Welcome to a brand-new series here on Nerdly, Terrible Terror, in which we highlight some of, what we think, are the Worst horror movies to have ever burnt my retina with their atrociousness. Speaking of atrocious, here’s my review of that eponymous horror – which not only made it to UK DVD back in the day but also – somehow – screened at Frightfest London in 2011!
Stars: Cristian Valencia, Clara Moraleda, Chus Pereiro | Written and Directed by Fernando Barredo Luna
The feature film debut of writer/director Fernando Barredo Luna, Atrocious is the latest in the long-line of horror movies originating from Europe, in fact this one, like its more famous compatriot [Rec], comes from from Spain and one can’t help but compare the two – a little unfair perhaps, but given the films’ clear similarities it seems inevitable.

The creators of Atrocious are getting creepy once again, and this time in English. Atrocious director Fernando Barreda Luna and Jessica Villegas will serve as producers on 21 Days, the debut feature by writer director Kathleen Behun.Three filmmakers embark on a paranormal challenge by barricading themselves in a house so haunted, no family has been able to live in more than 21 days, in order to film the supernatural phenomena which presumably occur... but nothing can prepare them for the evil that lies in wait... There are some places so dark, so evil, where no human-‐ no living thing-‐ should dwell...Pre-production is already under way with a fall completion targeted....

Atrocious director Fernando Barreda Luna has something very different in mind for his next film. No more bumps in the night or shaky point of view camera here. No, instead he is cooking up a violent and stylish tale of action and revenge.Kiss of Vengeance is a western tale about a girl who becomes a true hero that fights the Mafia, inspired by a deep desire of pursuing the killers who executed her family in a horrible massacre back in the 90's. This is the lonely journey about a renegade young rider who can't trust anyone but her own skills. Set in the outlawed border of Mexico and U.S. ruled by the Cartels.A short film project designed as a precursor to a planned feature involving...

Full disclosure: I wasn’t a huge fan of director Fernando Barreda Luna’s found footage horror flick “Atrocious.” Although the film came packaged with a great title and a solid trailer, the flick just didn’t live up to the hype. In fact, I probably wouldn’t have bothered with the filmmaker’s follow-up “Kiss of Vengeance” if I didn’t have a thing for violent revenge cinema. The film is currently being crafted as a short, though Luna hopes to transform this mini-feature into a full-length motion picture down the line. Maybe he’s thinking something along the lines of “Hard Revenge, Milly.” I can’t say I would have a problem with that. Anyway, here’s what the flick is all about: Kiss of Vengeance is a western tale about a girl who becomes a true hero that fights the Mafia, inspired by a deep desire...

Back in early 2011, horror fan-site juggernaut Bloody Disgusting took a stand for independent and foreign genre lore by partnering with The Collective and AMC Theaters, establishing distribution company Bloody Disgusting Selects. Their purpose? To hand-pick often glanced over horror gems which get lost in the mainstream remake shuffle, and grant those deemed worthy of proper theatrical and Video On Demand releases exposure.
As an avid follower and member of “The Infected” (the site’s online community), Bloody Disgusting Selects seemed like a gleaming beacon of hope in the world of inventive, creative, and one-of-a-kind horror experiences. Selected by site staffers and genre enthusiast super fans sharing a common love for skin crawling madness, I made it my mission not to skip a single feature. Now, with their first ten tales of terror rated and reviewed, I thought I’d touch upon Bloody Disgusting’s foray into film distribution and determine the company’s future.

Fernando Barreda Luna, director of the 2010 film Atrocious, has announced a collaboration with writer Sean Wathen for his first English language horror flick, The Dragger.
Luna announced that Wathen will write the film and the ball is already rolling. "We are developing our next horror project called The Dragger," Luna said. "The film began pre-production in January. This will be my first English language film, and it's being produced by my wife, Jessica Villegas. For now all I can say is that we're shooting in the U.S. and that it will scare the hell out of you!"
You've gotta like the sound of that! Especially when it's coming from a guy who directed a film entitled Atrocious! Gotta figure he knows his horror! More info on this as it becomes available.

Fernando Barreda Luna put his own mark on the "found footage" sub-genre with the Spanish import Atrocious, released last summer here in the U.S. on DVD.
A few months back, Luna used his Facebook page to alert fans that his next "horror project [is] called The Dragger ... This will be my first English language film and it's being produced by my wife Jessica Villegas. For now, all I can say is that we're shooting in the U.S. and that it will scare the hell out of you!"
Since then we have been informed Luna has tapped a U.S. writer to pen The Dragger.

In the tradition of Paranomral Activity comes the mind-bending, gruesome thriller Atrocious and CineMovie is giving away Atrocious DVD copies to 5 lucky winners.

One of the unfortunate side effects of Paranormal Activity is that all found footage films are now getting compared to it. Additionally these films however original and separate from Paranormal Activity they may be, are marketed to us in such a way that we are forced to draw the inevitable similarities anyways. This may not be such a bad thing for films that are similar to Paranormal Activity but in Atrocious' case, the comparisons are simply not warranted. While Atrocious may be a film in the style of Paranormal Activity and the Blair Witch Project---it ultimately has nothing to do with either of those films.
And this will upset some people.
On April 4th of 2010, Spanish police reported the discovery of 37 hours of recorded evidence that shed some new light on a gruesome murder investigation.

Director: Fernando Barreda Luna. Review: Adam Wing. Not only does the line “The mind is like a labyrinth, in which anyone can get lost” open Fernando Barreda Luna’s shaky-cam horror, it pretty much describes the entire plot of the movie. It would be too easy to rip a film called Atrocious to pieces, Luna has kind of opened himself up to attack on this one, but I’m happy to report that his Spanish thriller debut - a cross between The Blair Witch Project and Silent House - doesn’t quite live up to (or should that be down to) it’s critic baiting title. The Quintanilla family travel to their old farmhouse in Sitges, where Christian (Christian Valencia) and July (Clara Moraleda), two bored siblings, investigate the Legend of the Girl in the Garraf woods, using video cameras to record their findings – because it wouldn’t be a shaky-cam horror without them.

30 Minutes Or Less (15)
(Ruben Fleischer, 2011, Us) Jesse Eisenberg, Aziz Ansari, Danny McBride. 83 mins
After the heights of The Social Network, Eisenberg is demoted to a lowly pizza delivery boy for this casual caper movie. He's driven to rob banks at the behest of McBride's criminal non-mastermind, with buddy Ansari roped in for comic effect. In fact, comic effect seems to be all this is after. Like a dodgy pizza, it's enjoyable at the time but nutritionally dubious, a bit thin, and just about gone cold by the time it's finished.
Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy (15)
(Thomas Alfredson, 2011, UK/Fra/Ger) Gary Oldman, Tom Hardy, Benedict Cumberbatch. 127 mins
A very British spy thriller that dispenses with all that hasty pacing and coarse action in favour of well-tailored men talking in rooms. A complex, classy cold war mole-hunt that demands attention, but rewards it richly.

Yet another twist on the "found footage" theme, this Spanish ghost hunt is adding little new to the genre
Some urban legends should remain undisturbed; some "found footage" is better left buried. Atrocious is never quite in that league, exactly, but its camcorder histrionics feel secondhand, shop-worn and verging on redundant. Fernando Barreda Luna's micro-budget Spanish horror flick trails a pair of siblings on a fraught family vacation, through thick stands of bamboo, in search of a ghost. The kids are screaming and the camera joggles us to the point of nausea but, at the end, the film's big reveal is just a cheap, dull shimmer.

I’m a big believer in keeping your expectations in check. If you let them run wild, chances are you’re going to end up with a big ol’ meaty wad of bitter disappointment lodged in your gut. I didn’t heed my own advice this week, and now I’m going to complain about it for a moment. Sorry. Here they are, in no particular order. ——— Atrocious For a lot of people, the “found footage” subgenre is the lowest form of horror entertainment. The jump scares, the nauseating camerawork, the complete lack of originality — it’s the cheapest and easiest way to lure large groups of teenagers into darkened theaters all across the globe. I, however, have an endless love for these flicks, and am quick to forgive their collective shortcomings whenever someone starts cutting them down. Writer/director Fernando Barreda Luna’s 2010 shocker “Atrocious” is one exception to that rule.

If one of Frightfest’s strongest entries so far, The Troll Hunter, represents a fresh take on the found footage film, then Atrocious is its antithesis; an altogether more familiar, by-the-book effort which generates a few palpable thrills yet ultimately outstays its welcome, even at a meagre 75 minutes. Fans of low-budget indie horror might be able to forgive it, but for the rest of us it frustratingly squanders some eerie promise.
Christian (Cristian Valencia) and his sister July are obsessed with urban legends, visiting hotspots, recording any findings and then sharing them online. Their latest excursion is curtailed, however, when their parents whisk them away to a remote holiday home in Sitges. Fortune arises, though, once they learn of a local legend called The Girl in the Garraf Woods, and it’s not long before they sneak away to investigate said wood, located just behind their house.

"'Even a Man Who is Pure in Heart': Filmic Horror, Popular Religion and the Spectral Underside of History," an essay that appeared in the Journal of Religion and Popular Culture in 2005, piqued Michael Guillén's interest in its author, Mario DeGiglio-Bellemare, "a native Montrealer and 'monster kid' who teaches courses on genre cinema and monsters in the Humanities department of John Abbott College." So they met up a few weeks ago at the Fantasia International Film Festival and Michael's transcription of their conversation — touching on national identities, filmmakers who straddle the high and the low, "the knowledge systems of ordinary people" and more — is one of the week's best reads, which is why I wanted to point it out right at the top of this little roundup of horror-related items.

Atrocious is directed by Fernando Barreda Luna (Darkness) and stars Rafael Amaya, Jose Masegosa and Chus Pereiro. Atrocious begins in predictable fashion but builds to become one of the scariest films to come out in years. In Atrocious it’s dark, then light again, then dark yet again in different environments; and all the while a mostly (but not completely) unseen menace stalks and hunts like a specter in a bad dream. Atrocious is definitely low-budget and doesn’t break any barriers regarding production quality or performances. What this film does do better than any in recent memory is capture the raw fear of those in peril in a way that transfers...

Early word has been good on this flick, a Spanish version of Paranormal Activity of sorts, and Bloody Disgusting Selects has picked the film up for a limited theatrical run at AMC Theaters beginning August 17th. Directed by Fernando Barreda Luna, the found footage film has received these two new posters from Nabu Films for Atrocious.
Atrocious is a gruesome, mind-bending thriller shot in a style reminiscent of The Blair Witch Project. The horror film excerpts found footage from a film reel recovered by Spanish police, documenting a family of five discovering the truth behind a dangerous urban legend. The 37 hours of found footage follow Cristian and July Quintanilla passing time at their summer home by investigating a terrifying and mysterious urban legend. As their investigation intensifies, strange occurrences in and around the house escalate rapidly, culminating finally in unspeakable atrocities.

The series kicks off on May 4th with Rammbock and carries on through the summer with the other 3 films: Yellowbrickroad, Cold Fish, and Atrocious. Additionally, the French (non-horror) film Le Herisson (aka Hedgehog) will also be showing courtesy of NeoClassics Films.

As I've stated numerous times, I think the "found footage" subgenre is awesome. I also believe it's here to stay. Sure, everyone and their moms are attempting to make their own cinema verite horror film, but how is that any different than when Halloween inspired a rash of slasher film that are still alive and well 30+ years later? Sifting through hundreds of new films inspired by Paranormal Activity, The Blair Witch Project and Rec, we here at Bloody Disgusting believe we've unearthed a new batch of creepy footage that you guys are absolutely going to love. Joining Bloody Disgusting Selects is Fernando Barreda Luna's Spanish-language Atrocious, which landed on our radar after Ryan Daley reviewed it this past January. It had its world premiere at the Slamdance Film Festival, alongside Sundance in Park City, Utah. The pic joins the previously announced line-up of Rammbock, YelowBrickRoad and Cold Fish.

TwitchFilm has reported that the Insidious producers are going after the Spanish horror film Atrocious. The "found footage" film comes from writer-director Fernando Barreda Luna and screened at Slamdance earlier this year to a creeped out audience. The producing team of Brian Kavanaugh-Jones and Jason Blum have already picked up the rights to the film and will put it on the remake fast track express. Sounds like a cool film but why not just release it over here first?
Synopsis:
In April of 2010, Spanish police reported the discovery of 37 hours of recorded evidence that shed new light on a gruesome murder investigation. The found footage documents a family of five spending their holidays at their summer house, where brother-and-sister Cristian and July Quintanilla pass the time investigating a terrifying local urban legend. As their investigation intensifies, strange occurences in and around the house escalate rapidly, before culminating in unspeakable atrocities.

While most remakes are indeed atrocious, this next one is really Atrocious. No, really, that's the movie's name, Atrocious (review here). What do you mean you're confused? Buck up, little trooper.
While we wait patiently for Celluloid Nightmares to release the original version of the cinéma-vérité style flick, Twitch Film reports that producers Jason Blum (Paranormal Activity) and Brian Kavanaugh-Jones (Insidious) have picked up rights for an American remake of the film.

One of the cooler movies of the year is the "found footage" Spanish-language Atrocious, which Bloody Disgusting's Ryan Daley was a pretty big fan of. Blum and Kavanaugh-Jones have become frequent collaborators, having recently teamed up on Insidious. According to Twitch newcomer (but a man who's been on the horror scene for years) Scott Weinberg, Jason Blum and Brian Kavanaugh-Jones - two of the cats behind Paranormal Activity and Insidious - acquired the rights to the Spanish flick Atrocious . The "found footage" import played to Slamdance Film Festival audiences and revealed what had occurred to a family at their summer home while a brother and sister investigated an urban legend. Fernando Barreda Luna directed. What kind of timeline Blum and Kavanaugh-Jones are working with in terms of the rights is unknown. It could be a priority to remake the film right away or they might hold out until a few other productions, like Lords of Salem by Rob Zombie and Paranormal Activity 3 are done.

Review: Atrocious is a worthy companion thriller to the Paranormal Activity genre (3 And A Half out of 5 stars) Mexican filmmaker Fernando Barreda Luna draws inspiration from past horror classics The Blair Witch Project and Paranormal Activity for his first feature Atrocious, a worthy, Spanish-language addition to the found footage genre. Atrocious is also a bold debut for Luna who helped edit the film, composed its creepy score and co-produced the horror feature via his Mexican production company Nabu Films. Making its North American Premiere in the Narrative Competition section of the 2011 Slamdance Film Fest, Atrocious follows in the path of Paranormal Activity, which wowed Slandance audiences at the same Treasure Mountain screening room just a few years earlier.
