What the Jerry
This is a heavy episode as it details Jerry's sexual crimes against minors. It also shows the reactions/fallout amongst his teammates. The two teen survivors were brave and well-spoken, and I appreciated that the episode didn't just focus on what they'd been through but it also showed them practicing stunts with their friends. They may be the face of change in cheerleading culture, but this isn't the only thing that defines them. They're also just normal boys who are still growing up.
I thought the show did a balanced job of presenting this information. It was interesting because it also presented how it felt like a metaphorical death for Jerry's teammates as they grieve the loss of a friend and question how they didn't see the signs and if they even really knew Jerry at all. The parallels to the culture of gymnastics were also interesting.
The lawyer for the survivors was really black & white in her thinking with the way she came at Monica. People (Monica included) should obviously be allowed to have complex feelings around a situation. Humans aren't light switches that can turn off their emotions and erase past experiences with a person they loved even if it turns out that person has done horrible things. It's a bit ridiculous for the lawyer to imply that Monica is somehow to blame for not seeing signs. Monica was coaching Jerry in a collegiate setting. What signs was she supposed to see? It was also unfair for the lawyer to suggest that Monica's statement on Twitter was inadequate. In reality, it's crazy that society expects a lightning flash public response when evidence and information can take time to fully come to light. People SHOULD take their time to hear all of the information and then release a thoughtful response, and I thought she did just fine.
I have previously stated in past review episodes that I disagree with many of Monica's coaching tactics (I think some of it's dangerous for the athletes), so to be clear, I'm not a hardcore Monica fan. But the attacks she endured on social media and then again from the lawyer after the news broke are honestly just gross. Another person's pain (the twins who came forward about Jerry) shouldn't discount someone else's pain (Monica, Jerry's teammates, etc.). You can't tell someone that they aren't allowed to hurt or how they are allowed to grieve.
Well done episode about a horrible situation.
