Not What Was Expected

JERRY ON THE JOB was a very forward-looking comic strip for its era, full of what today would be called surrealistic humor, only a step behind Herriman's KRAZY KAT that would, in animation, lead to the regularized insanity of Bob Clampett and the Cartoon Laws of the Universe.

But this is, despite some playing with perspective -- notice when the group runs up to the house near the end -- a fairly limited and one-joke cartoon, suitable for the split-reel job it is. Despite the popularity of the comic strip it was based on, it never really advanced much beyond its newspaper strip roots. But for the year 1920, it is pretty good and a good piece in the history of animation, before Gregory LaCava and Charley Bowers began to hit their strides.

A False Alarm was another Jerry on the Job cartoon that I watched on YouTube and liked very much

This is another Jerry on the Job cartoon I just watched on YouTube. In this one, his boss sees some kind of commotion from far away though it's only viewable from above a fence blocking the rest of it. So he and Jerry get a sheriff who when they arrive at the fence suggests a constable who then suggests a cop. In between all those encounters, we see them all take the long walks to various places of which one of those-up a hanging bridge-provides some good humor when they fall down on it a couple of times. When all of the above all gather together, they walk another long distance to the other side of the fence...I'll stop there and just say what they discover would probably have been even funnier if this was made during the early sound era. So on that note, I recommend A False Alarm if you're interested, like I am, in these vintage cartoons.
