Returning to Minnesota
claudio_carvalho7 July 2014
Dexter meets Lumen in a coffee shop and tries to convince her to return to Minnesota. Debra has one night stand with Quinn and then she goes with Angel to visit the last victim of Fuentes. She learns that the criminal has a tattoo on his wrist. Angel suspects that LaGuerta is having an affair. Dexter decides to go to Boyd's house to investigate who might be the other rapists but he finds that someone has snooped around before. He finds a fingerprint and discovers that it belongs to Lumen. Dexter believes that the rapist Robert Brunner that shared the same cell of Boyd could be one of the men that raped Lumen. Debra continues her investigation and finds two other victims of Fuentes. Angel surprises LaGuerta in a motel room with Jim McCourt and finds what his wife is doing. Debra discovers that Fuentes' tattoo is actually a stamp from a night club. Dexter convinces Lumen to return to Minnesota and brings her to the airport. Quinn hires a dirty narcotics detective to follow Dexter.

"First Blood" is another good sequel of this great season. Angel's suspicion about his wife shows how insecure he is in his marriage. Dexter believes that he got rid off Lumen but it is a great surprise in the conclusion. Quinn is playing with fire and his fate is intriguing. My vote is eight.

Clumsy writing but captivating modern fairytale, sugary and salty arcs, flourishing Julia Stiles, intriguing dual elements and Desperate "BatisGuerta" V
igoatabase25 October 2010
And the last show standing is… Dexter ! Of course. Who could give up on Dex and his spicy sister ? The Beauty and the Beast proved once more that our favorite serial is not ready to jump the shark, but definitely in shape to annihilate it like if it was a giant school of piranhas. Of course I wish they would also take care of Batista & LaGuerta but after watching this installment I've definitely changed my mind about their relationship. Yes, they deserve their own spin-off. Because it would be the perfect way to get ride of them ! Seriously their arc wasn't as painful as in Practically Perfect so it's not that bad. In fact since the previous episode I'm even starting to consider its potential considering the impact it had on other characters.

As for the rest it was wicked as usual but I couldn't help noticing a few mistakes and inaccuracies. In the third episode I already noticed that what Jennifer Carpenter said about a corpse wasn't compatible with Deb's development. She knows her investigation can lead to innocent people being killed so she should be more careful. Still her chemistry with Masuka was excellent and I really enjoyed their slightly underground story. The filming was also quite expressive, front Carpenter and back tattoo. Shame on sexy TV ! Otherwise these funny moments couldn't hide an other major issue. In fact I'm starting to question the writing because it's getting clumsy. In season 4 after Dex stang Trinity and had to go back to the police station the last escaped and didn't go back to his vehicle. It wouldn't have been secure and logical. In First Blood a similar event occurred but its development went the other way, the wrong one. Game over, insert coin ! We should also question LaGuerta and the other detectives behavior regarding Dexter. Quinn is on his tail but what about her ? Has she forgotten about Doakes ? I don't ! So I wonder if she'll wake up anytime soon because for the moment this season has far too many plot holes. Julia Stiles is convincing and touching as Lumen Pierce but even an ivory beauty can't hide the seams of the rag she wears. So I really hope the writers will pay more attention to these details in the upcoming episodes because I like to think that most viewers are as demanding as I am.

Still the dual contents should be deep and fascinating enough to captivate your soul. From the rainbow baby to the predictable but twisted ending there were plenty of bitter sweet ingredients. One disturbing scene with Lumen was also quite intense and long enough to rise my heartbeat rate in a split second ! Last but not least the mirroring pattern used to develop Dex and Lumen is intriguing. Indeed it's like if they were enduring the same painful journey, life, but with opposite experiences of it. In fact it's quite interesting that the writers have decided to play with the fairytale ambivalence. What if Lumen was the Beast ? Does Dex want to become a Beauty ? I can't wait to get answers and of course ask more questions !

Under the bridge
jotix10013 July 2011
Warning: Spoilers
This chapter begins with a gathering of parents at a place where the children are playing under a round multicolored tent-like. One of the mothers takes her son in her arms and notices a scratch on his face. She figures it must have come from Harrison. Dexter gets dirty looks as he departs. He decides to go back to Sonya with his son, after the threats she made of not wanting to take care of the boy again.

Lumen Pierce is seen at the coffee shop where Dexter goes. She is in a much better frame of mind. Dexter has come with a ticket for her to go back to Minnesota, something she is reluctant to do. She wants to continue her search for Robert Brunner, the friend of Boyd who abused her, and still at large.

Dexter gets lucky in locating Robert Brunner, who has been spotted living under the Julia Tuttle bridge. He is surprised when the man he think is responsible for what happened to Lumen had nothing to do with the crime itself. In fact, he goes back after not finding Lumen in her motel room because she has gone after Brunner. Dexter arrives in time to prevent her killing the man.

Deb and Batista get lucky when they go to interview Jandro at the hospital. He cooperates with the detectives and even discloses an observation about the man that attacked him: he draws the tattoo on his hand, something for them to go on. Upon checking with Masuka, he sends them to talk to an artist Michael Angelo for clues about the nature of the markings. Michael Angelo, a woman, shows an unusual interest in Deb. It is Deb who discovers that the tattoo is not such a thing, but a logo for a dance club.

Batista is clearly jealous of his wife. She has been working to close with the I.A. man. The sergeant goes nuts when he discovers a text message in her phone that seems to indicate she is going to have a tryst at a motel. Figuring the worst, Batista arrives when Maria has busted a bad Stan Liddy in a room because she was wired.

Directed by Romeo Tirone, and written by Timothy Schlattmann, this was another good episode in the series, well paced and quite involving, as most of the chapters are. Julia Stiles shows again as Lumen, the battered young woman fighting her demons. Ms. Stiles gives a good performance opposite Michael C. Hall. They have some good chemistry going on. Peter Weller shows up in a small role. The regulars and the guest cast do their best to keep things moving.

S5.E5 - Lumen [9/10]
panagiotis199319 September 2023
Warning: Spoilers
(S5. E5) My Reaction / Review for Dexter Season 5 Episode 5 ''First Blood'': Episode 4 was great and I gave it a rating of 9/10. Let's see if this one is better or worse. Can Dexter really trust Lumen with his secret? Killing her would be the smart thing to do but it would be against Harry's code. Masuka always makes me smile, I don't care if they think that his jokes are lame. So Dex's next victim will be a s-ex offender? That would be awesome. Dex got the wrong guy? Damn. Deb is literally sleeping with any guy she sees. Wow Deb found a brutal scene, absolutely disturbing. Maria is to blame for the miscommunication, she should have talked with Angel. So Lumen lied, she didn't leave Miami, that's bad news. My rating is 9/10.

You get the horn
dannylee-780828 January 2022
Warning: Spoilers
1. Masuka has a dragon tattoo 2. Lumen doesn't actually take the flight 3. Quinn hires someone

Dexter worries about Harrison turning out to be like him - which shows that while he acknowledges his brokenness, he doesn't want his child to go through the same thing.

The lumen plot is a little bad. It's hardly interesting and it doesn't really make a lot of sense why she would not leave Miami since we haven't been fully explained what's going on with her family. Overall, this season and this episode are losing a lot of momentum and for Dexter, this is a common problem for early in the season. Hopefully it pays Off.
