Fortress Raid
A_Kind_Of_CineMagic3 September 2020
After a run of absolutely tremendous episodes this feels less incredible in a way as it is yet another Jedi rescue mission. However, this is one of the best rescue missions you could have and is superb entertainment!

The Citadel is a convincingly difficult fortress to break someone out of with its defences, special droids and great, menacing commander making it an effectively perilous mission.

The dark torture scenes of Jedi Master Piell add grim quality and the revelation of who Piell's Captain is during this story adds huge pleasure and thrill for original trilogy fans.

The action is great, the dialogue is great and despite not being the level of storytelling the awesome previous episodes were, this is exactly the kind of quality adventure I want from the series.

My rating: 9/10.

Fun, underrated episode

The Citadel in general is an underrated arc in my opinon. Ahsoka gets a lot of character development and she's great overall in this arc. Fives and Echo are great as usual. The Citadel itself is imposing and intimidating and is a great setting for a series of episodes. It's a serious arc, and that suits the rescue mission. A very solid.episode for Clone Wars, and one of the best in Season 3.

The Citadel

A classic episode for this show and the overall "Star Wars" franchise. The rescue mission has been a thing since the very first film, and this one combined great writing and great nostalgia. None of the elements felt forced or contrived as it all matched together. The tone of the episode was great, and I got the classic adventure feel from the episode. There were some great tie-ins to prequels and the introduction of another Jedi who seems like he could carry his own against a squad of battle droids. I got the adrenaline and excitement from the episode that I needed. I also love the introduction of Tarkin into the prequel era. He has always been one of my favorite characters and to see him interact with the same sort of snarly exterior that he had before made me very happy.

Not the best episode at all because of another rescue mission. At least this time they made the rest of the episode unique, with a few interesting scenes.

More filler (but solid development for Ahsoka)

Warning: Spoilers
This episode just doesn't accomplish all that much that is interesting. The escape from the citadel features more dry battles in hallways that lack suspense and another forgettable, growly villain. So many placeholder episodes.

The only thing we do get from the episode is more development for Ahsoka. Ahsoka feels infantilized because Anakin doesn't want her to come along on the mission. They both have had this kind of dynamic before, but the difference here is the confidence in which Ahsoka responds. She vents briefly to Plo Koon and then decides to go in to the carbonite despite Anakin commanding her to stay behind. When Obi-Wan and Anakin find that she has snuck aboard, she calmly tells Anakin that she is coming along (she claims Plo Koon approved it but that remains to be seen). It's a subtle moment but it displays Ahsoka's intriguing mix of cheerfulness and iron will. If only the rest of the episode was as interesting as that mini-arc.
