100 Years of Horror: Witches (1996)
*** 1/2 (out of 4)
This episode in the horror series has a lot less interviews but more film clips and of course Christopher Lee's narration. The film tracks the history of witches in film but also branches out to Satan worshiping and other forms of cults. We get clips from a wide range of films including MARK OF THE DEVIL, WEIRD WOMAN, THE CITY OF THE DEAD, WITCHFINDER GENERAL, CRY OF THE BANSHEE, THE WICKER MAN and even Dreyer's THE PASSION OF JOAN OF ARC.
The title of this episode really doesn't cover everything that's talked about but that's quite okay. Those unfamiliar with these films are going to be treated to some great clips and they'll have plenty of worthy titles to check out after the movie. Roger Corman talks about THE UNDEAD and his original ideas for it. We have Vincent Price going over the making of WITCHFINDER GENERAL and Fred Olen Ray gets a few words in about a couple films including Lon Chaney, Jr.'s WITCHCRAFT.a Lee himself shares a few memories of the making of THE WICKER MAN and yet the documentary overlooks his Jess Franco movie THE BLOODY JUDGE.
