Hello, everyone! It seems like there’s a constant supply of genre films coming out these days, which can make it hard to keep up with everything. Here’s a look at my thoughts on two recent indie projects, Hanna Bergholm’s Hatching and The Aviary from Jennifer Raite and Chris Cullari.
Enjoy!
The Hatching: As far as directorial debuts go, director Hanna Bergholm has done a phenomenal job of quickly establishing herself as one of the most intriguing new talents to watch in the genre space with Hatching. A harrowing exploration of the horrors and pressure that many (if not most) young folks experience throughout adolescence, screenwriter Ilja Rautsi does a great job of crafting a story that seamlessly meshes psychological horror with an unconventional creature feature, resulting in one of the most unique viewing experiences that I’ve had in 2022.

Isla Fisher (Wolf Like Me) and Greg Kinnear (Shining Vale) will topline the family comedy The Present, from director Christian Ditter (How to Be Single), which has entered production in Los Angeles.
In the film from Stuart Ford’s independent content studio AGC Studios, a brilliant boy discovers he can manipulate time using an enchanted family heirloom, then teaming up with his siblings to go back to the eve of their parents’ separation in hopes of changing the outcome. As their schemes become more elaborate, the siblings will learn about family bonds and what they can and can’t control. Fisher and Kinnear are playing the parents in search of reconciliation, with Easton Rocket Sweda (General Hospital), Shay Rudolph (The Baby-Sitters Club) and Mason Shea Joyce (Euphoria) portraying the siblings who just might be the only people who can make that happen.
Ross Butler (Shazam!) also stars in the film...

Two women, Jillian and Blair, flee into the New Mexican desert to escape the clutches of an insidious cult. Consumed by fear and paranoia, they can’t shake the feeling that they are being followed by its leader, a man as seductive as he is controlling. With their supplies dwindling and their senses starting to fail them, they are faced with a horrifying question: how do you run from an enemy who lives inside your head?
With Malin Akerman’s Jillian saying the cult leader they’re running from wanted to carve his cults “logo” into her flesh and the other woman, Blair (Lorenza Izzo) seemingly unaware of herself doing a cult until it was too late, The Aviary screams out that its plot is a riff on the scandal surrounding Alison Mack...

Overcoming their fear of the person who wishes to control them is a powerful motivator for anyone who’s trying to regain dominance over their life. Malin Akerman and Lorenza Izzo‘s protagonists in the new thriller, ‘The Aviary,’ are two such people who are finally mustering up the courage to fight for their independence against the […]

"The Aviary" hits theaters, digital, and on demand on April 29, 2022. The thriller stars Malin Akerman, Lorenza Izzo, and Chris Messina, and follows two women who flee into the New Mexican desert to escape a sinister cult. It's a low-budget cult thriller that features a fantastic turn from Akerman, and a particularly chilling performance from Messina.
I got a chance to chat with writer/directors Chris Cullari and Jennifer Raite about the film, where the idea came from, what cults inspired it, and how even jobs can feel like cults sometimes.

Arriving in theaters and on digital platforms everywhere this Friday is the psychological/survival thriller The Aviary from co-writers/co-directors Jennifer Raite and Chris Cullari. The film stars Malin Akerman, Lorenza Izzo, and Chris Messina, and follows two women (Akerman and Izzo) as they make a daring escape from a cult through the treacherous terrain of the New Mexico desert, all while dealing with the lingering effects of their time in the cult that makes it hard for them to determine whether or not the horrors they are experiencing are real.
Daily Dead recently had the opportunity to speak with both Cullari and Raite about their experiences collaborating on their feature film debut. During our chat, the duo discussed the inspiration behind the story of The Aviary, how the film (scarily) mimics some aspects of modern-day society, working with their cast, utilizing New Mexico as the backdrop for their mind-bending story,...

Before we begin, we should quickly say that this was supposed to be a paired interview – as you’ll be able to tell from the opening few seconds – with Malin Akerman alongside Lorenza Izzo, however sadly due to the latter’s internet connection, it turned into a solo with the former, though when it comes to Akerman, that’s never a bad thing.
Promoting the release of her latest venture The Aviary, a thriller that keeps audiences on the edge of their seat throughout, we discussed the dark nature of this project, and how Akerman went about tackling this quite raw material. She also talks about the unique shooting experience that came with it, which flavour of Cheetos she prefers, and working with Chris Messina.

I'm normally loathe to begin a review with a dictionary definition, but I did find myself turning to Oxford on my shelf to look up the word 'cult': one of those things perhaps, like, porn, that we can't define but we know it when we see it. Obsession and isolation that leads to entrapment can have devastating and permanent affects on the mind, no matter how hard someone tries to break free. That nagging loneliness that leads one to a cult might be too much to bear when one escapes it. And who could resist a person who promises you contentment, satisfaction, and happiness in your life, when we see what alternative the world is offering us? The Aviary tells the story of two women...

The Aviary Trailer: "Malin Akerman, Lorenza Izzo, and Chris Messina star in this twisted thriller about two women's desperate attempt to flee the clutches of Skylight, an insidious cult.
Trapped at Skylight’s isolated desert campus, The Aviary, Jillian (Akerman), and Blair (Izzo) join forces to make a treacherous escape. Alone in the harsh wilderness, they are consumed by paranoia and unable to shake the feeling that they are being followed by the cult's leader, Seth (Messina), a man as seductive as he is controlling. With supplies dwindling and their senses failing, Jillian and Blair are faced with a horrifying question: how do you run from an enemy who lives inside your head?
The feature directorial debut from Chris Cullari and Jennifer Raite who, as writers and creators, have frequently collaborated with Blumhouse TV on projects and first-look deals, and made a splash with their 2012 Vimeo Staff Pick horror-comedy short The Sleepover.

Today we have a new trailer from Saban Films for the upcoming title "The Aviary." The film stars Malin Akerman and Lorenza Izzo as Jillian and Blair, respectively. They are members of a cult called Skylight who are trying to escape the clutches of cult leader Seth (Chris Messina). As they run away from the desert campus called The Aviary, they start seeing visions of a mysterious woman (who appears to be Sandrine Holt playing the role of Delilah). They're going in the wrong direction, hearing odd noises like cellphones despite the fact that Seth took theirs, and being pulled back into the dark places of their...

"Why do you keep talking like him?" Saban Films has revealed the first official trailer for an indie thriller titled The Aviary, marking the feature directorial debut of filmmakers Chris Cullari & Jennifer Raite. This has come out of nowhere, without playing at any film festivals or anywhere else before its opening in April this spring. Two women flee into the New Mexican desert to escape the clutches of an insidious cult called "Skylight". Consumed by fear and paranoia, they can't shake the feeling that they are being followed by its leader, a man as seductive as he is controlling. With their supplies dwindling and their senses starting to fail them, they are faced with a horrifying question: how do you run from an enemy who lives inside your head? Starring Malin Akerman, Lorenza Izzo, Chris Messina, and Sandrine Holt. This actually looks like a twisted, mess-with-your-mind film about how much cults can really,...
