Good Story, But Anticlimactic Ending
GeneralFlask23 May 2023
Warning: Spoilers
The story of this film is pretty good, Ronald is being harassed by an activist named Erik because of his pig farm not being humane enough. Erik is very petty person who just starts to basically torture Ronald because his own life isn't going as well as he had hoped, in one scene he tries to kiss his friends girlfriend and after being rejected he immediately goes to the farm to harass Ronald. Throughout the film we see Ronald's mental state deteriorate due to these constant threats made by Erik to the point where Ronald almost shoots his 7-year-old daughter Eva when trying to defend his farm from Erik. So when you finally get to the end of the film you are ready for Ronald to shoot Erik with his shotgun. But after Erik throws some blood on Eva, Ronald loses it and shoots himself instead letting Erik go without being punished. The only punishment he gets is I guess the guilt of basically taking Ronalds life but since he hasn't shown any empathy towards Ronald I doubt he'll even care that he forced him to commit suicide. It sucks because the buildup to the ending was pretty well done but it's just very anticlimactic.

Finally a Dutch film that is about something
nickcorner12 April 2023
After tons of weak romantic comedies Polder comes as a pleasant surprise. The film caused much commotion in Holland because it is set against a backdrop of a pig farm, a subject heavily debated these days because of the environmental issues surrounding these farms and the regulations the government is imposing. But Polder isn't actually about that. It is about two people whose lives become entangeld because the one (animal rights activist) and the other (pig farmer) have no dialogue between them. Painstakingly accurate is the representation of the mirrored lives both men lead. But is only us, the viewer, who know about how much these men have in common. The lack of true insight in the farmer's life causes Eric, the activist, to undertake actions that have far heavier consequences than he himself could anticipate. The distance 'social' media creates plays a part as wel, as Eric doesn't mind rallying other people against Ronald the farmer. The film is set like a play, only displaying the bare minimum of actors and locations, which makes this drama all the more compelling.

A refreshingly honest movie about an accurate topic. To have an inside in both the mind of the pigfarmer and the activist is an suprisingly nice touch.

Pigfarmer Ronald is struggeling to keep his head above water, while in the meantime activist Eric is getting angrier by the minute. The clash between these two is inevitable. Both have their reasons, both are understandable.

Set in the Dutch polder, it is very recognizable for a lot of people. The supermarkets play a big part in the story, even when they are not mentioned by name.

The unexpected end of the movie is like the cherry on the cake!
