone. They talk about the value of life and not stooping to actual terrorism. Hobbes says they can call it what they want but it's what they are now. Erica says they're the only ones willing to do it. Hobbes welcomes Jack back.
Erica arrives home and Tyler apologizes about going behind her back. He admits Lisa was just using him and he's really upset. She consoles him.
Marcus tells Anna world leaders have been calling offering condolences, to help find FC since they're afraid the Visitors will leave. Anna is pleased and plans to use their fear against them. Lisa comes and tells Anna she failed in getting Tyler to live aboard. She says she pushed too hard and pushed him away and that his mother's pull was too strong. Anna says she understands and that they'll need to find a better incentive for bring Tyler in. She then punches Lisa in the face. She says she will tell Tyler she was injured in a FC attack and that there's no greater incentive for a man than a damsel in distress. She turns to a doctor and tells him to break her legs. Lisa doesn't look happy.
