- The boyfriend of a federal judge's daughter is killed and the daughter is missing, but has she been kidnapped or did she do it?
- Gentle children's books illustrator Austin Marr (23) is stabbed to death in strict federal judge Pauline Fitwilliam's guest house. Austin was the lover of her contrary youngest daughter, Abigail 'Abby', who is missing and was recently released from drug rehabilitation. Pauline points to the White Supremacist gang of Raymond Tubbs, whom she put in jail and threatened her and her family, to which end he may use coke dealer Howard 'Howie' Dressler. Patrick mistrusts the estate security and makes Abby's sister Sophie confess a secret: the lovers just had their first row, and indeed her fingerprints are on the knife. Patrick deducts mundane 'best friend' Danielle stole Abby's credit card. Pauline's ma Ethel Sebring is being buried after a lingering disease, treated by Dr. Saban. Patrick ties everything together and sets an unsavory trap.—KGF Vissers
- On the day of the funeral of her mother, Judge Pauline Fitwilliam learns that her daughter Abby is missing, and her boyfriend Austin Marr was murdered in the guest room stabbed to death. Lisbon and Patrick go to the mansion to investigate the case and the judge believes the white supremacist Raymond Tubbs, who has threatened her in court, is the responsible for the murder and abduction. They unsuccessfully follow many leads and Patrick believes Abby is dead and her body is hidden in the estate.—Claudio Carvalho, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil
- The case of a murder and missing person on an intensely secure wealthy family's compound perplexes Jane and the CBI team.—CBS Publicity
- Sebring Estate, Atherson, Cali., Private Wake of Ethel Black Sebring A woman asks her daughter Sophie to try to convince her sister to make a token appearance. Sophie goes looking for Abby in the guest house and finds a dead man instead.
The CBI hits the scene. Cho reports the victim is Austin Mar. The house belongs to a federal judge named Pauline Fitzwilliam (Christine Rose), her mother just died. (Fun fact: Rose aka Angela Petrelli, is the second "Heroes" alum to appear on the show, following Jack Coleman, "HRG" last week.)
There's tons of security everywhere. Jane is late.
Lisbon talks to Sophie, who's upset over finding her sister's boyfriend dead. He's a children's book illustrator. She hasn't seen her sister since yesterday afternoon.
Security says they've sealed the property and Abby hasn't left the property but no one can find her.
Jane finally gets there. He gets stopped by Marcus Whiteside, chief of security, who gives him lip when he tries to go around the metal detector. Jane insists Marcus go first. He beeps. He goes back through. Jane puts change in Marcus's pocket and he beeps again. Jane goes through.
Inside, Lisbon sits with Pauline and watches video of Abby and Austin being all kissy face. Pauline thinks Raymond Tubbs, a white supremacist she sentenced, is getting back at her. He's in Folsom. Last month he sent a member of his gang to break into their house. She demands info on what they've found and is sure it'll lead to Tubbs.
Lisbon says Abby's issues with drug and alcohol abuse might have something to do with the situation. Pauline's sure her daughter was sober.
Lisbon says there were fingernail scratches on Austin's face. Pauline goes mama bear on Lisbon, telling her not to waste her time investigating her daughter. Lisbon stands her ground.
Inside, Dr. Ed Saban finds Jane lurking. Saban was 93-year-old Ethel's doctor. He asks Jane what he thinks happened to Abby. Jane plays dumb but asks what she's like. He says she's vivacious. Lisbon calls. Jane reports the family doctor said Abby was an "unstable nymphomaniacal stoner."
Sophie finds Jane and Lisbon walking outside. He bluntly says Abby is either dead or she killed Austin and ran away. Jane announces that Sophie's hiding something.
She says she saw Abby and Austin arguing yesterday in the guest house. Austin stopped Abby from leaving and she hit him in the face, causing him to bleed.
Lisbon gets a call saying the prints on the knife were Abby's.
Back at CBI, Lisbon talks to security guy Marcus, who is positive Abby didn't leave the compound.
Van Pelt reports Abby used her card in San Fran. Jane asks what she bought: a skirt, suit, blazer and handbag.
At the store, the store clerk gives Lisbon an address Abby left for her alterations. Lisbon and Van Pelt go there.
When a blond answers the door, they arrest her and barge in.
They find Jane, who calmly introduces them to Abby's best friend Daniela.
At the office, Jane explains he used a society mag to find Daniela.
Daniela tells Van Pelt that Abby lent her her card three days ago. Abby was drinking at the time. Austin wasn't there, he kept her sober.
Sophie stops by the office with a voice mail from an angry man telling her what happened to her sister and her friend was "what you get for messing with Raymond Tubbs." It ends with "8-8", a white supremacist code.
At Folsom Prison, Cho meets with Tubbs. He says there's an "Aryan soldier" who honors him in the compound, but the call was a dumb move.
Back at the compound, Jane asks Marcus the best place to break into the compound. After some prodding, Marcus offers the North Wall. Then he sends Jane through the metal detector again.
Cho has enough with Tubbs when he won't give details. He thinks Tubbs is making it up. "You're a sad little man, alone in a box, living on delusions of grandeur."
When Cho is about to walk out, Tubbs protests that Howard Dressler is his guy inside.
At the compound, Saban (pronounced Saw-BONN) checks on Pauline. She's working on her mother's eulogy. She's being buried on the property.
Jane talks to Pauline about her daughter. She thinks Abby is dead. Jane says "it's not unlikely."
At the office, Van Pelt and Rigsby go through the logs of everyone that's been on the compound in the last few months. He notices her new necklace from O'Laughlin.
Back in Pauline's office, Jane rolls up Pauline's office rug. VP calls Lisbon saying they found Dressler.
The alarms go off on the compound. Lisbon and Marcus apprehend the person trying to leave: it's Jane with the office rug on his shoulder.
Lisbon and Jane wait for Hightower in her office. Pauline called about the rug. Jane insists he was working the case, the rug was a "stand-in corpse" and he just wanted to see if someone could get a dead body off the property.
Pauline wants Jane off the case. He argues she's a suspect because she hasn't been cleared and should be able to dictate who investigates her. Hightower goes along, but tells him to call if there's any more "foolishness."
Risgby interviews Howard Dressler, who calls Tubbs a patriot but says he had nothing to do with the murder. He admits he sold Abby drugs, but nothing for months until the other day. She wanted coke and downers. He showed up to give them to her, but couldn't get near because there were cops everywhere.
Jane is sure Abby's body is somewhere on the compound, but he's not sure why the killer would leave her behind. Suddenly Jane's sure he knows where it is.
Back on the compound during Ethel's service, Jane calls Hightower and leaves a message saying there's going to be foolishness.
Jane interrupts the service with an "important announcement" that Abby is dead. Sophie cries and Pauline glares. Jane says she's hidden in Ethel's casket and wants to open it, telling Lisbon to trust him.
In a back room, Dr. Saban protests that Ethel was dignified in life and would want to be dignified in death.
Hightower shows up in time for the opening, with Pauline watching. Saban opens the coffin. Only Ethel is inside. Pauline slaps Jane.
Later, Jane protests to Lisbon and Hightower that it doesn't make sense that he was wrong. He's sure Abby is on the compound. He apologizes. Hightower orders a search.
Later, Hightower chews Lisbon out for trusting Jane. He says again that he made a mistake, but says he'll make up for it by revealing the killer tonight. He asks what the chances are that he'll be wrong twice in a row.
Late at night, Lisbon and Jane huddle in a small space. They watch as Dr. Saban hauls in a body wrapped in plastic. A cell phone rings. He realizes it's in the coffin. He opens it and finds it on Ethel. He answers -- it's Jane. Lisbon busts in. Back at the office, Lisbon explains that Saban had to hide Abby's body because she had drugs in her system that he'd given her. He says Abby relapsed a few days before Ethel died. He says he was managing her addiction, for which he was paid.
With Ethel dying he needed a new source of income. But she OD'd and he couldn't save her. Austin found them and was going to call the police. So he picked up the knife to scare him and ended up stabbing him.
He made it look like Abby did it.
Back at the office, Hightower checks on Jane, saying that Pauline said if Jane apologizes she won't pursue sanctions against him, Lisbon or Hightower herself. He tells her to tell Pauline "she's a self righteous embittered old bat and she should thank me."
Pauline appears and says he's right, and his arrogant, callous, juvenile behavior did reveal the truth. She thanks him and as she's walking away, he says sorry.
He kisses a stunned Hightower on the cheek.
