- The Professor: [to his student] I don't know who is the more obtuse, you who see questions when there are only answers to be seen, or me who seeks an answer when there might not even be a question.
- The Professor: I think, with the exception of needle point, I possess all of the accomplishments of a well-breed young woman educated at the end of the 19th century.
- [chuckles]
- The Professor: Are you musical?
- The Thief: I had a harmonica once.
- The Thief: There are two kinds of people. I decide to side with those who are prepared for everything.
- The Thief: Don't you know how extraordinary you are? Look at yourself. There's so much to see. The older we get, the more precious we are. And that's what you've missed. You haven't understood that.
- Vivienne: [to the Thief] I've met guys like you before, you know? You're always trouble. Sadness follows you where ever you go. It's not that women like me don't know that. It's just that we're attracted to it all the same. I've never met a good girl but she didn't have a bit of badness in her somewhere.
- The Thief: [to his barber] Hey, my life's been a prison, and I'm gettin' out now. And that's what I want to look like. Like I'm comin' out of prison.
- The Thief: You don't lock it?
- The Professor: No, why, do you think that's unwise? Nothing ever happens in a small town like this.
- The Professor: I've always thought I'd like to take to hard liquor. There's something poetic about drinking to excess.
