Nice

I liked the short movie very much ! I liked the idea of "dark" and it seemed like a very good idea to bring the fantasy in the every day life like Baracka and reptile being humans. But what i didn't like is some characters not being preserved to their physical aspect. I mean what the hell was Baraka doing with dreads it looked more like Kabal rather then Baraka. Michael Jay White as Jax seems perfect for the role but i wish they don't rush into this movie because it would be a pity to ruin such a great idea as Mortal Kombat.Nowdays movies are based more on the special effects then on the story line and acting performances. Maybe someone will read our reviews and take them to consideration.

Moooortal Kombaaaaaaaat???
Mash-the-stampede17 June 2010
Warning: Spoilers
A some-what original spin on the "Mortal Kombat" mythos. This "teaser" is more grounded in reality than the video game and previous films. Which is good in some ways but also not so good in others. For example (spoiler alert); the characters of 'Reptile' and 'Baraka' are no longer strange mutants from 'Outworld' but psychotic humans who engineer their own deformities i.e. piercing the face and attaching blades to the arms....which is cool and different, yes - but it's not as cool as the whole "outworld" mythology of a whole other race of humanoid/mutant types. Shang Tsung is no longer an evil sorcerer but an evil mob boss??? Um....no!

The whole "grounded in reality" pitch is interesting at best but it just does not work for Mortal Kombat which is supposed to be as far away from reality as possible! Punching people across a room whilst they spew litres upon litres of blood only to get up and retaliate by punching the opponent's head clean-off is common Mortal Kombat fodder, as is shooting ice/lightning/crazy spears from your hands, shooting lasers from your eyes, knocking people from one arena to another, turning opponent's into babies and performing gory and over-the-top finishing moves known as Fatalities! Realism out the window and all the better for it!!! Call me a purist or whatever you want but that's what made Mortal kombat so great and original in the first place.

That's not to say that this 'teaser' trailer/short film isn't any good. It's shot surprisingly well and has a pretty good cast including Michael Jai White as 'Jax'!!! Obviously a bit of money was spent and it is very polished in it's appearance. The action sequences are good but not amazing and it's definitely nothing we've never seen before! It works fine as a stand alone feature but I personally hope the next Mortal Kombat film isn't like this one. Cast Michael Jai White by all means but add some fantasy back into it.

All up it is still worth a watch especially if you're a fan of Mortal Kombat and let's face it....it could have been worse....it could have been "Mortal Kombat: Annihilation"!!!

Masterpiece.Mortal Kombat as it should been from start
shagratt17 June 2010
At first I thought I was viewing a trailer of a new Mortal Kombat movie. I can't believe the quality of this short film. It's atmosphere is so dark and tense that remind me of a horror movie. I hope they ask this director for the next Mortal Kombat movie. The characters are excellent and they don't have super unnatural powers. They are real twisted people. A thriller background can be feel all around the film and puts Mortal Kombat franchise on another level. This is not for kids but hardcore fans of the first game are now grown up (at least 25 years old) so that's not a problem.

This is the closest to reality that Mortal Kombat can get.

WoW WoW WoW !

Warning: Spoilers
This is the style of Saw meeting the action of any good martial Arts film, no cheesy one liners gr8 cast for a short.

R-rated how the Mortal kombat's should have been from the start.

Characters based on madness and high power influence not supernatural and other dimensions crap, in a modern day city that is over run by crime and most likely corruption.

Even though only being a short i can picture in my mind so much more from this film. Any film company to see this short, and not turn it into a feature length movie which would almost certainly make it's money back and more, are stupid in my eye's. A good video game turn movie is hard to come by now a days this movie could bring life to an old franchise and breathe new life into old characters and bring new hope for all the fans who want to see a decent MK movie.

Here's hoping for a new MORTAL KOMBAT tournament FIGHT ! FATALITY !

Did you naysayers actually watch the clip??
ws_wilsonhire16 February 2011
Yes there are realistic elements here, but most negative comments mentioned are purely assumption. There wasn't anything said about no super natural elements being added at all, nor is Shang Tsung said to be some Mob Boss. Ever considered that an Earth Realm cover? Of course you haven't. The additions of realistic elements makes the concept so much more intense, more relatable, and likely the fantasy elements is what contributing to making the former movies so lame.

This is an amazing concept (and considering it's less than 10 minutes, there isn't much too assume here), that makes Mortal Kombat in any film form return to it's gory, intense roots. Whatever they need to do to actually make a crazy, violent MK, is fine by me. I cannot wait for the Web Series to come out, then when that hits it off, somebody get's the balls to actually make a kick ass movie from this (or maybe a Starz or HBO series similar to Sparticus, minus the lame Roman stuff).

OH and by the way for you slow people, I guess you didn't notice that "Scorpion" had no eyes in this? Most likely not.

Mortal Kombat done right!!!
Crazy-T18 June 2010
Warning: Spoilers
This 8 minute short movie is 10 times better than the two stupid originals combined.

Mortal Kombat brought into the real world. It worked for Batman and it definitely works here. If you haven't seen it yet go to you tube and watch it now! Michael Jai White is the perfect fit for Jax. The characters are more horrifying than they were in the video game. This is the movie I wish I saw when I was 12. Mortal Kombat was built on blood and gore and that is something that both the original movies lacked. In fact I don't remember seeing any blood in either movie. They should've been rated G.

Mortal Kombat Rebirth would be perfect for the die hard fans who grew up playing the video games back in the early 90's.

I hope to God that this is made into a full length movie.

Could be good from afar, but far from good...
dj_hokuto_kenshiro3 July 2010
I think this is what the MK franchise needs to generate some more interest in its direction for live-actions. MK Conquest was good but due to costs it only ran for one season. Interesting cast that's been assembled here (Michael Jai White, Ian Anthony Dale, Matt Mullins, Lateef Crowder), seems more believable than the first. MK Annihilation should just be forgotten about. MK 1 had cheesy SFX as well which didn't really add much to the fantasy aspect of it. And I'm sure the producers of this trailer aren't completely resigned to one direction as far as creative input is concerned. It could turn out that there is some whole underlying "Supernatural Element". What I would like to see and I don't know if anyone else feels the same, but this meets "Big Trouble in Little China". Shang Tsung could be this innocent enough "mob boss" who is actually like Lo Pan, a centuries old sorcerer on a quest to rejuvenate his immortality. This could work, we just have to get on here like we are now, and give these guys more ideas to work with.

This is how you make a fan film, even if its a short
Leidlieder19 June 2018
When I first saw the thumbnail for this on youtube, I was intrigued. Being a fan of this game series since the original, I was very interested in seeing a new live action take on the characters. Not one second of this video disappointed me. I still watch it today. I was already a fan of Michael Jai White and this short only further cemented that, as well as made me a fan of Ian Anthony Dale, though his character's portrayal is so much better in the web series that followed this. Most of the negative reviews for this will be die-hard zealots no doubt, claiming sacrilege for the handling of the source material. I, however, applaud this short film for what it is: a short MK film for fans made by a fan. If you haven't yet, see it.

Mortal Kombat revival
klovetothemax27 June 2010
Warning: Spoilers
This is a really interesting take on Mortal Kombat, shockingly violent (sort of like the first Game was when it was released) and dark. I'll admit that the person who showed this to me led me to believe that it was a preview for a film... and I am glad that it isn't. The short is built around the idea of a dark sinister 'real' MK world, where some of your favorite characters are twisted mass murderers instead of otherworldly villains. While this idea is certainly less blood curdling than another 'MK Annihilation' catastrophe, it still worries me. Those who have played and followed MK from early on are familiar with the quirky over the top antics of the games. The unrealistic melodrama which is, to me, one of the franchises' best selling points. One never has to worry about anything being taken seriously because, lets face it, the MK series is Loony Tunes with martial arts characters and buckets of gore. This new idea take seems to try and completely discard that (with the exception of Jax saying 'finish him') and replace it with a real spin.... that's fine, except that, I'm supposed to believe all the things I'm being told about these people from a foxy detective named 'Sonya Blade.' I don't think there would be anyway to sell a MK film as a 'real world' thriller and not make stomachs churn without totally revamping everything that makes it Mortal Kombat. Don't get me wrong, the short is well made as a piece of film, and the idea is interesting and new, but, as an MK fan, it wouldn't impress me as a film, and i don't think it would impress objective outsiders as a straight thriller.

new film
damien-0-21153313 March 2011
Warning: Spoilers
I may be 17 but I am a big fan of mortal kombat, loved the games and then liked the films, however I must say that you guys need to stop looking at this film as a remake, look at it as a brand new film. The concept is great, having the same old storyline would just be too boring and predictable whereas by bringing in a whole new concept for the film they are able to play with the storyline a lot more. And about the whole fantasy element, I would like to see a slight fantasy element but not as much as in the previous films or the games as that is too much fantasy, but the trailer doesn't mention any fantasy but then again it doesn't mention lack of a fantasy element, you really cant be sure unless someone actually does make a full film out of it. They chose a great actor for the role of jax as he is so bad ass. And as for the other characters I think I would enjoy watching the film and trying to figure out who is who before you are told, it would be interesting to see how the characters came to be. So again look at this as a brand new film, a "rebirth" of the film ;)

I would watch a full feature Warning: Spoilers
This eight-minute short movie is a nice appetizer. We see a cop tell a man about three super-criminals and he wants this man to challenge them at a fighting tournament. Basically, all that happens here is an introduction to the opponents. We don't find out a lot about the cop and same goes for out supposed hero, apart from the fact that he may have a dark and criminal history as well. They made a series based on this, but most of the actors in here did not return for this one, or only for very little screen time. Also the writer of this short film did not return, only the director did. So yeah, I'd probably watch a movie that focuses on the people in this film. Could be decent fun if done right. Even the villains look interesting enough to appear in their own films. But it's already 5 years since this was made, so who knows if it's ever gonna happen. Until then, I recommend watching this short movie.

This is retarded beyond all belief!!
embry2427 June 2010
Warning: Spoilers
I like the fact that it is "dark" and has some reality feel to it BUT this is Mortal Kombat!!!! What the heck was Boon Tobias thinking about? I know he is shitting his pants right now! Reptile,Scorpion and Baraka as humans?! I almost cried when I saw that video. It is far from being MK and they have just destroyed the History of it. I will NOT see this movie when it comes out, just too disappointed!!Wow...Terrible Terrible Terrible. I wish that they would stop putting out video games or cartoons into movies, unless your going to keep it original and put a lot, a lot of effort into it so loyalist would be satisfied!!! DragonBall was terrible, the first Mk was OK, the second was garbage, street fighter was OK but nobody seems to know how to mix reality with fantasy! They could of kept the concept of "Dark" and reality, such as Jax being a PC and Sonya a cop but trying to humanize the other characters is a sin. They should of let the production team of whoever makes the Marvel movies make MK or let Robert Rodriguez and Quentin Tarrantino put there Sin City spin on it; That would of been awesome!

Needs to be a movie!
kodiakbear-4409813 April 2022
This 8 min vid, should be a trailer for an epic Mortal Kombat movie!

This is such a good take on Mortal Kombat and is much darker than the recent MK movie (which i loved)...and reminds me of the Christopher Nolan Batman movies, no comic book looking cinematography.....just something more real/ gritty.

This short NEEDS to become a full movie!

Mortal Kombat: Rebirth

Video game adaptation movies are not always easy but I would definitely say that the writer did a good job in writing the script for this movie and the casting was better than the movies made before this.

Amazing 8 minute piece.
sakurach4n19 August 2018
I wasn't sure what to expect when I first saw this but I have to say that eight minutes later when I was done, I was really impressed. This small piece gathers everything that should be expected from a game adaptation, even if we're speaking about a more somewhat alternative universe. The effects are quite good and the plot is really interesting. It's to bad we don't actually have a bigger movie after this that would follow the plot on this short one.

Warning: Spoilers
Being that this is a short film, I think that this is hands down the coolest MK movie out. The only thing that annoys me is that there is no Lui Kang but I can deal with that. What the people that made this short film did was awesome and I really hope that it gets made into a full length movie. There aren't any supernatural elements in this flick yet and there is no mention of out-world by any means, however, that doesn't mean that they aren't there. Keep in mind this is a short film and there is a possibility that it's going to be made into a full length film, if that happens then I hope they add the supernatural element in there and bring up out-world in someway but I think this film is tits

Not terrible, but not that great
mgwd2 December 2010
Warning: Spoilers
This short is really quite good. The action is really thrilling, the acting is about what I expected and the casting was great, at least for Jax and Scorpion. For those of you that think this short is nothing short of AMAZING, sorry, if you are looking for a cheap action flick that provides action with a severely lacking plot, then there are hundreds of movies like that from modern American cinema. Mortal Kombat has a rich story for most of its characters and to see their stories wasted on another film that goes for action graphics and tries to be more aesthetically pleasing than intellectually stimulating. Also, for those of you that think this short is the worst thing to happen to American cinema...you are most mistaken, that would probably be the remake of Clash of the Titans. Anyways, the dark tone that the short has and the frantic, overwhelming presence of mass murders in a city is something that has made the batman series a huge success. It does lack the supernatural element, which I think is key to the Mortal Kombat universe. If they found a way to keep the supernatural nature of the majority of the "kombatants" intact within the movie, I think it could be a huge success and pleasing to both fans and non-fans. Also, if you notice right at the end Hanzo Hasashi's eyes are...whited? out and he makes the claim that "Hanza Hasashi is dead." This could be hinting at the fact that he is the ninja spectre that we have all come to love. I also think that if non-fans did some research on the characters of MK, they can come to appreciate the supernatural elements, the interplay between Scorpion and Sub-Zero (both), the conflict of Raiden, and all the other rich elements of the MK universe. All in all I think this short lacks in certain key elements that make Mortal Kombat something different than UFC 121, but the direction that it is heading (meaning the dark tone and desperate feel) is right where a Mortal Kombat movie should be.

You're retarded for thinking this was retarded.
mikeyvwj25 October 2010
Everyone who said this was retarded need to get their head out of the nerdy fantasy world of their's. This realistic based MK movie looks bad-ass. If you didn't see, Sub Zero's face was flashed for 1 sec during the video. And he looked bad-ass. Not some idiot walking around with dirty ice tanks... And Scorpion as a top assassin is also bad-ass, Legend of Zelda's Link's Hookshot, but with blood. They even gave Scopion his famous white eyes. So yeah, this movie could be really bad-ass, or bad. So everyone will have to wait and see in the future how the movie will come out. For now you don't need to being saying this was retarded you retard! I'm sure if you directed a movie based on a video game it would totally the best movie ever! So why don't you go and do just that?

Re-imagined, Revamped or Retarted?
sumeet-roop13 May 2011
I remember the original Mortal Kombat video game. Back in the early 90's it was immensely violent and supernatural. It was the first video game where the characters had true to life faces (so when a head was being ripped off it felt real and intensified the violence). These two themes (violence and the supernatural) have been a constant in every video game, movie or TV series with the MK title over the last >20 years.< In fact these two themes are what a lot of people identify MK with. Without them Mortal Kombat loses its identity (Van Dam in Street fighter anyone --i know, i know this one doesn't suck b***s).

Actually Ed Boon and John Tobias the creators of Mortal Kombat weren't involved in these shorts. But if Kevin Tancharoen is successful in his bid to be the next director of MK they will be apparently, so I hope they ad in all the traditional elements.

Good short, Im hoping next they can re-do xmen and instead of bone claws wolverine can have knives stitched to his hands and a bipolar disorder to make it more 'true to life' and 'real' ;)

will this be so great as you believe...
sandman_tz12 September 2010
OK this is my first review first of all i'm a big m.k. fan, have all the games, and when i heard that this is happening i was more than excited.... so this movie looks cool at first when i saw it,but after thinking about it this movie will suck.why you ask 1.this director hasn't any skills in this sort of movies-look him up- 2.this is the real reason why will it suck, hes trying to make this movie to look more realistic and by realistic i mean he will cut the origins of the the characters by trying to make them from ''this''world.as every fan knows there are realms in the game and he wants to skip that and make them from one realm i mean have u heard the reptile ''skin decease'' wtf sub zero cyborg, and i cant wait to hear what will he say about kano, and liu kang if they appear in this movie so think about it and think how this is a bad idea to make it like this i'm sure not so hyped now this is my opinion, and u can agree with it or disagree if u want

This will be an awesome movie.. ignore the MK gamers
mars_615 August 2010
Warning: Spoilers
Like i said ignore the MK gamer fans. They probably hated the original two MK movies too. Hate to be an ass but all games that turn into movies suck (e.g. street fighter also lol) I mean has any fighting game ever had much of a story line. Yes you gamers out there scorpion and the other characters are "human" if they weren't then then MK would be a horror movie. Besides it would be a boring movie if you knew what was happening. Enough said. The trailer looks appealing in a more darker scenes than the original. I do like the little changes I was like the gamer(wtf). But I think it would be interesting to see how this movie turns out.

Flawless Victory
Terryfan22 February 2015
Warning: Spoilers
Being that this a short film and normally I don't always go for short films but this one I'll be glad to make an exception.

Mortal Kombat: Rebirth is mostly a short film that Director Kevin Tancharoen made to get funding for a reboot Mortal Kombat film but in a different style.

Now many fans will be interest to see how they change the stories of these characters that they played as.

The film started with Jackson Briggs (Played by Michael Jai White) going into a interview room with a man in the shadows, an assassin named Hanzo Hasashi aka Scorpion (Played by Ian Anthony Dale) as Briggs explain why Hanzo is in custody of the police.

Sonya Blade (Played by Jeri Ryan) appears to help Hanzo with a offer he couldn't refuse.

Now what makes this film special is the way it is filmed. The film does a great job with using the lighting and settings. It feels like it was inspired by Batman.

The story of the film is interesting as if this would be a good interesting reboot of the films like a origin story.

There is a tense fight scene between Baraka and Johnny Cage, the timing of the fight is very good.

Acting level in this film is very good as well each actor they cast with Jeri Ryan, Ian Anthony Dale and Michael Jai White doing a very well done job as their characters Sonya Blade, Scorpion and Briggs.

Overall if you are curious about this film check it out even Mortal Kombat fans will say it is good enough to make a film a full one.

I give Mortal Kombat: Rebirth an 8 out of 10
