E. Hughes had no intentions of writing a script for 2020 AD since it was originally a test project. Confused, the actors involved with the project insisted on working from a script, prompting her to write 45 pages, which she completed in two hours. Hughes never officially wrote a complete script for the feature, choosing to send impromptu lines as needed to the cast when the story and animation exceeded 45 minutes resulting in a 1 hour and 14 minute long feature.
All but five of the actors involved in the project recorded voice over at the same location. The rest of the actors recorded in different locations across the U.S. and outside of the U.S. resulting in additional sound editing due to the differences in recording equipment used to record their lines. Some voice over and lines were scrapped altogether.
