Cape Verdeans misrepresented
cvdude61722 January 2021
Just started watching the show on Hulu, always wanted to watch it since it was based in Boston where I'm from. I was intrigued and surprised when I first heard Rizzoli say Cape Verdeans and thought cool since I'm Cape Verdean we were gonna get some representation. I was sadly mistaken since it seems they did a basic Google search and mixed in other cultures based off the language type. We as Cape Verdeans speaks Cape Verdean Creole. They've combined our culture to Haitian Creole simply because they both have Creole in their name...smh. Creole means mix. Also the characters in the show that are portrayed as Cape Verdean are seen wearing clothing as if they were from one of the central African countries. We as Cape Verdeans don't wear this type of clothing. We pretty much wear normal clothing since we're more intwined with the Portuguese culture. The whole portrayal of Cape Verdeans in this episode is just bad and wrong, wasn't even sure if they were speaking the correct language or even Portuguese at least...just terrible. As for the show overall I don't know of I can keep interest in it since it's not even filmed in Boston either.
