Royal Rumble 2010 Thoughts

Royal Rumble 2010 was the 23rd annual Royal Rumble PPV event produced by the WWE. It took place January 31, 2010, at the Phillips Arena in Atlanta, Georgia. The show had a great attendance of 16,697 with a buyrate from homes of 462,000. This was second full year of the PG Era and also the last PPV event featuring the ECW Brand which was disbanded a month later in replace for NXT(not the one you probably are thinking about). The event was also notable for the return of the Rated-R Superstar.

6 matches took place on the show including the traditional royal rumble match with the same rules and aftermath reward of the winner Receiving a world championship title shot at the then-upcoming WrestleMania. 2010 is one of the years that doesn't age well from my view as I remember I was slowly losing my huge love and can't miss anything support for WWE. I was growing up and other things likes football and comics were growing on me.

The Good - The Royal Rumble match was fun at the end of the night with some very memorable highlights. Obviously the most iconic moment was Edge making a return and winning at the end. It was really awesome and the crowd really missed him. HBK also looked sharped in the match as it was him playing a key role to wanting to win this match more than anything as this was the build up to him ready to face the Undertaker at WrestleMania. He really sold his frustration of being eliminated. I also liked the ECW and World Heavyweight title matches.

The Meh - The WWE Championship match was kind of a letdown with the finish also damaging a lot of the match. It was an okay way to setup what we were going to get at WrestleMania but still, no one likes a DQ finish. I also didn't care about the US Title match between MVP & Miz. I like to point out the crowd was not one of the solid crowds which is shocking as Atlanta is a great wrestling city.

The Bad - There were 2 negatives of this show really. Mickie James vs. Michelle McCool was a controversial storyline and the match being a squash didn't help it either. The commentary was also stupid tonight as this was the beginning of a time it was difficult to have ears for watching WWE television.

Overall - It was a decent show. Nothing quite atrocious or embarrassing happened on the show but not a lot to remember aside from the big moment of one of my favorites of all time returning in winning the rumble. This was probably the last Rumble to have a satisfying winner booked as from here till the end of the decade, Rumble winners were odd or not right choices.

Score - 6 out of 10: Decent

Edge of Nowhere

Another random DVD watched prior to posting on eBay was The Royal Rumble of 2010. Normally I love the Royal Rumble event, the surprises, the returns but looking back on the 2010 edition from 12 years later this was a disappointing time.

The 2010 Royal Rumble emanated from the Phillips Arena in Atlanta, Georgia.

The opening match was Ezekiel Jackson challenging Christian for the ECW title. This match was OK, Jackson is a limited performer, but Christian gets a decent match out of him. The next match was for the United States Championship, with The Miz against MVP. This too was pretty good until the abrupt finish that ended it and rather came out of nowhere. This feud though would continue for the rest of the PPV. Another bad ending undermines the Sheamus against Randy Orton match.

The real lowlight is the women's match between Michelle McCool and Mickie James. This whole angle seems based on the ridiculous idea that Mickie James is overweight. Fortunately, the actual match is over really quickly but the bad taste lingers on. Michelle's husband is out next, and he beats Rey Mysterio in another lacklustre affair.

The actual rumble was probably the best section of the show, but even that seems like a fairly standard line up. There were strong showings from CM Punk and from Shawn Michaels - who had his own storyline going about getting back to Wrestlemania for another shot at the Undertaker. The big moment was the return of Edge after six months out, who returned looking for revenge on his former partner Chris Jericho.

I think, pretty much across the board, the show suffered from not having matches between clear heels and faces. The Miz/MVP, Undertaker/Mysterio and Sheamus/Orton matches all split the crowd and the matches suffered because of it. Aside from the actual rumble itself, the matches were all disappointing and the whole event was underwhelming.
