[Editor’s Note: The following contains spoilers from “The Twilight Zone” Episode 1, “The Comedian,” and Episode 2, “Nightmare at 30,000 Feet.”]
CBS All Access’ reimagining of “The Twilight Zone” delivers true anthology storytelling in that each episode is a standalone plot than can be enjoyed all by itself. But for “Twilight Zone” diehards, the reboot also has fun paying homage to Rod Serling’s classic series through visual, character, or narrative references. They’re not only an entertaining way to honor the show’s roots, but each nod to the past also creates a connection to the present — as if they all exist in the same universe, or zone.
The new “Twilight Zone” also adds to the mythology with its own references within Jordan Peele’s rebooted universe, creating new connections that knit the episodes together in spirit.

There are a number of pop culture references in Jordan Peele's Us, but few have as personal a connection as one of the very first the director manages to slip in. (Note: very minor spoilers to follow!)
The very first scene in the film is of an old-school TV playing an ad for the 1986 event Hands Across America. Next to the TV are a few shelves holding VHS tapes, and The Goonies is one of them. But next to it, in a much plainer sleeve, is a copy of C.H.U.D.. If you haven't seen it, the 1984 horror-slash-sci-fi flick from director Douglas Cheek imagines what would happen if a bunch of murderous, humanoid monsters began pouring out of the sewers under New York City to seek revenge on humans.
If you've seen Us, hopefully you understand why Peele decided to include a nod to a film about creatures rising up...

With the release of “Us,” Jordan Peele has cemented his status as the next can’t-miss horror filmmaker. He’s also proven himself to be quite the horror expert, as he’s sprinkled in the most references to fright flicks we’ve seen since “American Horror Story.” Here are some of the references and inspirations we caught. (Warning: Minor Spoilers!)
At the start of the film, we see a commercial for “Hands Across America” on an old Crt flanked by several VHS tapes. One of the tapes is for the movie “C.H.U.D.,” which stands for Cannibalistic Humanoid Underground Dwellers. While the Tethered aren’t seen eating the bodies of those they kill, the parallel to monsters that live in the sewers turns out to be very appropriate.
The Crt intro is also used by another recently released horror film, “Climax,” which premiered in Cannes last year and is in theaters now.

Jordan Peele's Us opens March 22, and he recently revealed to Rolling Stone that the inspiration for this horror flick came from an episode of The Twilight Zone called "Mirror Image." The show tells the story of a woman who encounters her double at a bus stop and fears the duplicate will assume her identity. Peele's film, which costars Black Panther alums Lupita Nyong'o and Winston Duke, builds on this concept by highlighting the theme "We are our own worst enemy." His story centers on a young married couple and their children, who find themselves fending off a home invasion from ominous shadow beings - evil doppelgängers Peele refers to as "The Tethered." So if you're looking for more creepy theories on the duality of the human mind, these 10 thrillers may be just what the doctor ordered.

Rod Serling’s The Twilight Zone has inspired countless stories and films over the years. So many people have borrowed from that classic series for their own purposes. Even Jordan Peele’s upcoming horror movie Us, was inspired by it!
With Peele also producing the upcoming Twilight Zone revival series, it makes sense that he would want to talk about the series and connect it to Us. While talking with Rolling Stone, Peele said that Us was inspired by one of his favorite The Twilight Zone episodes titled “Mirror Image.”
The episode starred actress Vera Miles, and it tells the story of a young career woman named Miss Barnes. While waiting for the bus, she encounters a woman that looks exactly like her and she becomes convinced that her doppelgänger is an evil entity from a parallel universe who’s out to eliminate and replace her.

Jordan Peele plotted his “Get Out” follow-up carefully, turning down offers to direct major Hollywood franchises in favor of staying true to his vision. For his next film, the actor-turned-director wanted to honor his favorite genre with a more traditional horror film, complete with jump scares and monsters. Titled “Us,” the film follows a family who become haunted by their own demonic shadow selves, which Peele has dubbed the Tethered.
In a recent interview with Rolling Stone, Peele revealed that the idea for “Us” came from one of his favorite “Twilight Zone” episodes, “Mirror Image,” which made an impression on him as a kid. The episode, written by series creator and narrator Rod Serling, follows a woman who, after encountering her doppelganger at a bus stop, becomes convinced it came from a parallel universe in order to replace her.
“It’s terrifying, beautiful, really elegant storytelling,” Peele said. “And it opens up a world.

Mr. Scratch might have driven out Hotch out of the Bau, but he is far from done with the team. The latest Criminal Minds episode, "Mirror Image," saw Scratch go after another member of the Bau, Tara. Thinking she was meeting with her estranged brother Gabriel, Tara instead met with a disturbed, confused and manipulated man named Desmond who Scratch made believe he was Tara's brother, Gabriel. TVGuide.com sat down with Aisha Tyler, who plays Dr. Tara Lewis, to talk about the events of the episode and what Mr. Scratch has in store for the Bau the rest of the season.

Mr. Scratch returned in Criminal Minds' "Mirror Image," and this time, his focus was on Tara. After kidnapping her brother, he sent one of his brainwashed victims to her, and Desmond Holt was completely convinced he was Gabriel. And in order to find Gabriel, they had to get through to Desmond.
Here's how Mr. Scratch continued to terrorize the Bau in "Mirror Image."...

The focus returns to Mr. Scratch as he continues to terrorize the Bau in Criminal Minds' "Mirror Image," and with Hotch and Jack in witness protection, another member of the Bau becomes his focus: Tara.
This episode also allows for the opportunity to get to know Dr. Lewis a bit more, as her family is right at the center of the investigation. Her brother is in town, but the two of them don't have a warm, sibling relationship, and their father hopes that they can begin to patch things up over a cup of coffee. Unfortunately, when a man sits down across from Tara for that meeting, that's when the trouble begins.

We’re back with another edition of the Indie Spotlight, highlighting recent independent horror news sent our way. Today’s feature includes VOD release information for Armistice, multiple teaser trailers, a Q&A with Matt Thompson from Bloodline, and a preview of Dept. of Monsterology:
Dept. of Monsterology: ”Officially, it’s the Department of Cryptozoology, Mythological Studies, Parapsychology and Fortean Phenomena. But to the rest of the students and staff at the Dunsany College, baffled by the cloak of secrecy that surrounds the Department and its affairs, it has another, more dismissive, name: The Department of Monsterology. Funded by the mysterious Hampton Foundation, the Dept. operates several field teams that roam the globe on extended research expeditions.
Their brief: to investigate the dark and unexplored corners of our world – the places we’ve forgotten, lost or believe to be mythical. And to study those things that may still be lurking there.

*full disclosure: a screener of this film was provided by the filmmakers. Directors: Chris W. Freeman and Justin Jones. Writer: Chris W. Freeman. Cast: Marissa Skell, Eve Mauro, Ed O'Ross, Yvette Yates, Thomas Downey, Casey Fitzgerald, and Rebecca Grant. Sorority Party Massacre is a horror film from directors Chris W. Freeman and Justin Jones. These two filmmakers have worked on another thriller titled Mirror Image (2012). Their latest indie thriller will release on DVD soon and film fans might want to read this review before buying. Sorority Party Massacre is light on story and character development. And, the bevy of beauties add little to the title, unlike the film's music. This film is more fluff than substance and most viewers might be more entertained by the trailer for this feature, compared to the film itself. The story begins in Grizzly Cove. Here, a Police Captain's (Kevin Sorbo) daughter has gone missing.
